In this adorable new addition to the bestselling finger puppet series, watch Little Cat get spooked by a friend's silly disguise, then curl up at home with her Halloween treats. Featuring a plush finger puppet permanently attached to the book and peek-a-boo holes in every page, Little Cat gives parents and children a fun, interactive way to play and read together.
Ah, the finger puppet books. What a wonderful idea! They are a great shape, easy for my daughter to hold, and very sturdy (unlike another puppet-style book I could name--I'm looking at you, Curious George). The puppet also tucks neatly into the book so it can be easily shelved (ahem, George, are you listening?). The design and illustrations of this series are eye-catching and fun. But, alas! The stories are just terrible. Why? Why, finger-puppet books? You break my heart. (One possible answer: these originated in the Netherlands and are translated from Dutch, or at least the ones we own were.)
Little Cat is not the worst, but it isn't great. The story: Little Cat sleeps all day then goes out at night to meet a friend (another cat), who jumps out and scares her. In the next page he is wearing a pumpkin on his head, and scares her. Then she goes home, has a treat, and goes to bed. It's not really a story, and it mostly involves her "friend" jumping out at her. Meh.
The best stories in the series that I've found so far are Little Bee and Little Pig. They aren't great, but they're better.
This was the first finger puppet book I got for my toddler son and he absolutely LOVES it! He loves to handle the book and pluck at the puppet and is utterly ecstatic when you make the puppet "come alive" so he can grab at it. The story is incredibly simplistic and certainly doesn't appeal much to an adult, but as far as getting my son interested in books, I think this is a great start for his library.
Idk who's been checking out Halloween books all spring, but I've shelved a spate of them lately. More power to ya, Halloween people.
I'm sick and I was shelving my second children's cart of the night, so I stopped and finger-puppeted my way through this teeny book tonight. It was a cute story. I love cats and I love Halloween, so not a hard sell, haha.
