Deceptions

Rate this book
In 1617 Jamestown Virginia a daring deception leads to dangerous passion in this riveting blend of romance, intrigue, and adventure.

Desperate to escape a marriage arranged by her aristocratic London guardians and to wed her childhood sweetheart, beautiful but innocent Catherine Parke secretly boards a ship bound for the New World. But the shock of what greets Catherine in Jamestown nearly destroys her. Catherine’s betrothed, now a successful trader, has an uncanny way with the Powhatan Indians. Although Catherine knows that adherence to strict moral codes rule the colonists’ lives, she soon discovers that beneath their proper facades not all is as it seems.

Although disappointments and disasters repeatedly test Catherine's strength and courage, a burning desire to uncover the truth drives her to unravel a confusing web of lies and deceit. With her own life in jeopardy, Catherine is drawn to the one man who can save her, but wonders if she can trust him, or will she be swept into an unknown and terrifying wilderness, once again loving the wrong man and paying dearly for it?

Vivid historical details bring the Jamestown settlement and Indian villages to life. Marilyn Clay’s suspenseful and compelling tale of one courageous woman determined to forge a new life for herself in a frightening and dangerous New World is an irresistible combination of suspense and romance. Deceptions is well researched, fast-paced and brimming with unexpected twists and turns.

3.5 rounded up to 4.
I did enjoy this book, however I agree with some of the other reviews that the main character frustrated me! I did love reading about the historical aspects and Native language weaved into this story. I wish there was more to read. I concur an epilogue would have been nice.

I really enjoyed this book for the historical aspect. I was disappointed in the ending because it didn't elaborate on what happened to some characters. Maybe an epilogue would have helped. I wanted to see Noah brought to some kind of justice!!!

I liked the book right off the bat. I liked the historical aspect and the story line because I don't really know what happened back in the 1600/1700s. It was easy to read and once it got going I couldn't wait to find out what happened next.

I didn't finish this one because the main character was driving me nuts. Maybe she was historically accurate or some such excuse, but I couldn't take another moment of her stupidity once she started making out with a married man. I will say that I enjoyed the historical setting in the early Jamestown settlement but it wasn't enough to keep me interested.

Author Marilyn Clay did an excellent job of creating realistic characters who were true to the period. Her research into how life might have been in the early Jamestown colony was gripping and realistic. I loved this story and am so glad it is now available for my Nook reader. I will definitely read more books by this author.

if you are a freshman in high school maybe you would like this book. I found it sappy and sugary, tepid and trite, with a plot line about an inch long, a ridiculous herione, and of no redeeming value whatsoever. am I being too subtle?

A quick read on what life might have been in colonial Jamestown. It's a bit over-the-top fictionalized situation. Still, it gives an idea of the hardship of that time period.

"Oh what a tangled web we weave......" A good historical fiction read. I fell in love with Phyrahawque even though he too took part in a deception.
