When it was suggested I go through this book, I didn't know what to exspect.
I knew it was going to be hard and challenging at times.
Man I was wrong!! Hard and challenging do not even begin to scratch the surface of this.
This book points directly to the Bible, Some days it feels like God is taking a sledgehammer to my life, but God is right there placing me back together His way.
It is a demolition, finding and pulling up things I had completely forgotten about.
The focus is always on God and what he wants for is.
This is an excellent manual for ministry. If you are familiar with nouthetic counseling resources, such as those from Jay Adams (who endorsed this book), then this manual will serve you along those lines.
It opens with the biblical foundations for change, eight lessons giving the reader hope that genuine change can come through God's Word. The next section consists of thirteen lessons applying Scripture to specific areas, covering problems of self, anger, bitterness, relationships, depression, fear, and life-dominating sins. The book also includes a conclusion to the course, including an exam and information on biblical counseling training.
The supplements and practical helps section was indeed helpful. I've made several printouts just from this section and have used them in my teaching, such as how to change our thinking. If you are going to do any counseling as a pastor or lay elder (and you are), this section includes counseling records and planning, assisting you in conducting these sessions.
It reminds me of A Homework Manual for Biblical Living by Wayne Mack, only a bit beefier. Strongly recommended for pastoral ministry, and it's useful for individual discipleship.
Originally I gave this title 4 stars. I am revising my stars to zero.
The reason I am doing so is that since reading this title, several things about my faith journey and expression have changed and I no longer subscribe to evangelical ideologies.
