Like so many other things here in Detroit, the public library system has suffered a certain amount of damage during these last several years. The beautiful Main Library, thank God, is still standing in all its glory across Woodward Avenue from the equally majestic Detroit Institute of Arts, and I still make a point of going there as often as I can. Many of the branch libraries, however, have not been so fortunate. The John S. Gray branch, a beautiful modern Italian design with Arts & Crafts influence apparent in some of the detailing, is 10 blocks South & 1 block East of my house. It was built in 1913 and was actually closed in 1975, but was kept secured for many years. Now it is simply another abandoned building, still beautiful in decay, like so many others in my beloved city; this little branch library, however, is one that I particularly love. [more to follow...]
