What an AMAZING sci-fi/mystery/thriller! I am a die-hard fan of this novel, and I hope it's not the only one to come. I absolutely loved how Penborn was able to tie everything together, including a couple of details that I'd forgotten about or that didn't seem they were going to get resolved (no spoilers). I loved that I wasn't able to predict the murderer or anything that happened in the novel. I thought it was going to be a very obvious plotline where the homunculus is the villain and it's running around the house murdering people. I also thought that maybe Jensen had somehow infused his spirit into the homunculus in a form of immortality. I'm glad that I was wrong on everything I was trying to put together because what Penborn had in store for this book was SO MUCH BETTER! Ugh, and the fact that every time I think I've got it figured out, Penborn spawned something totally shocking!

Buy this book. Y'all are gonna LOVE it.

I really enjoyed this locked room murder mystery! It was cleverly written and think you know who committed the crime but then something happens to turn it on its head.

The group were brought to Zandis Manor by Dr Jensen Zandis himself, his guests were hand picked to attend and it was unsure until they arrived what the intention was for their invitation. Unbeknownst to the guest, Jensen and his assistant Elli were to perform a séance and it was successful but it also caused a chain of events no one could imagine.

The guests are a real mix of people and it was really interesting to read about them, the first two characters you meet are Eliza and Dazon, they are brought together at the train platform and travel to the Manor together.

The Shadow element of this really interested me and I was curious to how Dazon and Jensen mastered amd used it to their advantage. Well worth a read and will look forward to the next one!

An intriguing plot and an engaging start to a new series! Magic, murder, detective work, what more could you ask for? Our main characters Dazon and Eliza are charming in their unexpected collaborative investigation, and this locked-mansion mystery yields plenty of twists to keep you guessing. It's a fun blend of fantasy and classic whodunit, which gives the story a satisfying balance of freshness and familiarity. I enjoyed the magic systems, e.g. shadejacktresy and jewel theory, which were imaginative and well thought-out. I'm looking forward to seeing more of Dazon and Eliza's partnership, diving deeper into the characters, and learning more about the surrounding world of Ravilo in future books.
