Wow. Another hit from Mr. Dymerski! I really enjoyed this one, and it was a quick read, too. Odd, creepy, and unsettling--these are the makings of a hit.
This is brilliant. Not just horror but gives the reader something to ponder about. I really like all of them, even took a second read on “The Heat” because the twist was unpredictable.
I basically gave a star for each short story I enjoyed out of the five in this book. I've read "Psychosis" and "The Asylum" by Matt as well. "Aberrations" is sitting in my Kindle library waiting for me to read it.
My favorite story out of all of these is definitely "The Heat". The twist at the end was perfect and exactly what I like to get out of thrillers/scary stories. Matt has a knack for keeping the suspense up until the very end. His writing style is why I keep coming back to his work. I'd say this isn't his best but it's still impressive and worth the read. His "Psychosis" book is by far my favorite out of what I've read from him so far. Those stories have stuck with me. Especially the one about the teens that explored the upper floors in the building they've lived in their whole live, and the story about the author who slowly started to lose contact with the outside world. If you haven't read any of his stuff yet, I'd suggest starting with "Psychosis" first. His books keep you entertained and allow you to escape for a little while. You will be creeped out too which is a bonus.
The short stories in this book that I enjoyed were... A Series of Strange Occurrences The Heat The Misdial.
Each left me feeling either utterly creeped out or shocked. 'The Misdial' pulled at my heartstrings at the very end. It also made me smile. Don't get me wrong it still makes your hair stand up on end. It was the perfect way to end not only the story, but the book as well.
These tales were honest to God creepy. I didn't actually expect that I'd get scared which is why I slept with the lights on because I had braved this collection at night. I especially loved how the author added an unconventional twist by associating horror with heat rather than cold which is what has been traditionally done. All in all this has been one of the most entertaining horror story collection that I've come across in quite some time.
