"Don't make me force you , Jess . One way or another , I will be taking you home and that's final . Trust me, I won't think fucking twice about dragging you out of here ", he warns . His tone is final ; laced with such authority and power that even Jen stops laughing instantly .
WOW !! Absolutely loved this book . Based in London for a change , which is a rare thing these days . I got sucked in from the start as it's an easy book to read where you can't help but fall in love with the characters .
Another book boyfriend to add to the list !
Hot Aussie alpha male meets hard working British girl . Loved it . It's a must read
I now need to find myself someone to spill coffee on !!
The story of a rich, domineering Aussie developer Max Wild and London designer – Jess Townsend. Flying solo in the world for the first time in 8 years, Jess has just parted company with her lying cheating arse of an ex, after discovering that he was finding it hard to remain faithful – yep that would do it and out he goes!!! Never in a million years could she have anticipated what the future has in store for her and her imagination while it is more than capable of designing the most lavish and enticing of properties and interiors, it would have never been able to dream up the enigmatic Mr Max Wild – girls like Jess just didn’t get to meet guys like him or so she thought. This dominant Aussie has other ideas and despite her best efforts to keep him at arm’s length – he is like a dog with a bone- he refuses to give up. “Look, what do you want?” she pleads down the line “You” “What?” “You heard me. I want you. All of you Jess. Don’t tell me you don’t feel it because I know you do. Fighting will only make it worse sweetheart, believe me.! Like every great alpha male, Max does what he does best, Jess never stood a chance but she gets under his skin and the two of them end up in very unfamiliar territory. Max doesn’t do relationships and Jess has been there and is in no hurry to be hurt again and she can sense that Max will hurt her at some point – little did she realise just how profound that thought would be. The relationship that develops between the two of them is very sweet and Max comes across as a good guy is a little guarded. He has a fabulous sister – Melissa and a not so fabulous assistant Stella – who needs a bloody good slap! The situation when the pair of them arrive in Australia initially is great but life begins to get in the way and following a medical scare for Mal when he arrives in the country, they hit a bump on their road. The end of the book, came a bit of a surprise, I suppose that is the mark of a good story being told, when you haven’t managed to second guess the ending - but did I like it – no, not at all – don’t get me wrong it was superb in the context of the story but it left me with a WTF moment, staring at my kindle in complete shock – I hate when a story gets to me in that way and I know I have to wait to get the next instalment –Waiting is not one of my strong points – but with Max and Jess I have a feeling that it will be worthwhile. I have one point I would like to make to the author – it didn’t affect my enjoyment of the story but did cause me a bit of confusion - the names – Max and Mal and Jen and Jess – in the beginning I constantly found myself reading back to confirm who was who . Overall, a great read , one that will hold your attention – and believe me you do need to pay attention and one that will keep you wondering – I was left with one little question that I hope is cleared up in the next book – Is Amelia – Josh’s mysterious Mike? Rating 4.5 out of 5
Jess has a job she loves a mediocre relationship and two best friends. What more can a girl ask for.
Well Jess didn't expect to find out on her 8year anniversary that the love of her life has been getting down and dirty elsewhere.
With her friends by her side Jess can get on with her life, free and single is the way she wants it.
That is until she crashes (literally) into Max Wild.
Max Wild is a gorgeous God, arrogant, sexy, and eludes powerHow is Jess going to deal with this arrogant man? What is it about Jess that has Max pussy whipped!
Wow what a great story from the start it had me hooked. I couldn't put it down, I loved how the author has told the story from both Jess and Max's POV.
There are some extremely hot scenes :-) and laugh out loud moments. Delve into this story of heartbreak, passionate embraces and laughter.
Now I have to wait for book two only three days to go. :-)
Max has a motto that runs his life, " Rely on no one, feel no pain." Jess learned at a young age, thanks to her mother, that she was not special and no one would ever love her. Her boyfriend of eight years cheats on her and reinforces the point.
These two troubled people meet and experience a strong magnetic attraction to each other. Jess is drawn to feisty and dominant Max but soon begins to fall for his calm and caring side. Afraid of another heartbreak, she struggles to keep him at a distance.
Max always avoids commitments and is horrified at his changing reactions to Jess. It is amusing to hear him second guessing and analyzing his behavior. The sexual dance of emotions between these two reluctant humans is beautiful music to the reader's ears.
Excellent writing, descriptive and pulls in the reader, ending with a cliffhanger. However, poor editing prevents smooth sailing of the narrative so I can only give Four Stars.
like my facebook page on book reviews www.facebook.com/JadesBookReviews Review - Escape Down Under by S.M Phillips Introduction Following on from her split with Josh two months ago, Jess has thrown herself into her work full throttle, making sure that the one good thing in her life remains the same. Suddenly she is called into an important meeting at work. Absolutely petrified that she is about to lose her job, she does the only thing she knows how. Panic on the inside and walk through it with her head held high on the outside. Jess soon discovers she is being offered a once in a lifetime opportunity, but will she take it? After dealing with an ex who can't let go and a broody mysterious Adonis who won't accept no for an answer, maybe the opportunity of an escape has arrived at the perfect time.
The things I likedMy favourite character had to be Max. Broody, mysterious and sexy. What's not to like? Like I have said before I love a man with problems. A bad past, trust issues that sort of things always does it for me. ;) I also loved Melissa, she is a strong women and stands up to her brother!! The characters felt real to me, I could feel there emotions with them. At the end when Jess finds Max in his office with Stella (hate her) and it breaks her heart, I was right along with her. I was shocked at what I was reading, then my heart starting breaking for Jess. I defiantly wasn't expected the ending that happened, it was quiet a shock. The book did keep me guessing. I wanted to know if Max and Jess where finally going to get it on, then if she was really going to decline the offer to go to Australia. My favourite part of the book was when Jess stood up to Stella, I don't know which time I preferred; the time at Max's house when Stella tries to say that it is her house Jess is in and Jess finds out she is lying and slams the door in her face or the time in the office when Stella tells Jess she is nothing but a plaything for Max, and Jess says that Stella is waiting around waiting for Max. Jess hits the nail on the head and Stella hates that. I think the whole book was written very well, I got all the emotions out the of scenes I needed to or got what the characters were feeling at the time. I nearly cried at the end of the book when Jess see's Stella comforting Max in his office. I felt so sorry for her and just wanted to give her a hug. (I am talking like they are real people here) :/ The story defiantly kept me gripped and turning the pages to find out what happened next. From when I got this book yesterday evening I have wanted to keep reading. But duty calls being a Mom and having a house to look after. But I finally finished it tonight!! But I WANT MORE.
Summary I loved this book and I can't wait for the next book. It had a good storyline, I feel in love with the characters from the beginning and that's what important to me. I don't want to read a story when I don't like the characters. I would recommend this book to anyone over the age of 18. But yes everyone should give it a read. People who like books with relationship drama will love this book.
Rating 5 out of 5 star rating for this book!!
Thank you for taking the time to read my review. I hope you enjoyed it.
Holy Hell in wheels Max Wild is one of the best book boyfriends I've ever had. But shit if my head isn't effed the Hell up right now. I'll write a proper review when my thoughts are forming coherently, as right now, they are scattered all over the place.
*Edit* I can form coherent sentences now, I think!
This is the first book in the Down Under series and boy does it kick off with a bang. Girls, hold onto your panties, you're about to meet Max Wild! Jess doesn't know it yet, but her life is about to get turned upside down and inside out, all thanks to a guy she spills a cup of coffee over. She's on her way to a meeting at work that will see her embark upon the journey of a lifetime, the only down side to which is leaving Jen and George, her best friends, behind. But excitement is in store for Jess from the first time she lays eyes on Mr Wild, her new business associate. She doesn't know it yet, but he is about to rock her world and shake her to the very core. It's like she's been sleepwalking through the last 8 years with Josh and now that their relationship is well and truly over and Max is on the scene, Jess feels awake, rejuvenated and alive for the first time in a long time. She doesn't know it but she is about to be thrown into emotional turbulence and her life will be never be the same. Max Wild changes Jess Townsend forever. But though he wouldn't normally show it, Max's life is about to be changed irrevocably by Jess too. Can the two of them escape their pasts and look forward to a better future, together? Can the ghosts of the past really be outrun or will things come back to haunt them? These are questions you will only find the answers to within the pages of Escape Down Under.
This story is fast-paced, well timed and absolutely brilliantly written. There was plenty of drama that kept me hooked and sitting on the edge of my seat the whole time. I began this book when I woke up in the morning and found that I just had to finish it before bed so I ended up staying up until 1:30am. I was lucky it was my son's school holidays because it wasn't an early morning for me the next day. I couldn't put the book down. If I was cooking, it was in my hand, my multi-tasking skills were certainly tested by this amazing book, but I didn't mind one bit. I fell instantly in love with Max and when I finished the book I was shouting at him - at a fictional character! But we spend so much time with these characters and we immerse ourselves so fully in their world that they don't seem like mere fiction, they feel far more tangible than words on a page. As I got to the end of the book, my heart rose to the back of my throat and the tears fell hot and salty in fat droplets down my cheeks. This is one book not to be missed and I am so glad I had the opportunity to read it.
Thank you Steph for the copy of Escape Down Under. I am looking forward to meeting you in July at Second City Signing to get my Down Under books signed, but be warned, depending where the other books lead, I may either tackle hug you or I may shout at you or maybe even both! ;)
I thought this was a wonderful story with a great plot, however it does end with a cliffhanger which I hate. The story did flow easy and did have a few little issues but all in all was a great read. The story is about love, learning to get over issues, trusting not only in one’s self but others. The author has put a lot of time into writing this, you can tell it was done with love. You know just what is happening and you almost feel as if you were there.
There is a love/hate relationship, they both want each other but neither wants what the other does. Max wants more or less a one nightstand where Jess wants a meaningful relationship. Her mother who we never met sure did a number on her. She feels unworthy and feels she will fail at anything she does. She is a strong woman but the mind games her mother played really messed her up. When it comes to men she is so unsure of herself that it almost makes her look weak when she isn’t. Both her and Max fight the attraction more so her, Max is way out of her league. He is demanding and very alpha he tells her what she will do, not asking but demands. She isn’t one to be pushed around and backs off as he comes forward. By the time he works out he might want more than just one night things happen that puts him right back to not sure what he wants.
I feel Max is ready to settle down but he is afraid to, nothing is forever and he needs forever to overcome his past. When things get tough he walks, then he makes a big mess of it all. You are left wondering what will happen, can they make it work, do they even want to. It will be interesting to see how he cleans up the mess he makes or even if he can.
This book does need some editing you have here for her and so on. With Editing this could be an outstanding read. I did not care for all the F words but it didn’t take away from the story. I think Max would have been more likeable if he didn’t curse so much. I just felt as a wealthy business man he would have come across better without the F this and F that, for me it was out of place. Even with all the above I still felt this was a great read and did enjoy it. I enjoyed it so much that I did pre-order book 2 now it is just finding time to work it in with my other reads. This is one of the reasons I do stay away from cliffhangers, I either forget to read them or I can’t find time to work them in with what I have promised to read.
When my eyes reached his, they locked firmly in place, and I feel an intense heat course through my veins. No matter how much I try to look away, my body betrays me. “With you sweetheart, it could never be quick. I’d make sure I took my sweet time with you.” He seems pleased as he watches a blush spread across my face.
NADBB was asked to review the debut novel of S.M. Phillips. It turned out to be our honor to do so.
Synopsis This book begins with our heroine, Jess breaking up with her cheating fiancé, Josh. She struggles to get past this betrayal and focuses on her work to help ease the pain of her loss. She bumps into our hero, Max, spilling coffee on his shirt. Shortly after their chance encounter, she finds out that she will be working on a project with him. She worries that she won't be able to keep her attraction for him and their work separate. To say it simply, she doesn't.
They embark on a wild hot love affair, where our heroine is swept off her feet by a true and dominating Alpha male.
REVIEW
The Good:
I loved how the author wrote this story. S.M. Phillips has a gift for transporting the reader so they are there in the moment with the characters. Max was a panty melting Alpha that you couldn't help but love.
The Bad
The characters were confusing. The female had enough of him, but two seconds later he was going down on her in the office. The hero would be ultimate Alpha and then he'd cry. There was a cliffhanger. To some this isn't a deterrent, and we would be fine with it, but prefer there's a warning in the blurb before we shell out our money. At times it seems this story was too... contrived.
In closing, this book wasn't bad, we're interested and the author shows promise. There were parts we enjoyed immensely. We'd be willing to read more from this author and probably will just to see what happens next.
Escape Down Under is the first book I have read by this author, to be honest I randomly one-clicked this book when it was free on Amazon and it has sat on my Kindle until today when I started to read it!!
Max Wild, where have you been all my life!!!!
I need to warn everyone that this book finishes on a cliff hanger , when I realised it was the last page I will admit that I facebook stalked the author, hoping she is doing a blog tour for the second book Fallen Down Under which is out in November.
I love Max he is male perfection, he’s alpha enough to make your panties damp but sensitive enough to make you want to reach into the book and give him a big hug.
As you can imagine I have spent most of the book in a state of swoon pretty much from the moment that Max dominantly declared that he wanted Jess!!!
I can completely understand why Jess can’t resist Max, I loved that she even tried. Jess is adorable I loved how real her character felt, as a reader I could see qualities of myself in her but also my friends and family too. She is a female character that is incredibly easy to relate to.
Christ talk about sexual chemistry as a couple Jess and Max are smoking hot and seriously sexy.
God Stella needs a slap, I hate her soooo much!!!!!
Well Melissa and Heath blatantly have a thing for each other; I’m hoping that S.M. Phillips writes their story soon.
This is a fab book, the story draws you in and I honestly couldn’t put it down. I hate cliff hangers especially when the next book is not out yet.
I actually need the next book like now!! I mean I really, really need to know what happens.
I loved this book and would highly recommend it; I can’t wait for the next book 4.5 stars!!!
I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
The writing in Escape Down Under flowed really well and although it was a different spelling and slang, it wasn't hard to pick up on a lot of the tone behind the words(and if you've watched any amount of BBC, it wasn't hard at all). So that was something that was really well done. There was no confusion and it just all really flowed well.
There were also very good descriptions of incidents. You almost felt as if you were watching it happen in slow mo because you got that good of a description.
While we get both character's perspectives, Escape Down Under is mostly done from Jessica's perspective which is good because it allows us to have a bit of mystery around Max's actions and thus leave us wondering. But when we did get chapters from Max's perspectives, which we did occasionally, I found myself really enjoying those chapters. Mostly because Max could be humorous but not actually meant to be humorous. So he'd be trying to talk himself out of something and we're like fat chance of that buddy. It was great.
And now I'm just going to mention the ending in general terms(don't want to spoil it for you). But this was actually really, really well done. There was a cliffhanger but at the same time the way the book ended that could have ended the series. Sure, I wouldn't have been happy because I would have wanted to see what happened otherwise but it just had that tone of finality to it. Which was really well done, and it just...yeah.
Escape Down Under was a great read and I strongly encourage you to read it before the sequel Fallen Down Under comes out.
Escape down Under is S M Phillips debut book and definitely worth picking up.
Jess has been betrayed by her fiancé Josh, she suffered through the pain and come out the other side, not expecting to meet Mr Wild!
Max Wild is rich but doesn't come across that way, yes his arrogant and bossy in a sexy way but I get the feeling there's more to him than we've been told.
Jess is a normal girl that doesn't expect much from life, she has her career which is about to take off more than expected.
Max won't let things lie and Pursues Jess until he has her in his bed.....
What will happen to these two, both trying something new, you'll just have to read it and find out. Be prepared for some hot and sexy scenes, I loved watching Max with Jess, his protective and caring and he definitely can't get enough of her.
Another thing up I really liked was the dual POV yes we get Both Jess and Max's POV. Let's not forget their friends they play a strong role in the book too.
Word of warning there is a cliffy......
I thoroughly enjoyed this new authors writing, her characther's are likeable and realistic and storyline beleivable, maybe a dream come true beleivable but still a possibility!
Give her book a try, max is one sexy man and you'll be adding him to your book boyfriend list I'm sure.
Jess just broke up with her boyfriend of eight years after finding out that he's been cheating on her. Thank goodness she has her friends and her work to keep her busy after a dramatic end to that relationship. I absolutely adore her BFF Jen! She's hilarious and loves Jess enough to have her back in all things. Their banter made me laugh out loud.
Then she runs into and spills coffee on someone that changes everything. She's overwhelmingly attracted to him and he brushes her off with a harsh remark and moves on. When she shows up to a meeting with her boss, Jess finds that hunk of man sitting there too and is officially introduced to Max. Turns out they are going to be working together which also involves a trip to Australia. Once in Australia there are a few bumps in their bliss. Not even going to say the tramp's name. Wanted to shake Max hard.
I loved Max! He is one hot naughty talking bossy man! And holy hotness...Max and Jess together are combustible! I so enjoyed their story and have to admit that I read it very quickly, bought the second in the series - Fallen Down Under, devoured it the same day, and am now not so patiently waiting for the third.
I received this book for a fair and honest review. I enjoyed reading this romantic story of a heart that is on the mend and how electric the relationship is. The story sets out with a woman named Jess and how she ends up getting rid of a longtime boyfriend and explains why she is leery. She has a great job and good friends that help her get on with her life. She is offered a great chance to move up in her career and in the process meets a very attractive sexy man named Max. As things progress with her career, things also change with her love life and she tries to fight it. Her knowing full well he will be included on this project changes the scenario to a completely interesting outcome. The whole problem is can Jess allow her walls she has built up to let him in or will she continue to fight him off? I think this story is a good romantic read that will leave you wanting to know more about Jess and Max. There are times when I find myself wanting to yell at Jess for jumping to conclusions, but at some point we all have done that. The story is packed with emotions and will make you want to know more about their love story.
This book really surprised me. I wanted to have a change of reads from the dark side to a little bit lighter. What drew me to this book was the title Escape Down Under. I though oh a book set in Australia, nice change. I am not big on books that are set in countries (I prefer ones set in the states). This said I think it because I can identify with places better other than that it doesn’t matter to me. With Escape Down Under I didn’t feel lost and I could get a picture in my head what it might look like. The book was very well put together and flowed well. You are given just enough of each character’s past that you have a grip of what makes them tick.
Jess I love her strong stick to your guns personality. I don’t mind the female to break some we all know we have that point in us. It was good to see that when Jess breaks, she pulls herself up and moves on from the down fall. Max comes in with the guns blazing not really knowing anything about Jess except that he has to have her. He is a little mysterious and whole lot sexy.
Just a warning Phillips has a cliffhanger that is going to have you screaming!! We all know that is always a selling point for me.
~~I received this in exchange for my honest opinion~~
I have read S.M. before and she hasn't disappointed, and she hasn't disappointed in this book either. Jess is a designed at Stanton's. She loves her job, her boss, and her friends Jen and George. When she gets the promotion of a lifetime, she finds it hard to leave her life behind-even if it is just for a little bit.
Max always gets what he wants, and women are no exception. That is until he meets Jess. Her stubborn hardheadedness intrigues Max, and he can't get her out of him mind!
When they finally get to where they are going, everything seems to be going great. Life is great. Things are going well with the new project. There are just two obstacles that Jess needs to overcome. Stella and Mel.
This book keeps you interested in what is going on. You start out reading and before you know it, you have finished the book and you are wanting more. She always does this, that is what keeps me wanting more from S.M. You need to get this book.
I absolutely loved this book and I couldn’t put it down once I’d started. It leaves you on one hell of a cliff hanger so be warned!
All your other Book Boyfriends need to put to one side because Max Wilde is in town and he is SMOKING!! This is told from both POV's and is just amazing.
Jess has been betrayed by her fiancé but she survives through the pain and pulled through the hard times. She is introduced to Max, who is normally an arrogant love em and leave em type of guy, but when he and Jess literally bump into each other, a connection is made and this makes Max question his current lifestyle. Max also holds the power to change Jess's future forever.
Can Jess tame Max and get him to change his ways or will Max break Jess's heart.
This is a definite, without a doubt must read and a very worthy 5 stars. I can't wait to start the next one.
I read this book in one afternoon because I simply couldn't put it down!! Max Wild is seriously hot, dominating, sexy, charismatic, mysterious....did I mention HOT?? Jess is a relatable leading lady who is my kind of gal...sassy, feisty yet at times vulnerable. All the support characters complement this sexy read really well and I found myself attached to them. What I love most about this book, is the humour and the witty banter....S.M Phillips will pull you in with her fabulous words, one minute I'm in London, the next I'm sunning it up in Australia with a mojito in my hand!! I CANNOT wait for the next book, really I can't....I need my Max Wild fix!
What a great debut novel... really pulled me in and left me desperate for the second book.
I loved this story - Jess is trying hard to get over a bad break up - the worse kind! So, when her boss offers her the chance of a lifetime, she can't refuse, right?
Enter Max Wilde... he's about to rock Jess's world and leave her decision to take a risk hanging in the balance.
The chemistry between Max and Jess jumps off the page, and SM does a great job creating great banter and passion between her main characters.
The book is a cliffhanger, but book two is out soon... You need Max Wilde in your life!
Whilst reading this book I've also been reading a book about Fred West (strange mix I know) but I swear after the head fuckery of Fred Max Wild ensured I went to bed with only thoughts of mucky blonde hair, hot sex on golden beaches & fun in the sun! I loved this book. I loved the setting, the characters & their interactions. They really pull you in with their emotions, you feel for them. Max Wild got me hot & bothered & I cannot wait to read more of him in Fallen Down Under. I'm not a fan of cliffhangers so I'm glad part 2 is available now because I'd be totally frustrated if I had to wait for more wild fun with Max.
Max Wild is everything you can possibly think of, rich, sexy and very forward with what he wants. Used to getting his hearts desire, he has met his match when he bumps into Jess, who unlike many contemporary romance heroines, is very spunky, straight forward and knows herself. I found that quality very refreshing.
This is a brilliant debut, with its fair share of steamy sex scenes, and will have you screaming at the end for the second instalment.
I'm a little torn with this book. I liked most of it, but found myself getting frustrated with the story line. I think the hero is totally hot one minute, and maybe a little bi-polar the next. I liked him but wanted him to be more consistent. Maybe the next book will reveal why he is such a mess over Mal. Jess was a pretty good lead, but I wish she would have been a little more resistant at the beginning. She is very submissive to him, but it works for them. Over all good book- with a cliffhanger. I will probably read the next book
I enjoyed how the author told the story from each person's point of view. Max is the type of man most women dream of (even if they don't say it). I loved reading how Jesse is coming into her own sexuality and her own power as a woman. You were able to identify with the struggles she had to overcome after being betrayed in a long term relationship. The only reason I didn't give it five stars is I didn't want the book to end there. I want more and can't wait to see how Max gets out of the mess he's in. Grace Rhyian, author
Loved loved loved this book! Well written apart from a few glitches but totally enjoyable none the less. Steph has the potential to be a knockout author and I am so excited for book number 2. I don't do spoilers, but there is a huge cliffy and I need the next instalment like, yesterday!!! Great job girlie xx
Absolutely Loved this Book. Love the Jess the female lead is quick, witty and takes No Crap from Anyone, which is different from other Female leads you read in other Books. The Male lead Max Wild is Hot, sexy and dominating in which all us ladies Love. I can not wait for the second book x
Fucking cliffhanger!!!!!!!! Uuuuggghhhhh this book was so damned good!!!! I usually steer clear of series that aren't stand alones.. Just because I find they can be drawn out ... So far I'm so hooked on this damn book!!!!! Loved every minute of it!!!
I loved this story and the characters. I hated how poorly it was edited there were multiple mistakes in each chapter It just gets annoying to read after awhile and makes it hard to enjoy the story. Another gripe would be that I bought this on Kobo went to by the next one and Kobo is not selling it.
Was hooked from the start. Could not put it down great story line for a debut novel. Looking forward to part 2 on 2nd November to see what happens next with Jess and Max
It was hot. But Max is maybe too alpha male for modern times? He’s yummy, but a bully.
And I know that Jess was right about not giving Josh the time of day despite his repeated attempts to get back with her ... but if she and Max truly had a connection, shouldn’t she let him try to explain? I have a feeling the scene with Stella was all Stella’s doing ... and a misunderstanding?
And what about Mal?! Will he pull through? What’s going on with Amelia? Is she maybe with Josh? I thought that maybe she was seeing Mal behind Daisy’s back ... but nah.
I am very disappointed in this read. By the time I made it to the second chapter I had my doubts about the heroine, but I pushed through giving it the benefit of the doubt. Wrong answer! And don't get me started on the ending (if you can call it that) . I will put S. M. Phillips in the just say no category.
