Love Me Tender

Rate this book
Pay a visit to Caribou Crossing, the rustic, inviting Western town where broken hearts mend and new love takes root…

Dave Cousins, owner of the Wild Rose Inn, is known throughout Caribou Crossing as the nicest—and loneliest—guy in town. He's had his heart broken more than once, and he's determined not to let it happen again. So it's no wonder he's wary when a free-spirited drifter leaves him longing for more than just a steamy fling…

Like the wild goose tattooed on her shoulder, Cassidy Esperanza goes wherever the wind takes her. For her, a new day means a fresh start. And yet something about her days in Caribou Crossing—and nights with its handsome hotel owner—makes her think about staying a while. But when life takes an unexpected turn, her first instinct is to take flight once more. Is Dave strong enough to help them both face their fears, come to terms with the past, and believe that sometimes love truly can last a lifetime?

Sometimes you read a story that you can really identify with and this is one of those cases. While the storyline was pretty typical of the genre it spoke to me when (trying not to give spoilers) the topic of illness was introduced so I will start there. Having recently been diagnosed with a different albeit very similar illness as the one addressed in this story it really hit home for me. The symptoms are exactly the same and I could tell that Fox either knows someone dealing with this illness or has done some extensive research. I want to thank her for portraying it for what it is and giving it a realistic place within the story. You do not read about it often and it is something that people should be educated on, if even via the pages of fiction

I digress...back to the story

This is part of the Caribou Crossing series and I had not read the previous three instalments. Although it was not necessary I feel like I would have had a better understanding of the secondary characters.

The chemistry between Dave and Cassidy was evident from their first meeting. It was fun to watch how two very different personality types attract and learn how to adapt to each other. Although it does not really stray from the typical formula it was still a fun ride.

Lastly I was pleased to be introduced to another great Canadian writer whose stories take place in Canada even if the town is fictional. It makes the story feel a little more like home. I will be sure to check out the rest of the series to learn more about the characters of Caribou Crossing.

This is my first time reading Susan Fox books and this is book #4, but if all the others are of this quality, then she has another fan. The roles are reversed in this moving small town story, Dave is the settled and responsible hero while Cassidy is the nomadic rolling stone, never staying in one place too long. Love is something that Dave has loved and lost while Cassidy doesn't believe in it's possibilities, at least not for her. Their attraction is strong and real in this moving tale, but life has a way of testing people, this couple more than most. Can Dave and Cassidy find their happily ever after? Well, you will just have to buy the book to find out. If I were you, I'd hurry!

When a series is about a town where practically all the residents know everyone located in the area, numerous people make repeated appearances throughout the different stories. The Caribou Crossing series is now up to five books, and one individual featured in each story has had his share of bad luck when it comes to finding love. Once wed and divorced to someone who was more of a friend than marriage partner, Dave Cousins then had the love of his life sadly pass away before their vows were even said. Sworn to never love again, he does not even date. That is until a woman with a vibrant personality comes to Caribou Crossing and shakes up his life. Susan Fox has a knack for creating stories packed true-to-life circumstances and charming characters, and LOVE ME TENDER showcases her masterful talent.

The time Dave Cousins spends with his daughter when she is not with his ex-wife keeps him from being completely alone. He was supposed to marry a wonderful woman after his divorce, but an illness took her away much too soon. Besides being with his child, he does get considerable satisfaction from running the inn he owns in Caribou Crossing. One night a rather interesting woman arrives at the Wild Rose, whose plans are to move along to another town after staying in the area for a short period. Though Dave knows all the love he had to give a woman died right along with his fiancée, he reluctantly admits to himself that Cassidy Esperanza intrigues him but does not plan to act on the attraction.

Caribou Crossing sounded like a fun place to spend some time, and Cassidy thinks it could be a whole lot more exciting if the inn’s owner would like to become involved with her. Dave is not an easy man to seduce, as he is an expert at keeping his feelings closed off. Yet the always bubbly Cassidy brings some lightness to his usually solitary existence, and he realizes what he has been missing. Though neither wants anything permanent when it comes to relationships, they do start enjoying plenty of sexual benefits. Then a development makes Cassidy think it is time to move on, even if she will have to leave those who have brought much pleasure into her life.

Upon meeting Dave the first time, I knew he was a very exceptional man. And after becoming more familiar with him during subsequent books in the series, I really wanted this overly helpful guy to once again be happy. He always makes certain those around him are doing well, and offers to assist them if they need help at all. Yet he never asks for anything from others. Seeing him actually have a reason to smile made me grin, too, as his elation is so genuine. The reactions of Cassidy are also a joy to watch, as it is her nature to be extremely animated. Her nomadic lifestyle plus past history made it hard for her to think about ever being in love, but meeting Dave gradually makes her see what a permanent home should be like, thus raising questions. How they sexually respond to each other is believable, and true feelings are expressed with deeply caring gestures.

Susan Fox gives her Caribou Crossing characters many dramatic predicaments to overcome, where each moment is certainly conceivable because of its lifelike details. The dilemmas in LOVE ME TENDER are especially moving because of the large number of people often affected. How each individual reacted to the problems either they or someone they cared about are facing is often depicted with much intensity, as feelings are frequently near the surface. Since so many characters in the story have recurring roles, it would greatly make your reading fulfilment better to read the books in order, though short backgrounds do inform. LOVE ME TENDER explores emotional issues with satisfying results.

* I received a free copy of this audiobook in exchange for an honest review.

This is the fifth book in the "Caribou Crossing" romance series but despite that fact, this book also works as a stand-alone novel. In fact, this is the first book from that series that I have read and I enjoyed it immensely and I did not feel that I was missing part of the story.

Dave Cousins is thirty and divorced. He was born and raised in the small town of Caribou Crossing in Northern British Columbia. He had been married to his best friend from high school, but they weren't in love. When Dave met Anita he knew he had found his soulmate.

Dave and Jessie got an amicable divorce and agreed to share custody of their daughter, Robin. Then Dave and Anita got engaged and began planning their future together. Tragedy struck when Anita was diagnosed with a fatal illness and died soon after.

Three years have passed since then and Jessie has gotten remarried. This time to her soulmate, Evan who had left Caribou Crossing thirteen years earlier.

Dave is heart-broken and knows that he has lost the only woman he will ever really love. He focuses on his work. He owns the Wild Rose Inn and between the inn and his daughter, he feels that his life is as full as it will ever be and has resigned himself to that fact.

Cassidy Esperanza is 27 years old and lives the life of a gypsy. She travels from place to place and lives life to the fullest. She arrives in Caribou Crossing and meets Dave. She is attracted to him but is not interested in a serious relationship.

Dave isn't interested in any type of relationship, casual or otherwise. But Cassidy's bright personality and joie de vive makes her appealing to have as a friend.

Cassidy seems like a happy-go-lucky person without a care in the world, but her upbringing and childhood had been far from perfect. In fact, she is emotionally damaged.

Can two wounded souls find love? Can they help each other to heal? Or will they just cause more emotional damage and bring old wounds to the surface?

This book is, at it's core, a romance, but it is much more than that. It is a compelling drama as well.

Susan Fox has created a huge cast of characters that readers will fall in love with. Readers/listeners will wish they lived in the town of Caribou Crossing. Personally I would love to go visit the Wild Rose Inn since it sounds idyllic.

This book also deals with some serious topics such as divorce, cancer, death, multiple sclerosis, emotional trauma and more.

The narrator, Kate Udall, is very talented. I enjoyed her story-telling abilities.

I rate this audiobook as 5 out of 5 stars.

Fear. It's what kept Dave's heart closed for so long, and what kept Cassidy on the run. Amazing how one word, four letters, can do to a person.

Dave and Cassidy struggled with their individual fears for most of this story. Dave buried his heart with his fiancee three years ago. Cassidy refused to open hers because her parents were lousy examples of what it meant to love someone. Disillusioned but needing each other more than they needed air, this unlikely couple embarked on a casual relationship where emotions were not supposed to come into play.

But the heart has a way of knowing that the time to love again and to begin loving is right.

It was amusing to watch Cassidy work her magic on Dave, convince him with words and smiles to talk about his late-fiancee, to try to allow his broken heart to heal. In retrospect, she should have heeded her own advice. While I liked Cassidy's sunny disposition and carpe diem attitude about life, I kept hoping she'd hear what she was saying to Dave and put her own words into action. While she seemed to understand that parents are supposed to be examples for their children to follow, but she also seemed to forget that parents are not infallible. They will make mistakes, but the beautiful thing is that a child can learn from them and make conscience decisions to do differently.

The inclusion of multiple sclerosis was brilliant. Cassidy's reaction to her diagnosis wasn't a surprise. bit Dave's reaction was. I figured he would've let her go after she disappeared with a text saying goodbye. He didn't. His daughter's Facebook updates about Cassidy's whereabouts led to them reuniting and to her returning to Caribou Crossing for treatment with him as part of her support team. For the first time in a long time, Cassidy had what she'd been denied most of her life: support from others.

I really enjoyed this story. It's a nice, easy going read for a rainy day. It made me laugh, smile, frown, and think. It had me appreciating Dave and Cassidy's individual differences while hoping they made it to forever together. Characters from other books make appearances, adding to the richness of this small town romance between two people who needed to overcome their fears first before they could really, truly fall in love.

4.5*

LOVE ME TENDER is a sweet and serious love story between two characters who swore they'd never fall in love.

The second that Wild Rose Inn owner Dave Cousins sets eyes on gypsy traveler Cassidy Esperanza, he's struck by a zing of attraction that has him in disbelief. After a sting of heartbreaking relationships, Dave was certain he'd never feel his libido roar to life again, much less by a woman who won't be sticking around Caribou Crossing for long. Dave is known as a "nice guy" by everyone in town, but Cassidy sees more, a lonely man who needs companionship even if he never admits it. As Cassidy grows closer to Dave and his daughter Robin, she slowly brings him out of his self imposed shell of grief and depression, but when life throws Cassidy a curveball, her first instinct is to flee. Can Dave convince this wandering spirit to settle down in Caribou Crossing...with him?

LOVE ME TENDER is book 3 in the Caribou Crossing series by Ms. Fox. I really tried to like this story, but unfortunately I thought it was a terribly boring piece of fluff that wound up taking me weeks to finish. I couldn't get into the storyline, couldn't connect with the characters and found the dialogue and monologue to be unnatural and forced. Even during the surprisingly erotic sex scenes, the verbiage felt awkward between Dave and Cassidy.

Dave was the typical "nice guy" who didn't have much of a personality under his boy next door looks and sweet demeanor. Cassidy was a free-spirited drifter who skipped her way around the world looking for the next adventure. They didn't click at all and I didn't think they had even a little bit of chemistry. The bright spot was Dave's daughter Robin, and her relationship with Cassidy. Those two had a bond that I felt was tangible and made this book palpable for me. - See more at: http://www.theromancereviews.com/view...

Some people have all the luck, others it seems keep getting hit with the hard knocks and when Cassidy Esperanza passes out in the lobby of the Wild Rose Inn you have to wonder if this is yet another hard knock. Cassidy hasn’t had an easy life to say the least and has no concept what it’s like to love someone in the forever sense of the word, to be honest forever doesn’t even really have a meaning. No one stays forever, not without a bit of magic dust anyway.

Dave Cousins on the other hand is one of those forever kinds of guys. Yes he’s been divorced but he is still good friends with his ex and her new husband. He’s the kind of guy who will help out anyone in need. The problem with him though is he’s shut off his heart, from everyone other than his daughter. She is the one light of his life, but even still, does she get his whole heart?

When this wild child and this steady man meet will they be able to even see the same book let alone find the same page? When Cassidy gets another knock will she be able to see through it? Finally will Dave be able to open his whole heart to anyone, his daughter or even Cassidy? No one knows what the future will hold but in Caribou Crossing magic dust does seem to fall.

Another installment in the Caribou Crossing series takes the reader into the Wild Rose Inn and some intrigue into this small town. The book can be read as a stand-alone and though you might just get hooked into the twists and turns of this small town. This is a very well written novel with a little bit of heat though focusing more on the romance and the day to day problems of keeping secrets and learning to live through the pain of loss, all kinds of loss including trust. If you are into something a little more heady with some romance and happiness thrown in this is for you.

I enjoyed immensely Love Me Tender by Susan Fox. This story is another entrée into the small western town of the Caribou Crossing series. I have read several books by Susan Fox but not from this series. I know her to be a writer of solid and well-written romances. However, Love Me Tender surpasses the earlier work of hers that I have read. I do think it would have been helpful if I have read the earlier books in this series too. I have purchased the first three and they are on my TBR list.

Love Me Tender concerns Dave Cousins who owns the local Wild Rose Inn. He is as wary of love as he is lonely. Along comes live-for-the-moment kind of girl, Cassidy Esperanza, who turns his world upside down. They are characters with such different personalities but still so easy to fall in love with both of them.

What a lovely well thought out story of these two seemly opposites, who both unknowingly long for true love. While this follows the formula of traditional romance it is emotionally rich and engaging. This is another example of how you can’t go wrong with a Susan Fox story.

I have found a new series! While it is not necessary to read the previous books in the series, I think I would have enjoyed it even more if I was familiar with Dave as well as the supporting cast. That said, there is enough background provided so that you aren't wondering who everyone is.

I feel that Dave and Cassidy complimented each other perfectly. Cassidy made him feel alive again after suffering a devastating loss, and Dave shows Cassidy what love and home really is. Like the title suggests, this book is full of tender and romantic moments, as well as some sexy ones. I'm looking forward to reading the previous books as well as the next one!

This is the 4th book in the Carribou Crossing series. The characters were well developed and the writing smooth. I do think it would have made the story much more interesting if I had read the three previous books – there were secondary characters that I think we were being updated on their lives but it wasn’t clear to me. A nice town with a lot going on – stop by – you’ll enjoy your visit! Enjoy! NetGalley and Kensington Books – Zebra provided an advanced review copy of this book in exchange for an honest review!

The author told a good story and the characters were really interesting. My issue was that I didn't like the story she was telling. The heroine had an illness, the hero was trying to help her learn to deal with it, and the hero was trying to be a good father to his daughter at the same time.

It just dealt with some heavy topics. "I'm worried I'll die in a nursing home like my great grandmother." Wow. Not what I want to read in a romance novel.

I could see myself reading other books by this author since she writes well. Hopefully her other books don't depress me.

This story was OK. Dave and Cassidy both had issues, but ultimately it brought them together. There was a lot of people introduced in this book which had me seriously confused most of the time. It would give a name and who they were, then mention them a couple chapters later and I was like who the hell is that? And the story seemed to move really slow. I started skimming at times, and struggled to finish the book in the end.

This was my first book by this author and I feel like i started off on the wrong foot. I rarely if ever read books in series out of order. It drives me insane to feel like I am missing information from the previous books in the series. I think this fact heavily impacted my overall reaction or lack of reaction to this book.

This is a really good book about learning to except the loss of someone you love and about learning to open your heart to love. It is also about not letting what happened to someone in the past rule how you live your life.
