All this druid wants is to visit Superhero World, snag some exotic tech, and go home. Unfortunately, fate has other plans. What’s a mythological hero to do when he’s forced to become a supervillain to save his world… and himself?Colin is a druid on a mission. Namely, traveling to an alternate dimension where technology rules, to snag the tech he needs to save his friends in the Hellpocalypse timeline.

At first, it sounds simple. He’ll slip through the timestreams, do a little sightseeing, and go home. Heck, it might even be fun to visit a world where actual superheroes exist.

But for creation’s unluckiest druid, nothing is ever easy. When things go horribly wrong, Colin finds that his magic is almost completely on the fritz.

To complicate matters, he’s soon mistaken for a supervillain, making enemies with the planet’s most powerful superhero in the process.

Stranded in a world where heroes aren’t quite heroic, and where villains have no rights, the druid sees only one path forward…

He’ll figure out his powers and clear his name, all while being hunted by every superhero and government agent on the planet.

At least there’s an upside—things couldn’t possibly get worse, right?

Superhero World is the first novel in a planned superhero fantasy fiction trilogy by paranormal and urban fantasy author M.D. Massey.

Written in the tradition of gritty, realistic comic book fiction, this series follows in the irreverent footsteps of works such as The Boys, Wild Cards, Watchmen, Invincible, and a long list of other trailblazing sci-fi and fantasy worlds too extensive to reference here.

M.D. Massey describes himself as the prototypical INTJ. His eclectic background provides him with a rich tapestry of experiences to draw on when crafting fiction, as evidenced by the believable worlds and relatable characters he creates.

As a former Army combat medic (91B), professional martial arts instructor (Krav Maga, JKD, FMA), and women's self-defense instructor, he possesses a unique understanding of close combat, firearms, and criminal violence that few authors can match. This knowledge provides an element of realism to the Druidverse™ novels, setting them apart from other fantasy series.

Mr. Massey lives in the Texas Hill Country with his family and a huge American bulldog that keeps him company while he writes. When he's not in his office or at the local coffee shop writing, you can find him in his garage pummeling inanimate objects or knife-fighting with his friends.

Superhero World is a wild, interesting ride that throws Colin into a universe that looks like a superhero comic, but acts nothing like one. Without magic and surrounded by high-tech chaos, he quickly finds that nothing is as heroic as it seems.

The book takes classic superhero tropes and tilts them just enough to make you uncomfortable. That shining hero persona? Questionable. Government-backed “good guys”? Shady. Villains? Even worse. Massey does a great job showing how our favorite comic book ideals can look a lot less noble when dropped into a more realistic, gritty setting.

Colin's usual tools are either useless or unstable, and the safety net of Oak Grove is nowhere in sight. He’s surrounded by liars, agendas, and a tangle of half-truths, and it makes his journey feel tense and unpredictable. It’s no wonder he spends most of the book annoyed, confused, and constantly adapting.

There’s a lot going on in this world... some of it doesn’t add up, and that’s the point. You get intriguing backstory, several layered subplots, and a big question mark over who you can trust. The quirky resistance group adds flavor, but even they come with secrets. Nobody is clean. Nobody is simple.

It’s not your average Druidverse adventure, but that’s part of its charm. It's bold, a little chaotic, and a smart take on what happens when the lines between hero and villain blur. Definitely worth a read for longtime fans who are open to something a bit different.

It's different, but good!

As Mr. Massey said, "This one is different, odd, and not for everyone. To that, I see his point as this could be triggering for some. That said, it's a really good novel and does make you feel like you're slung into an extremely skewed superhero universe.
Colin decides to check out said universe due to its lack of magic, but futuristic tech, to help him on his quest. He very shortly realizes that all is not what it seems and the "good" guys aren't that good. Of course, neither is a government agency and the bad guys, well, they're worse than normal. The good guys who are somewhat good are a quirky bunch, and their leader is definitely odd, with a hidden agenda.
Navigating through magic being wonky, no Oak Grove, and everyone being somewhat suspect, Colin has a hard time. Almost getting killed by something you've never experienced changes a man.
There are several subplots going on, and you find out about this world's history, but stuff doesn't add up. This makes Colin a very unhappy druid. He has to navigate several situations and personalities that would make a normal person scream. To top it all off, no one is as they seem.
All in all, this is a fun romp, but it does make you think, and it exposes some overused tropes that seem a little suspect in today's world. It's not for everyone. However, I do think it's handled well and fits the Druidverse world nicely.
I would recommend it, just read the warnings and decide for yourself.

When you have to put your book down and go to do real world things, but
all you can think about what you just read, what may happen next, just
getting back to that book, then you know you have a good book in front of you.
This is that book.

Another Colin adventure, a new timeline.

We are all used to superhero stories, clear cut good guys and bad guys -
you know the deal. Well, forget all that you think you know - a world
full of superheroes, and not a decent human being among them. This is
the world that Colin has to navigate in this story.

There is also a good dose of modern world realism, one that highlights
how, as a society, we may be becoming somewhat immune to some of the
evils and evil people in our newsfeeds, in public office, in our streets.

As we always expect, full of action, twisty plot and a story that
grips you hard and won't let go until the last page.

Undertoad, just beneath the surface

4.5 stars.

A solid start to the newest “chapter” in the Colin McCool saga. Unlike some of the other books, this one’s center is darker, more sinister, and well, just plain gross.

“Undertoad” was a term from John Updike’s novel the World According to Garp. Where one of the characters misheard/misunderstood an undertow - thinking it a giant underwater creature that would drag you under and make you disappear - rather than a dangerous natural phenomenon. I thought of it as was reading this novel. It is the monster that lives in the foundational trench of this book.

The story still has some light-hearted moments, that the saga is know for, and Colin’s usual snark. But, that Undertoad man… it’s never very far away from the surface.

Is there really anything Colin can't do? Druid, time traveler, God killer, vampire bestie, junkyard mechanic, Zombie slayer, and now Superhero!

New series by MD Massey--our classic Colin is super fun. This new side of Colin, bit older, wiser, and working alone, (alone in a parallel dimension), well, trying to work alone until he gets in over his head and ends up making friends and allies. It's really interesting to see how Colin works away from his Earth, his Oak, and his gang of reliables. Great story, really enjoyed this book and looking forward to the next!

Colin heads down the time stream to grab some tech

In his mind Colin's out to save his family in the alternate time stream but as usual things take a left turn to FUBAR. Entertaining and action packed story. I especially like TurboGerbil and the cockroach characters. As the saying goes 'no good deed goes unpunished.' The Druid and his moral compass get a real workout in this story.

Wow!

Colin lands on another Earth, within minutes he's fighting with a sup, annnnnnd accidentally killing him. 😯😯😯

Mr Massey, at the front of the book, said this will be darker than anything he's written before.

He's right on that!!!!!!

Who can Collin trust in this new world of Super Hero's and Super Villians????

Only time will tell........if he manages to stay alive that long.

Brilliant.

For the audiobook.

Could tell the author was from Austin with his male feminist prelude about RAPE and BEING MEAN TO WOMEN trigger warnings, really set the book up for failure.

Anyway, narrator was good and story was actually decent the first few hours but it just fell apart into complete boredom. I couldn't tell you what the last 2 hours were about if my life depended on it. Again, decent premise and world building, some decent superheroes, but just not worth it.

Like the Boys but different!

MD Massey, hits it out of the Park. A new timeline, filled with superheroes and supervillains. An homage to comic books and movies. The heroes and villains equals moral ambiguity, and all are flawed. Book one a super start and our one true hero is Druid Colin McCool and I can't wait to read book two.

Different but good

Not sure how i really feel about this yet. The story was great, but is had preferred Massey had just wrote the superhero story he wanted to tell without out plucky druid. The characters are interesting and the machinations was intricate was ever, so I'll read the next one, but current characters besides Collin would have been fun too.

Sigh...

It's been a fine run. 28 books and not a dud in the bunch...until now. Weak plotting, story line, and dialogue. I had to flip ahead throughout the book, suffering vapidity all the way to get to BOOK 2? I am a real fan, but I won't suffer through another entire book of this crap. See you again AFTER this next book.

Serviceable superhero deconstruction featuring a little magic, a little skiffy and some nasty superheroes (Frederic Wertham's wet dream, fer shure...) as well as a few genuinely semi-decent ones.

You don't have to read the dozens of other Colin McCool stories to pick up what's going down here, but I don't think I'll be checking out his other adventures (or the sequel to this one, either).

Colin's latest foray takes him to a world that Click refers to as Superhero world. It's kind of twisted as on The Boys and I haven't seen any "heroes" who aren't out for there own agenda. A good bit more laughs than has been typical

the Druidverse has gone SUPER!

Just when I thought there was nothing much left for Colin… BAM, POW, WHAM! Superhero World starts the beginnings of another fabulous cycle in the Druidverse. Massey NEVER fails to deliver the goods! A+ storytelling from a master of the craft.

Invade another world.
Kills a hero.
Makes excuses and refuses to be held accountable
Becomes judge jury and executioner.

Sry I can't root for the main character, he's unlikeable and feels like trying to hard to be meta.

Started this because it looked fun. I realized I had read the first book in the series years ago and hated it. The main character is written with all style and no substance. He is here to save his kids on a dying world but refuses to actually act in any real capacity.

This is the first book I've read by this author, and despite the incredibly cringe title and MC name, I did enjoy it for the most part. This sits between a 3 and 4 star for me.

For a supposedly smart character Colin makes a lot of dumb and impulsive decisions.

This is one of the best series I’ve ever read!! I love how the author branches off the Druid-verse!! This was a really fun super hero adventure but still very much a Collin McCool book.

What a pleasant and intriguing surprise.

A foray into a new world with entirely new characters and subplots to analyze. But still get Colin…..great job, Mr.Massey.

Taking a character from an urban fantasy series and dropping him into a superhero novel shouldn’t work, but it does, mostly through Massey’s fast-paced and effective prose.

did not read any of the other books in this series
started with this one just because.
surprised that I enjoyed it as much as I did and not having a lot of background story on the main character.
