Schaduw van de Revenaunt #3
Ordelanden
De narigheden stapelen zich op voor de kersverse Koning Ghyll. Monsterlijke wolven en gigantische roofvogels terroriseren de afgelegen delen van zijn rijk en de plaatselijke machthebbers leggen de moeilijkheden op het bord van hun vorst. De Koning van de Nhael verdenkt Ghyll ervan Prins Torril gevangen te houden en sturen een delegatie die de prins wil zien. Maar juist nu is Torril spoorloos verdwenen.
En niet alleen in Rhidauna zijn er problemen. Qaunshun, een nabije stadstaat in de Juwelenwoestijn, stuurt Ghyll een noodkreet die hij niet kan terzijde leggen. Vanuit de Ordelanden wordt Rhidauna's hulp gevraagd bij de moord op een Landscommandeur, omdat anders een bloedige broederstrijd uitbreekt. En terwijl allerlei partijen om zijn aanwezigheid roepen, staat thuis Ghyll's jonge echtgenote Kerianna op het punt te bevallen, waarbij de Koning plechtig heeft beloofd aanwezig te zijn.
Gelukkig heeft Ghyll zijn vrienden, die hem in alles terzijde staan. Volg hen op hun vele avonturen in dit derde deel van de "Schaduw van de Revenaunt" trilogie.

Een leuk "feelgood" boekje (231 blz) om te lezen, maar dit verhaal voelt niet compleet.
Verhaallijnen (De queeste van Bo en wat speelt zich af in Vavaun) die gelijktijdig lopen worden (bewust?) overgeslagen, waardoor er personages bijkomen waarvan je de achtergrond niet kent. Dit had met een aantal hoofdstukken erbij volgens mij een completer beeld kunnen geven.
Verder is dit duidelijk niet het einde van het complete verhaal, want daar is het einde veel te open voor.
Ondanks bovenstaande weet dit verhaal je toch weer te boeien, ook al weet je dat het allemaal goed komt. Het is en blijft tenslotte recht toe recht aan Fantasy. ;)
Eigenlijk 2,5 ster waard, maar vanwege de mooie omslag naar boven afgerond naar 3 sterren.

Nadat Ghyll en zijn reisgenoten de aanval van Vasthul en diens leger ondoden tegen alle verwachtingen in hebben weten te overleven zijn ze voor goed verlost van Vasthul. Ghyll kan zich hierdoor concentreren op het koningschap en de zwangerschap van zijn kersverse bruid Kerianna. De rust is echter van korte duur. Op het moment dat zijn schildknaap Torril vermist wordt heeft diens vader, de koning van de Nhael, een delegatie naar Rhidauna gestuurd, omdat ze Ghyll ervan verdenken prins Torril tegen zijn wil vast te houden.
Ondertussen roert er het een en ander in de nabijgelegen Ordelanden en wordt er steeds door een ander land of staat uit de Ordelanden een beroep gedaan op Ghylls hulp. Als koning van Rhidauna kan hij deze verzoeken niet terzijde leggen en besluit hij te doen wat hij kan. Al snel blijkt het dat de Dar’khamorth achter veel van de problemen zitten.
Terugval
Waar Paul E. Horsman met Zihaen een aantal verbeterpunten liet zien ten opzichte van het eerste deel Rhidauna, doet hij deze verbeterpunten in Ordelanden helaas grotendeels teniet. Zo zit er in dit verhaal weer een (te) vast stramien. Steeds gaat Ghyll met een aantal van zijn onderdanen op een missie om zaken op orde te stellen, waarna hij weer terugkeert naar zijn kasteel om bij zijn zwangere vrouw te zijn om vervolgens weer op een missie te gaan. Dit herhaalt zich enkele keren, waardoor het verhaal voorspelbaar wordt.
Gedurende het verhaal raakt er weleens een personage gewond tijdens een missie, maar in principe lukt het Ghyll of zijn onderdanen steeds weer om overal alle problemen op te lossen. Omdat de hoofdpersonen zelf niet langer het doelwit zijn, maar zichzelf in de problemen storten door anderen te helpen, ontbreekt het gevoel van dreiging. Dit wordt versterkt doordat de vijanden bijzonder incapabel zijn.

I received a copy of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review.
I had read the first book of this series and loved it. And although I didn’t read the second one, I quickly got caught up reading this one. What I enjoy most about the author’s writing is his ability to completely take me away to a different place and time. The magic, the medieval-like culture, the creative characters brought me out of my life every evening as I wound down from my day to see what they were up to.
The settings, magic, and active plot line really kept my interest. But again, for me, the author’s use of strong women really make these books for me. They do not sit idly by while the menfolk do everything. Even the king’s wife, who is kept in bedrest while awaiting the birth of their child, is advising her husband. The others not only fight, they lead. Their opinions are important and sought after.
Gareph was my favorite character. He was a bully and a spoiled brat who turned out to be nothing like that. And I may or may not have been afraid to sleep after reading about the giant rats…yuck! ;)
And once again, the scenes leading up to the conclusion of the book were filled with action, making me read faster so I could see what would happen. This is a well-written book for anyone who loves fantasy, which is why I love to read!

This is the third, but not the last, in the Shadow of the Revenant Series. The book does not stand alone, nor does it make any attempt to, which should be fine for those reading the series. I would have liked a few hints to remind me who everyone was, however.
Ghyll is now King with a pregnant wife, and his duties are more tied to the palace, so instead of following him on his adventures as we did before, we follow previously minor characters. This would be okay if it were just one or two characters, but there were too many, and we had new characters as well which made it hard to identify strongly with any one of them. We went on various escapades with various characters, and had various skirmishes with the enemy, so the plot wandered from one event to another in a somewhat disjointed fashion.
Had this been the first or the last book in the series, this wouldn’t have been adequate, but as a middle-of-a-series book, though not as strong as the earlier books, it is acceptable.
This series started well and continued its promise in book two, but though the writing itself was proficient enough—apart from some rather clumsy sentences that I suspect are the result of being translated from another language—this book, as a whole, did not deliver the same excitement. Nevertheless, if you read the first two books, then read on.

This is the Third book in the Shadow of the Revenaunt series and again Paul Horsman is not disappointing me.
A new king is there and again it is a nice fast pace, great story with old friends, strong characters and plots.
I love Ghyll, the king wants him to to proof he is not holding the prince prisoner, but he can't the prince is missing and Ghyll sets out his secret service to find him. in meantime the country is attacked by giant wolves and huge birds.
When his commander is killed it costs Ghyll all he has to calm his man down. He is desperate looking for solutions, especially because he promised his wife he would be there for the birth of their child.
Will he manage all this, safe the country and get the prince back?? go buy the book and read for yourself, I promise you won't regret it. Me personal can't wait to read another book from this authors hand!

This author knows how to write: he possesses the ability to bring his characters to life and to create a tangible atmosphere in a truly fantastic world. Unfortunately, he doesn't take the time to do so: 'Ordelanden' contains too many adventures and too many extra's and not enough pages to properly let them unfold - just like in it's predecessor, De Schaduw van de Revenaunt 2: Zihaen. If this book took twice as much shelf space, it would still be worth it. Or: even more worth it, since the parts of this novel where he takes the time to let a scene play itself out in full are definitely his best.
