So what do I do on a quiet day - I catch up on some classic book reading. In this case more of my Paper Tiger collection. So to start with we have here the third book of the work from Chris Achilleos.
For me this sums up not only the books of Paper Tiger but also of the 80s with their bright and in many cases overwhelming set pieces of art. For example in this book you have film, book and game artwork - however for me the most emotive is the classic Judge Anderson piece - for me this WAS Judge Anderson, so much so that later when I actually read some of the storylines it felt like they have been written around the art.
But for me this takes me back to my early introduction to fantasy and science fiction - where the art was so descriptive. Let me explain, this was before the days of big budget CGI films (and only the handful of big budget films) so that really it was only art that could truly express an idea so utterly alien and magical. So when I found such work I would paw over them studying every detail so that I could hold tight to it in my imagination.
So for me when reading books of this time I could see these images and see them coming to life. So in the end the stories I read and the art I saw became inseparable.
Oh a side note I must also admit these book smell their age - if you have not picked up a late 70s or 80s book you wont know what I mean but for those who have its wonderful and brings back so many memories.
I see the tradition of these artists still lives on - however I wonder if the techniques discussed in this book do, they are seriously old school and for me show the dedication and skill that was required to make each single piece. I envy their creativity and marvel at their work - it is just as amazing now was it was in the late 80s when I first saw this book (and the others like it)
