Annabel Chase is the author of urban fantasy and cozy mystery novels. She would love to live in a magical town where she can shop at Ready-to-Were for the the perfect outfit, flirt with hot angels and vampires, and cook gourmet meals without exerting any effort. Visit her on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/Annabel-Chas... or on her website at www.annabelchase.com.
This book is a series of detectives taking place at a magical academy, though I found that the magic is relatively slight. It might be interesting for some, but not for me. Has potential, but it's a very tiresome to read. Our MC seems be quite curious about everything and sticks her nose in all kinds of things. This often results in negative situations for her. I made it to book three but got too annoyed with the way the character seems to act. Furthermore, I don't feel a lot of character depth or a lot of progression.
exceptionally outstanding paranormal urban fantasy adventure series
This is an outstanding and exceptionally entertaining paranormal urban fantasy adventure series. An extraordinary cast of characters and storyline. Basically this is a college version of a Harry Potter style story. There are four sets of books in this entire series. Each set of books focuses on one particular student of the four. These four students are roommates at spell slingers Academy. This is a college for supernaturals. We have a wise and powerful head mistress as well as many other incredibly amazing teachers. Each set of books as I said focuses on one particular student but all four students are involved for the most part in their adventures. It’s a magical world that mixes with the human world as well as the authors other paranormal cozy mystery and urban fantasy series. No spoilers other than to say it is an absolutely amazing and entertaining story. Other than Harry Potter it is my second favorite magical school story. There were a lot of books in this series and yet I was still Sad when the series finally wrapped up. The adventure is waiting and you will not be disappointed once you begin reading this story. Check it out it is absolutely amazing.
I liked that this spanned their four years of "college" and that each girl was the main heroine showing growth during her story. You don't lose sight of any of the girls as they play a part in all of the stories. We start with Bryn. I loved everything about her. I completely understood where she was coming from and glad those around her eventually got there. She had to come to terms with who she was and learn about the magical side of things while solving murders and kidnapped friends. Then there was Dani, who admittedly frustrated me the most. Each girl has to overcome something while finding the love of her life. Each faces challenges that can destroy friend, family, or humanity. Next came Cerys then Mia. One carrying grief and guilt and the other lacking self confidence as compared to her friends.
Their challenges were different and crucial. It was interesting to read about each yet not lose sight of any of the ladies as we progressed through the series. Their circle grew stronger too. I would recommend the series to anyone who likes paranormal books, some snark, and some romance.
(FYI I tend to only review one book per series, unless I want to change my scoring by 0.50 or more of a star. -- I tend not to read reviews until after I read a book, so I go in with an open mind.)
Read back to back years ago.
First time read the author's work?: No
Will you be reading more?: Yes
Would you recommend?: Yes
------------ How I rate Stars: 5* = I loved (must read all I can find by the author) 4* = I really enjoyed (got to read all the series and try other books by the author). 3* = I enjoyed (I will continue to read the series) or 3* = Good book just not my thing (I realised I don't like the genre or picked up a kids book to review in error.)
All of the above scores means I would recommend them! - 2* = it was okay (I might give the next book in the series a try, to see if that was better IMHO.) 1* = Disliked
Note: adding these basic 'reviews' after finding out that some people see the stars differently than I do - hoping this clarifies how I feel about the book. :-)
I loved the fact that the ten books were broken up to feature all four of the main characters. Each one shined in their own special way. I was hoping to learn more about witchcraft. What I learned about friendships not one ups-manship. This this book had a lot of meaning for me. It even creeped into my dreams. While I liked all the characters, Mia Holmes touched me the most. I watched her come out of her protective shell. I was very much like her when I was growing up and for a good part of my adult life. The story line was great, too. It was full of action, advertise and some beautiful descriptions. I didn't mind the romance part of it. I highly recommend getting the whole set of ten books. They read as one book and if you're like me you won't put it down until the end.
The series were pretty well written with nice action, however I could not understand one thing. Why do they call themselves "paranormals" as from their point of view they are the normals, and the rest are just... "humans", no? Other than that it flowed nicely, with a hiccup per book in average when the main character has to do, for some reason, something stupid that lands her in a difficult situation. Why they do not use their intuition at all? You would expect that being witches they should have their intuition trained to help them in their everyday life, however either they do not have at all, or they choose not to use it... There were some moments when I wanted to drop the lecture, however I persevered till the end.
Just can’t stop with one! And, here you don’t have to.
Bryn Morrow, Dani Degraff, Cerys Davies and Mia Holmes have two things in common: they are powerful elemental witches with familiars, and at Spellslinger Academy, they are designated roommates. None of them have had friends and all have disappointments in their backgrounds.
These aren’t really YA, although there is some resonance with that genre. This isn’t a high school; more a supernatural university, and they find and form adult relationships, when their time in the spotlight happens. So less “coming of age” and more fulfilling their potential.
I loved watching these young adult women come into their own. With boyfriends as a side dish instead of the main course the girls get the opportunity to learn with all the stumbles that truly earned knowledge brings and support from their friends, mentors and eventually loving boyfriends. I love the length and interconnectedness of this series. Nice to be able to stay in the same universe for a decent long while. Maybe one day Ms Chase will grace us with the continued adventures of the Quad Squad. A girl can hope🤷🏻♀️
The complete series is the way to go for the Spellslingers Academy, you might be ok reading the Warden of the West series alone and will be Ok but after that, this books need to be read in order to get all the awesome stories and see what make the friends strong over the year. Nice to see their weaknesses become strengths and the mental adjustments, they all went through in their respective journeys. Superb Job by Ms. Chase
Great characters, interesting backstories, action packed plotlines what's not to love? These books may have been written for younger readers but they make nice easy reading for those of us in our senior years who are still only 18 in our minds. I love girls with attitude but, like me, suffer with anxiety. Unlike me, they overcome theirs. It's great that they all find the paranormal of their dreams. Long live fantasy.
Maybe 20% into book one before DNF-ing. Struggled to get into any flow with the story as it jumped around in an order that didn't feel natural/easy to sink into. Also seemed a little too like other series or reliant on knowledge not given to the reader e.g. "Do I get a broomstick?" when there'd been no mention of them exosting in this world, Fred and George being chatty/sassy/playful characters. A shame as I was looking forward to getting into a series.
Although I enjoyed her writing and her characters, I think the entire story line could have been told in fewer books. Lots of unnecessary fluff. I also think that each of the 4 witches hooking up with men way more experienced than them, and most probably a lot older, was a little uncomfortable. That each girl found a man to partner with, makes them seem less able themselves.
Loved the concept but execution did not hit the mark. I’m “old” for the genre and reduce my rational human expectations for the characters based on this. My view with this adjustment is still immature characters. Flaky plot. Comparison reviews to Harry Potter were undated or fake.
I was captured on page one and I was not disappointed . This series has all that you want. Each book was well written from front to back. I will read it all again. I kind of wish I had the physical book because it would definitely be a keeper on my shelf. READ 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
My concern of reading such a long series, is that it would get stale. I didn’t need to worry about this series. The strong story is good and evil, the friends grow in power and use of their abilities. Fantastic story never loses your attention. I would suggest not reiterating so much. I enjoyed these books!!!
Great books by a great author! I loved reading them from the different points of view. Amazing! It seems to me that fleshed out the characters more than it does by each book only being told by one point of view because they only have one hero while these have four. Great concept. I can’t wait to read more from this author!
I read a wide variety of books, some YA. These characters are one dementional and each story basically follows the same plot line. A child of 10 might enjoy them.
Don't get comfy, always on the move, exciting and fun to read Never stayed up all night to read, but it was a first, glued to my eyes😁😁😁😁😁😁😁 Enjoy if you dare!!!!!
While this group of 10 stories is YA in some ways, it is definitely a fun read. It follows the coming of age of 4 powerful witches. There is lots of action comradery for the 4 of them, with each having their own strengths and weaknesses to master and overcome.
Love how she developed the characters throughout the series and how I read them AFTER the other series which I think is about one of their daughters! Keeps you guessing as well.
Read the first 6 chapters, then started skimming. Just couldn’t hold my attention. The change in character voices became confusing. I loved Spellbound. Win some, lose some.
This series was amazing. From start to finish there was non stop action and drama. The 4 main characters and their stories kept you on the edge of your seat and their male counterparts were so very diverse. This was an amazing read and I highly recommend it.
Fun, fun, fun! Four witch girls become four elemental witchy women, each with their own powers through their growth at Spells lingers Academy. Read their challenges and triumphs here.
Magic, mystery, mayhem, mixed with a diversity of interesting characters, romance, unique situations and lots of action and humor spread through out make for an armchair adventure I enjoyed from start to finish.
The series was excellant at letting each of the four students shine in their own stories as well as helping each other throughout. The whole series is a fun mix of mystery, adventure, and romance.
This group of books are a pleasant and rewarding series. Ms. Chase has the ability to hold a readers attention.. She spins her way through unusual and memorable sinerios.
I loved the way this series gives you four different main characters with stories and adventures of their own. I recommend this to anyone that loves action. This is a keeper to be enjoyed again and again!
I thoroughly enjoyed reading these novels probably more suited to a younger age group than myself . But liked how the author took you through the lives of the four main characters their fears and challenges
