Good enjoyable quick read. I like books set in the English Civil War. I learned a bit from this too about the life of ordinary everyday people in this era.

Hannah Pomfret is born of Puritan parents and has a strict upbringing, so when after a near accident she meets Matthew Wainright, a royalist her father is not best pleased.
For he sees that they are very in much in love and if they go ahead with a marriage it will divide the family who have opposing sides and views.
Can they ever make a match between them work and at what cost?
This was factually informative as to the time period and engaging as all the relevant information was bound up within the story so easy to digest.
A great story set amidst a turbulent backdrop of history.

FORBIDDEN SOLDIER BY ALLISON PRINCE
3.75/5 ⭐
genre- historical fiction
The story is based on Hannah Pomfret, a 14 year old girl who meets a boy called Matthew Wainwright and despite their differences in terms of family beliefs, gets enchanted by him as love defines no boundaries. When he joins the english civil war to fight for the royalists, she is very stressed. She wonders if he will ever come back, will they ever meet again. Will they ever have freedom in their love?
it is a sweet romantic book based on english civil war.
i would recommend you to read this if you're into books based on past.
I personally found this book kind of boring at first, but then started liking it after reading a few chapters.

A modestly-racy young adult (YA!)...historical novel with emphasis on the young rather than the adult! The mid-17th century political & religious conflicts are outlined clearly in the two main characters, the 15-year old Hannah Pomfret, a virginal though wildly-imaginative Puritan, and her more mature suitor/love interest Matthew Wainwright, a curly-mopped Royalist with real battle scars! As a failed history teacher who gave up on ever engaging students with the intricacies of Civil War politics & military operations etc., perhaps this kind of novel engages younger readers with the violent forces unleashed in Stuart England (& Scotland!) by Charles Stuart, traitor, & his notions of divine right!
A teenage love story with no pointless! sex seems unlikely to satiated modern audiences but Hannah cunningly negotiates herself a cross-faith marriage like a real player and gets her almost one-armed, but two of everything else?!, man & her chance to let a man 'run his hands and his lips over every inch of my skin when the clothes fall to the floor unnoticed'. Ahem! Amen to that, eh, Matthew? Oh...and Charles Stuart's execution is the climax of the story, well-told with some neat, geographical & social details, but a head short of a classic!

I thought this was a sweet romance. It lacked depth and its intended readership is at the young side of the young adult genre. But I liked it better than the other book I have read in the series.

Oh my god. This was such a surprise to me of how much I enjoyed this. I was quite sceptical going into this book, but I'm glad I kept going.
