If she helps him meet the deadline for his new resort, he'll give her the tiara. Lost in Love by Kate Perry (Book #2: Summerhill Series) Source: Author My Rating: 4½/5 stars
Portia Summerhill has a serious problem, she is in her thirties, has never had a job and, she still lives at home. With the exception of her exceptional knowledge of English peerage and antiquities, she has no skills and her recently deceased rat bastard father sold the only piece of property she ever, ever wanted to possess, Suncrest Park. Adding insult to injury, her sisters (ALL of them!) are extremely talented and successful, her mother has just brought her an advertisement for a job and, Suncrest Park is being turned into hotel/resort.
Determined to do something, even if it’s the wrong thing and on the advice of her mother, Portia decides to apply for the job. It’s a museum dedicated to English peerage and antiquities; surely Lady Portia Summerhill, member of the English peerage is qualified, right?? Portia strides into the interview with confidence, a snappy suit and, the stunning pearls of her ancestor, Lady Catherine Summerhill. Unfortunately for Portia, the director of the gallery is quite concerned about her lack of skills/training/a degree – you get the idea – but is willing to take her on if and only if she can bring with her the famed Summerhill Tiara. Agreeing instantly and determined to become gainfully employed, Portia strides out knowing good and well that the tiara was at Suncrest Park which is now in the hands of someone decidedly not a Summerhill.
Jackson Waite is a tried and true Texan with the hat, boots, manners, accent and, tight fitting jeans to prove it. What Jackson Waite also has is a job he hates! When his dad was forced to retire due to health concerns, Jackson was forced to take over the family business and he is not pleased; what pleases Jackson even less is the trip to London he is being forced to take. Checking in on a musty old property that is currently being refurbished is the damn last thing Jackson wants to do but his dad is a hard man to refuse and very, very stubborn. Thankfully, Jackson will be able to continue on with his side projects while his second in command, Quinn and their personal assistant Meredith will oversee all the real work. Oh, how little Jackson knows
Neither Jackson nor Portia are at all prepared for their worlds to collide but collide they do! Portia is intent on getting the Summerhill tiara and her job and Jackson is intent on getting far, far better acquainted with the Lady Portia. Though the two are certainly interested in one another and the attraction is undeniable, there are a lot of obstacles to a relationship. First and foremost is the arrangement the two have between them for the Summerhill tiara: Portia has agreed to help Meredith sort and catalogue all of the antiquities from Suncrest Park and in turn, Jackson will hand over the tiara and everyone can go back to their happy little lives. HA!!
As with book one in the series, Kate Perry throws all kinds of obstacles in the path of Portia and Jackson on their way to a wonderful HEA. There are the sisters (YAY!!) who must approve, there is Jackson’s father who hasn’t quite gotten over his son “losing” his former fiancé (who happens to be Meredith by the way!), there’s the great pond between the two of them and, there’s the small matter of Portia finding her self-worth and realizing she really does have skills, talents and, the ability to love someone so very unlike her miserable father. Believe it or not, there is a life to be had for a thirty-something peer who still lives at home, has no degree, and no appreciable skills.
The Bottom Line: I am the new (and totally self-appointed!) cheerleader for Kate Perry’s Summerhill series!! I just love the Summerrhill sister’s and the every-changing and growing dynamic they have between them. I love that Perry didn’t immediately bring all the girls back together as one big happy family as soon as dear old dad died; the girls are working their way back to one another and real relationships in the midst of living their own lives. Even though the story revolves around Portia and Jackson, the rest of the family plays a part (major or minor depending on the person) as do some of the other characters such as Quinn and Meredith. Though there is a large cast of characters, Perry does a fine job of keeping everyone separated and clearly defining their roles. In truth, Perry’s super power is creating very real, very relatable characters that sort of just suck you in. Her secondary super power is inserting those characters into fun scenarios and situations that keep the plot moving along quickly and most interestingly. In all, Lost in Love is a very fine read and very good addition to a delightful series. RAH!!
Portia may lead a life of privilege, but that doesn't mean it's easy. In fact, it seems that everything she took for granted has been turned upside down. The father she adored turned out not only to be a cheater, but to have a whole other family on the side. The home she loved and expected to one day inherit has in fact been sold to a resort company. And it seems that without an education, she may never find a purpose in life.
When her mother suggests she apply for a position at a museum, she's not sure there's any point, but she goes along with it anyway, only to find herself absolutely determined to win the job once she sits down for the interview. There's a pretty big catch, though. Despite her knowledge, the only way they'll take her on is if she provides them with the Summerhill tiara, a family heirloom that was conceded to whoever now owns the family estate she once thought she'd inherit.
Jackson isn't living life on his own terms. Sidelining his own plans for his future, he's stuck managing his father's business, and just when he thinks he might be able to do something for himself, he finds himself headed to England to check on yet another property his father has purchased.
This was a strange read for me -- not a bad read, just a strange one. While I loved Jackson, I didn't really feel much connection to Portia, probably because of her circumstances. She's titled, lives and breathes propriety, and leads such an incredibly different life than any I can imagine. I couldn't help but feel bad for her, though, trying so hard to become her own person and being looked at more for her family name than anything. Seeing Jackson take a liking to her, the way he wasn't distracted by her title or place in society was great. What I really fell in love with, though, was the side story.
Quinn, Jackson's second in command, and Meredith, Jackson's ex-fiance, were what kept me turning the pages almost faster than I could read. I didn't expect this view of another couple's budding relationship, and I absolutely loved both of them. Jackson was hot, but give me Quinn any day. His pursuit of Meredith was teasing but strong, subtle but take-no-prisoners, and completely fascinating. I know I'm probably supposed to be talking more about the main two characters, but Quinn and Meredith simply stole the show for me. Perhaps if I hadn't been so taken with them, I might have gotten more into the main story, but then again, I think the way the book turned to two full-fledged romances at once is simply brilliant. If you love to read about love, this one's a double-win!
*I received a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
A cute story. I liked that the main characters were open to the relationship and there wasn't unnecessary drama getting in the way. They had decent chemistry. Some of the writing feels a bit outdated or something. For example references to 'hooker underwear'.
Lost in Love is the second installment in Kate Perry’s Summerhill series and focuses on Portia. Portia is the sister who comes always across more conservative than the others. She wasn’t my favorite sister, but I have to say after reading this one I feel as if I understand her more, and I have definitely warmed to her. Portia has the most love and knowledge for the Summerhill antiques and her family’s ancestry, but feels that compared to her sisters she has not accomplished much.
Portia feels this may all change when she has the chance of a new job that would be perfect for her, however, in order to get the job there is one condition involving the family jewels, and in order to meet that condition she is going to need the help of a charming cowboy and hotelier called Jackson “Jack” Waite the new owner of the Summerhill estate.
As expected I really enjoy Lost in Love, it was an easy quick romantic read that was low on the drama, but high on the romance and the feel good factor. I enjoyed learning more about the Summerhill history, and seeing Portia go for what she really wanted and deserved. Jackson and Portia are such a fun couple, loved the chemistry, the dialogue that they had together very funny at times, and seeing how Jackson brings out Portia softer and more fun side.
There is a side story involving Meredith, Quinn and a bucket list that was heartwarming, sweet and funny. And of course the rest of the Portia sisters were back Rosalind, Beatrice, Viola, summer, Titania, and Imogen aka Gigi. Love those ladies!! They are as always entertaining, and delightful. It’s lovely to get snippets into what happening in their lives, and hints of what may happen next for them.
Overall I really enjoyed Lost In Love, and I’m looking forward to the next one in the series which after reading the epilogue, I would say the Gigi story. If you are looking for an enjoyable, sexy charming, romantic, easy read then this series by the lovely Kate Perry is for you, as are all her books.
“You’ll know when it’s love. In your heart, you’ll know. There won’t be any questions.”
“He had a server case of lust for a prissy British woman who wore saloon- girl underwear.”
“I don’t want to be your rebound fling. I want to be your forever”
“You don’t pick and choose, Meredith. Both good and bad things happen, and I want to experience then all with you.”
“I‘m pretty hooked on you, Portia. I can’t imagine wanting another woman the way I want you”
Kate Perry is professional writer who knows how to craft a well-structured story. Lost In Love is a tight romance that delivers on all faucets. Perry has a vast library of her work as evidence. This is my first venture with a Perry book and I wasn't disappointed. Lost In Love is the second book in her new Summerhill series. Each book follows the lives of each Summerhill sister as well as a side couple. The Summerhill sister we follow is Portia Summerhill. She's a self-described introvert. She has no real working work experience except for the vast knowledge of her families pedigreed history and it's valuables.
Lost In Love is told in third person from four different points of view. You meet Portia first, then Jackson Waite, her love interest. He's a rich hotelier who comes to London to oversee the renovation and completion of his company's newest resort. The resort is the former estate of the Summerhill family and one Portia had dreamed of living out her days except her father squandered his wealth and sold the estate before he died, never telling his family. Jackson and Portia meet in a very funny and love/hate way. The sparks fly like they should and you know their destined.
What Perry does well is show an enduring romantic relationship while still drawing the reader into to the external and inner conflicts of the characters. Jackson is cocky and self-assured. Portia is feisty but thinks she's timid. They have the perfect push and pull relationship throughout the book.
The other couple portrayed in the book, which I may have wanted to read more about, was Meredith and Quinn. Both Meredith and Quinn work for Jackson's company. Quinn is the brains and brawn behind the operation while Meredith also works close to the higher ups and happens to be Jackson's ex-fiance.
I loved Quinn's self-assurance, just like Jackson, but Quinn was more dominating. He knew what he wanted and he wasn't pulling any punches. He wants Meredith and nothing was going to stop him. With Quinn you get the typical Alpha male many reader clamour for. Meredith needed the dominance in order to pull her out out of herself and I think Perry wrote that quite well. Dare I say that I would love to read a novella of their romance next.
Lost In Love is a very sexy romance with a dash of drama. I don't think anyone would be disappointed reading what Perry has in store for this series. It's interesting, hot, and a good book to curl up with.
Same formula as the previous books, different characters. However, there are a lot of other storylines that happen here as well.
So this one's about Portia, who is encouraged to secure a position at the Museum of British Peerage by her mother, since P knows so much about Summerhill history. But the jerk that runs the MBP will only give her a job to curate the Summerhill collection if she'll handover the Summerhill Tiara... which was last located at her beloved Suncrest Manor which was sold by her late father to a hotel developer.
Jackson is the CEO of the hotel development group... he doesn't want to run it but is forced to by his father, and in fact the day to day ops are handled by Quinn, who the secondary story involves. Portia seeks out J to get the tiara back and ends up sorting and curating the antiques that had been removed from Suncrest to make way for the renovations. J's dad also wants him to get back together with an ex-fiance, Meredith, who is also the interior design person for the company. However, Quinn's clearly interested in helping Meredith accomplish her bucket list, but no one knows that the reason she broke it off with J is because she wasn't in love with him and she was diagnosed with breast cancer.
We also meet Imogen, the Summerhill sister and actress, who is hiding out after a jerk of a boyfriend released a sex tape of them to boost his own brand.
Viola is in the process of divorcing her cheating husband and dealing with her sulky 14 yr old daughter. Luca (the race car driver friend of Nick, Rosalind's fiance) has inserted himself into the lives of the Summerhill women because he's interested in Beatrice. And something's up with Lady Jacs, but no one knows what yet.
The P/J storyline was kinda boring; the Q/M relationship was way more intriquing and romantic.
And one day I'd like to have my own orangery in my home.
I love Kate Perry's Laurel Heights series. Absolutely adore it. It was one of the first books I bought on my kindle. I read every single one of them. Now I saw she has a new series, I was thrilled. This series in completely different, in my opinion, from the Laurel Heights one.
Portia's in in her 30's living at home, kind of a hot mess. She is wealthy so she can afford to not work. In fact she has never really had a job.... oh, to be super wealthy. Her family life seems to be falling apart. He father, she comes to find out, had been cheating on her mother for years. The cheat, has now sold her home. Portia is at a loss. With no job and no skills to get one she is not sure what she is going to do. Her mother suggests she work at a museum. With all their connections it seems like a shoe in. But it is not so easy. The museum wants her to get The Summerhill Tiara. It all sounds too easy, doesn't it?
Enter Jackson. Jackson lives his life the way he wants. He is a man of his own her,s. A true cowboy. Then, when is father falls ill, he is forced to take over the family business. When business takes him overseas, he has no idea how his life will change. (No spoilers here!!)
The chemistry was great between these 2. I love Jackson. I thought he was swoon worthy!
There is plenty of side stories as well in this book. If you have read other Kate Perry books. you know she is setting them up for their own stories. Plus an added hint that there will be a lot more book.... Portia has a lot of sisters ;) While this was very different from Laurel Heights, it was still enjoyable.
So, the description of the book just mentions about Portia and Jackson but forgets to mention about Meredith (Jack's ex Fiance) and Quinn (Jack's friend and coworker). When I was first reading this book and realized that there was more then Jack and Portia's POV it lost me a bit. This has two story lines interwoven into one.
Portia doesn't have much skills but she knows her families history and wants to be able to get a job in Museum. Problem is the director of the place won't consider her request unless she hands over her families heirloom tiara as a part of the museum. In order for her to get it she must offer her services to Jack so she can get the tiara and she can work for him until she gets it. Little did they know they would fall for one another.
Meredith has a secret she couldn't tell Jack and she refuses to live her life with a man she doesnt love. Now she had hopes for the future and makes a bucket list. When Quinn walks into her office and takes a peek at the list he wants to help her especially to help her out with that last thing on the list (Want to know what it was? Read the book!)
I thought the book was interesting, although for me it dragged a bit. I wished there was more drama I guess, but that's OK. I think I'm getting used too having books over do it with the drama. When I was reading this book it I liked how it was two story lines that meshed together without being too much. I liked that I got the point of views of all four characters even if i was a bit confused at first. Overall I did enjoy this book. 4 of 5 Stars!
This is a great rom-com read. I find the Summerhill books filled with mirth, love, lust, passion, happiness and joy. I smile the whole time I read them.
This book focuses on Portia, one of the older sisters, who was most unsettled by her father's death. She was daddy's girl, making all her choices based on what she thought he would approve of. Now, in her early 30s, she is left without a career, education or direction. Momma Summerhill, in yet another attempt to connect with her girls, nudges Portia towards a curator position. This is what ignites Portia and she experiences many new and wonderful things due to this nudge and the channeling of her descendant, the first Lady Amberly.
I loved seeing Portia find herself and fall in love. There was so much hidden beneath her layers, and it was fun to watch that all be uncovered. Jackson was a trip. How can anyone resist a cowboy who loves his momma that much? And speaking of mommas, Lady Jacq is taking her family back one by one. I love that she has taken the loss of her husband and made it into something so positive. This collection of women who we call the Summerhills are quite captivating and I cannot wait to read more of their tales.
The secondary love story also won my heart. I found myself getting a little weepy during that one. Quinn and Meredith are an excellent addition to the "gang" and their story tugged at my heartstrings.
And Luca! I love him more and more with each book. He is a total trip.
The Summerhill books are lots of fun and I can't wait to read Gigi's story next.
You step into the elevator and notice as the doors close that your stockings need adjusting, so you think you are safe to lift your skirt and proceed to adjust them. How many of us have done this? Come on! Be honest! We all have. There is a feeling of safety and privacy in an elevator. Well our main character Portia did just that, except as she was adjusting her stockings to her garter belt, the doors suddenly opened and in came the sexiest, most emboldened, hunkiest Texan cowboy you can imagine. After the obvious embarrassing moment, Portia and Jackson just felt the chemistry and the rest was history as they say.
This is a rather interesting book dealing with the courage to live life, finding your place amongst the rest of the world, and pursuing your dreams. There are different versions of this dilemma: being too accommodating with your parents and letting them dictate what you will do with your life; being afraid of new experiences and failing; and most of all being afraid to dream of what you might want to do with your life.
I found this book both enjoyable and exhilarating at times. You will smile a lot as you begin to acquaint yourself with the Summerhill sisters. I am looking forward to future installments in this series by Kate Perry.
Another fun and entertaining read. We continue to learn more about the Summerhill family, this time the focus is on Portia. Portia has always been the daughter more content to be around history and antiques then forging a path for herself. Finding the courage to go after what she wants she strikes a deal with the new owner of the estate that holds the key. Jackson is the American now in charge of turning the former Summerhill property into a resort. With all the antiques the property holds soon Portia and Jack come to an agreement. She will help him sort out the treasures and in return he will return the Summerhill tiara to her. Their chemistry is off the charts as they bring out the passion in each other. There is also another romance happening between Jack's right hand man, Quinn and Meredith, another member of the team. They are clearly attracted to each other as Quinn helps Meredith scratch things off her bucket list.
I absolutely love Kate Perry! I found that she was able to keep my interest, keep the story light, funny, build in romance and still have some twists to keep me on my toes! I love to read romances where the characters are quirky and make me laugh! Portia and Jackson have accomplished this in this story. Portia the spoiled little rich girl, with minimal skill sets starts of to get a job that she is seriously underqualified. Jackson is another that seems a little prickly until he starts interacting with Portia. The "American Cowboy". (Lucas) Quinn and Meredith is a great story within the story as well. (Pretty steamy scenes) I really hope to read more of the Meredith and Quinn.
With Portia's sisters part of the story line, blond haired, aristocratic features and successful careers, you can only imagine how much more we are going to enjoy hearing more of them in the future Summerhill series!
Lost in love was a truly inviting love story. It was a whimsical romance where the chemistry between the two main character was completely evident and heartwarming. This story will captivate you, it was so charming you can’t help falling in love too!!!!!!!
I really really adored Jackson! He was so charismatic that it made the story a real pleasure to read Portia was not my favorite of the sister leading into this, however she completely grew on me in this installment! It was so wonderful to see her true personality blossom and have her find herself and her true calling.
One of the biggest things I loved about this series was the summerhill sisters. I found them to be enjoyable, amusing and charming. They had such have a wonderful banter that I just wanted to be adopted into their gang. I can’t wait to see what's next for these girls…LOVE THEM!!!!!!!!!
this book takes over Portia's story which I'm sad to say wasn't my favorite character in the last book.
Portia seemed like a spoiled 23 year old something brat in the first book. All of her sisters have managed to find a way in the world but Portia clung to her fathers dirty antiques. Finally with a push from her mother she wasn't expecting she applies for her first job.
The first job leads her to her passion, and to love. Jackson Waite was a favorite character of mine, and I was glad to see sparks fly between the two. I love a story with a sexy cowboy in it ;)
I'm going to anxiously await book 3. I can't wait to see how the story unfolds for Imogen- because I'm sure that's who the next book is on ;)
I loved the story of Portia and Jack. Kate Perry brings these characters to life wonderfully, and the Summerhill series brings new life into the world she created in the Laurel Heights books. Her take on a cowboy romance, where she took the cowboy “off the ranch” and put him in a stuffy proper British world was a refreshing take the common cowboy/high society story. Perry also manages to weave the wonderful “B” story of Quinn and Meredith as well, which is just as interesting and romantic as the “A” story.
The Summerhill sisters are so much fun to get to know and I can’t wait for the next novel to get to know them better.
Portia and Jackson how the most prim and proper of the summerhill sisters falls for a Texan cowboy is something you just have to read for yourself.
I really love Portia her sense of family is never ending and her loyalty to those she loves is to die for even though all the sisters have each others backs portia always goes that extra mile for those she loves and she never lets anything get in her way, even though she comes across as a timid, shy woman there is a lioness underneath who will stop at nothing to protect those she loves.
A truly beautiful romance where opposites not only attract they also live happily ever after :-)
I thoroughly enjoyed the 2nd book in the Summerhill series. Though you meet Portia in the first book I found her hard to like. This book brings her story forth and you understand her better. Now I'm looking forward to Gigi's story, with how this story ended I'm assuming is the next in the series. Brava Kate Perry.
To be honest, this isn't a book I’d normally pick up of my own accord. That said, it was a fun, easy, guilty-pleasure type read that, while somewhat predictable, were certainly enjoyable.
After a lifetime of trying to be someone her now dead father would finally love, Lady Portia Summerhill decides it's time to step out and find herself. But in doing so, she falls in love with ... an American. Good grief! Book 2 of Perry's Summerhill series--featuring the many Summerhill sisters--is a lovely story of opposites attracting. Read it. You'll enjoy the journey.
Aw, man. Kate Perry at her best, I believe. Portia's growth is written well, and the B-plot, notably integrated, is probably my favourite in all of Perry's books. I also love the continuity, particularly concerning the Summerhill sisters' mother (who seems to have tripped on a death flag, heh) and Chloe's sullenness (a novella for her in the future, I guess?).
I liked the story well enough, but kept getting hung up on details that just didn't ring true. After years of reading English novels, this Brit-lite setting just sounded all wrong to me, so the story never became 'real'. It's fun enough and has a good secondary romance included. Light and ephemeral.
Loved returning to the Summerhill family. Because there's two love stories interwoven I would have liked the book to have been a bit longer hence my four star rating instead of five. Cannot wait for the next installment
And the plot thickens! Glad that Portia has finally found happenings, assuming that Imogen (Gigi) is going to be the focus of the third book in the series and really looking forward to the development of her character. Eager to have Titania developed as well.
This is a good book and the type of reading I want at this time. I enjoyed it very much!! Hard to put down. I have the next book in this series and one other ordered. The last one I also have. Great book! Good Author!!!
I really enjoyed this book. Very happy to see Portia found her love/hubby in Jackson. The sisters are close and look out for each other. Just like family is taught to do.
I really love the way you write about the character's in your stories.
The character's are so interesting to read about. They are so full of life and I really like how they interact. They compliment each other really well.
Fabulous series. Love Portia's story, how she transformed throughout the story. And let's not forget Jackson. Who can resist a sexy cowboy? ;-) We also meet other characters and get to know them. Bring on book 3 :-)
