The photos in this book were taken to try to save the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge and this is an environmental advocacy exhibit/book. The essays are beautifully written and contribute much to the book’s power. But it’s the photos that make the book amazing; the photographer is extraordinarily gifted. These photographs are spectacular; a few are disturbing, but most are incredibly beautiful They’re a true gift to the environmental movement and to the art world as well. I saw this exhibit (photos with much descriptive text) at my local science museum (the California Academy of Sciences in San Francisco) and I was so impressed and moved that I bought the book immediately. It’s difficult for me to rate the book on its own because as I read it and viewed the photos, I had the pleasure of remembering the actual exhibit. Given the circumstances regarding the opposing sides, reading this was both inspiring and infuriating.
