A simple, fun instruction manual for living a more joy-filled, authentic life!
By one of the most admired spiritual teachers in the country, this book shows us how every moment, experience, and person can be an opening for our soul. Separated into three easy-to-use parts, this book
- Tell a fable that puts our spiritual journey into context - Discuss the seven spiritual principles that are universal to the world’s wisdom traditions - Show how nine specific challenges and difficulties (such as fear, illness, and change) can be transformed from stumbling blocks into stepping stones
Filled with advice that can come only from a lifetime of practicing these traditions, this book will be an indispensable guide to people who want more from their lives.
I read this book over a year ago, and wrote this review for a friend's website at the time. I am now bringing this same review to Goodreads. It may sound like it is written in the present...
Sometimes a book impacts you in a very significant way.
It is one that you have to take time with, savor the moments and read slowly, methodically, so you can take in the various learning lessons it provides.
This is THAT book.
I have been reading this one over the last several months so that I can not only read it, but digest it…feel it…live it and experience it.
This book is a simple, fun instruction manual for living a more joy-filled, authentic life.
I appreciated his rich analogies of his own journey and discussion about our spiritual and physical connection with life.
I could feel the energy and joy as I read each chapter.
He shows his readers how every moment, experience, and person can be an opening for our soul.
This book can be an indispensable guide to people who want more from their lives.
Dr. Roger Teel is one of the most admired spiritual teachers in the country. He retired from his position as Senior Minister for the Mile Hi Church in Lakewood, Colorado – from doing to being (something I can totally relate to on my own journey). He is now offering private consultations and seminars.
Loved the book- lots of heartfelt wisdom and spiritual takeaways.
I attended the Huntington Beach church when Dr. Teel was a minister in 1991. I literally accidentally stumbled upon his Sunday service. Previously, had never attended any church for a long period of time. That first service and it's teachings felt like home. I have thus been following the same spiritual path in Houston for almost 30 years. So grateful to both Dr. Teel and Rev. Patrick Pollard for the initial lessons that I received.
I know I will continue to re-read this book. Thank-you, Dr. Teel.
This Life is Joy will now be among my top books which I will reread many times. This book is filled with relevant stories that I could connect with and quite humorous in parts where I literally laughed out loud. However, the messages come across loud and clear of the connection we all have with one another. How each and every one of us can be a positive influence and make a difference in other people’s lives as well as our own. How we can take control and master spiritual laws and make them work strongly to bring that life of joy that we are all looking for. I wasn’t familiar with Dr. Roger Teel but was curious about this great title This Life is Joy. From the beautiful and loving forward of the late Dr. Wayne Dyer, as I progressed through this book I was completely captured by Dr. Roger Teel's powerful tapestry of words, woven with rich analogies of his own journey and our spiritual and physical connection with life. I could feel the energy and joy of Roger in every sentence as I read on. This Life is Joy is a must to read to get clear on our journey of where we want to take our lives. Dr. Roger Teel is a minister and apparently this is the only book he’s written. I do wish there were more. Regardless, it is packed with such loving wisdom, that I believe, we all could do with a good dose of at times in our lives. I could go on but I think now you know that this book, for me, was and will carry on to be Joyous reading!
My sister-in-law invited us to the Christmas Eve candlelight service at Mile Hi church. I went expecting a well done, more-or-less ecumenical service. I was blown away when the minister, Roger Teel, shared the metaphysical meaning of the Christmas story, including Christ within. I did a little research afterward and discovered that this church teaches the Science of Mind (which has nothing to do with either Christian Science or Scientology) from a perspective of mystical Christianity and Buddhism. I also learned he had written a book. I am loving this book. His approachable but life-changing stories and teachings about Spirit fill me with joy and empowerment. Highly recommended to anyone who is drawn to ecumenical spirituality.
Roger Teel has the gift of relating spiritual truths in easy to understand stories. In his first book, “This Life is Joy – Discovering the Spiritual Laws to Live More Powerfully, Lovingly, and Happily” Teel draws upon his over 40 years of ministry to relay his insights into living a fulfilled life.
I have heard Roger Teel speak many times in person at his home church – Mile Hi Church in Denver. Teel always was able to captivate his congregation with thought provoking sermons, and now he is sharing his wisdom to a wider audience as a first time author. Teel shares stories from his experiences of being a pastor. “Several years ago I had a conversation with a man who felt that his life was really stuck,” he relates in a chapter on risk taking. “I asked him, ‘when in your past have you felt the most alive?'” “The summer I overcame my fear of heights and learned rock climbing,” was the reply. “We used that experience as a launchpad for getting unstuck … I’ve noticed (when I ask that question) nearly everyone describes a scenario in which they pushed themselves out of their comfort zone,” Teel concludes. Reading these words made me contemplate the areas in my life where I feel stuck, and encouraged me to take more risks.
I liked how Teel is very open with his own struggles and triumphs in the book. From a story of a nervous prom date where he accidentally knocks his steak to the ground in a high class restaurant, to meeting the Dalai Lama, the author gives his readers life lessons. As a leading voice in the New Thought movement, Teel’s teaching is very relatable, not esoteric as sometimes the writings of New Thought pioneers like Ernest Holmes and Ralph Waldo Emerson can be.
With chapters on Relationships, Surrender, Judgment, Conflict, Disease, Uncertainty, and more there is a treasure trove of wisdom in the book. Teel didn’t hold back in the book’s 336 pages. It is one of the longer self help, spiritual type books I have read. I recommend reading This Life is Joy for tips on enhancing your own life.
I got this book from goodreads first reads. I fully support and agree with the intents but the writing/execution was too high minded/deep/philosophical for me. (It was a bit like grandmas china...conceptually you know they are plates for food but they are always away in the hutch.) I feel like others have said similar things but in ways that were more accessible to me. Part 3 was the best and I'm glad I stuck with it to get to that part.
Though I'd still recommend this to others, it was just OK for me. Most likely because I've read a lot of books like this lately, and because soo many friends said they loved it, I may have had too high of expectations. I'd summarize the book by saying that it teaches you principles about using your mind to overcome challenges, be present, be forgiving, be postive, be greatful and you will find that life can be soo much more joyous.
I got so much from reading this book, written by the former minister of the church I attend here in the Denver area. It was required reading for a class I just completed, but I consider it one of the best parts. It’s not the book I would have picked up by choice to read, yet it gave me so much these past 8 weeks. Great stories, wonderful wisdom, new insights, and a deeper understanding of how I can live my life with more joy and fulfillment every day.
The Practitioners at the Eureka Center for Spiritual Living read this and each of us reported on a chapter at our monthly meetings. Every chapter had a treasure trove of things to discuss. Rev. Dr. Teel writes so well, is a good storyteller, and gets his points across with ease. I loved this book.
I loved this book! It took me a long time to get through it as I would read a few pages at a time, absorb the message, and then try to put it into practice. I found it well worth the read and I am sure I will read it again.
My favorite was Chapter 13, "This Change is Birth". While the content was good and nourished my soul, it was not my favorite read because of the writing format and delivery style.
