it was broken down by every type of thing to grow and that made it rather haphazard to read thru for me. jan-dec annuals. another jan-dec bulbs. another jan-dec fruits. then herbs and veggies, then houseplants, then lawns, then perennials, then roses, then shrubs, then trees, then vines. i think it'd have been easier to read if i could just look up by month alone, instead of having eleven different sections to have to look thru to see what to do in november. especially since so much of the information for the same months repeats itself! i got frustrated and bored after paging thru the same information in 4 different sections. and i gave up on the book. it seemed overly simplistic and as i said, extremely heavily repetitive.

My go to book for gardening. I've read this book ,many times and will every year.
I don't use herbicides or pesticides in my garden and this book is full of timely information.

This is possibly the most well-worn book in my library. I bought it the same year I bought my first house in 2006 (poor timing, goodbye house value, nice knowing ya) and read the whole thing cover to cover. I was raised in a family of very avid gardeners and already knew quite a bit, but I was new to Minnesota. The month by month guide was invaluable for me, and no other book gave me the details I needed on specific plants and tools for the climate. It's easy to reference and contains excellent information!

I'm still in the same house, I still flip through this book every year, and my once-bare yard is flourishing with blueberries, roses, raspberries, lilacs, tulips, hostas, and bleeding hearts. I have several large flower beds and a vegetable garden that feeds us all summer. I've read several other zone-specific gardening books, but this one is by far the best.

I thought that this was just the book I was looking for. It wasn't. Didn't like the organization (not truly "month-by-month") and the heavy reliance on chemical fertilizers and pesticides turns my stomach after all the reading I've been doing on organic gardening. I'll keep looking for that indispensable gardening tome. Suggestions welcome!
