A memory-stealing cult. The ever-watchful City of Eyes. Making small talk. Join Droplet as she faces all these horrors and more…
Vigilante shapeshifter Droplet has trained her entire life to take down those with more power than scruples, but she still makes mistakes. When a rescue mission goes wrong, a memory-stealing cult of blood mages escapes with kidnapped captives in tow. To save them, Droplet reluctantly teams up with the outgoing, tenacious Azera. Droplet knows better than to trust a human—she made that mistake once, and that person's betrayal scattered her community across the known world—and she can tell Azera is hiding secrets behind her sunny smile. But if they can’t learn to work together, even Droplet’s own memories could be lost.
This was PURE JOY and I hope we get many more books of Droplet and her adventures!
~superficially simple worldbuilding that is actually excellent and interesting ~lost count of how many times I laughed out loud ~possibly my favourite depiction of shapeshifters EVER ~surprisingly awesome nuns ~this author made me fall in love with a character named Cheesebreath, I think that deserves its own award
What a wonderful debut novel from Adrian Harley!!! Many Drops Make a Stream is a delightfully rich fantasy story, with lore and backstory that makes you hope for more stories soon and with unique, animal perspectives that make you wish you could be a shapeshifter too. The novel is witty and balances light-hearted moments with the weight of what’s at stake. Everyone should read this book!
An enjoyable quick read! The shapeshifting main character was fun to read about, I loved all the details on shapeshifting and how that affected the way she saw the world. The worldbuilding was also fun and rich, though since the story is so short I felt like I didn't have time to marinate and really get to know the world well.
Ultimately because it was so quick, I found it hard to get too invested. There were also many kind and supporting characters in the cast... which is lovely, but I found it made me feel like there wasn't enough tension. There were definitely some tense scenes, great action, but I also found the ending wrapped up so neatly that I was surprised by the simplicity. I've been reading a lot of long and heavy books recently so that may have skewed my expectations, but this kind of ending might be perfect for people who want to see characters succeed and for endings to wrap things up neatly.
I would recommend this to someone looking for a action-y, fun and occasionally humorous read that keeps the plot moving and has some pleasant characters with a supportive cast around them. Also triple-recommendation for people who like shapeshifters, specifically especially animal shapeshifting stuff (there's a whole rat chapter! :D). The bits about opposable thumbs and what a struggle doors are in so many forms without them made me laugh. Also a good read for some intriguing worldbuilding thoughts and magic.
What I love most about fantasy is how it lets me think about what being a person and living in a society means to me. This book creates a vivid, unique world where these questions arise very naturally as the backdrop to an exciting plot, delightful writing, and bonus animal friends! I particularly liked the communication systems and resulting hilarity.
Overall a fun read. The world feels well thought out and unique, but unfortunately I didn't feel like there was enough elaboration of certain elements. I wished more time was spent flushing out the world and characters, I can tell that a lot of love was put into this story.
The description of shape shifting and shape shifter culture was fascinating, and the best part of the book.
Some jokes made me crack a smile while reading while some felt out of place where the situation called for more seriousness.
A fast paced story that could have benefitted from slowing down and taking it's time here and there.
This book is a real page turner! I couldn't put it down. I love the balance between action, mystery, and humor. I cannot wait for more from this author and this universe!
A refreshing dive into a diverse fantasy world with fascinating cultures and utterly enjoyable characters. I haven't felt up for longer fantasy reads as of late, and this was perfect to sate my fantasy itch.
