Forcibly returned to the family from which she was taken as an infant, Anna’s world is turned upside down in a whirl of unfamiliar experiences and unfamiliar faces. She may have lost her status, brother, and fiancé, but Anna’s determined to show that her year of preparation wasn’t for nothing as her new life as a commoner begins…!
This continues to be much darker than its cheerily-punctuated title would suggest, and while "dark" isn't always a marker of quality, in this case, it does help the story to stand out. The more upsetting aspects of the tale are also deserved - blame is placed squarely on the parents who can't see past their own prejudices and insecurities, while characters like Anna's brother Henry are given reasons for their bad actions, and forced to begin reckoning with them.
It's not perfect, but it is sincerely trying to be the best that it can in order to organically tell its story. I appreciate that, and I'm well and truly invested in where this is heading.
I feel so conflicted about how to rate and review this volume because the one thing I most desperately wanted to see wasn't until the last chapter! 😭😭😭
Everything up to that point was good, but it honestly wasn't what I wanted to see the MOST, so I feel like I'm not fully appreciating this volume as much as I should be because WOW! Anna really is taking everything in stride! I know she has had dreams where she wakes up with tears in her eyes, but I'm really amazed at how upbeat she is.
And Klew! Little man is hands down the MVP of this volume! I'm so so so thankful Anna has her with him because his presence seems to bring comfort to her whether she realizes it or not!
Going back though, I think a great takeaway from this volume was that while Anna seemed to admire and be jealous of Annette, she learned that things were far from perfect. I think it was a wake-up call for Anna that while things have been hard for her, it wasn't just her and that Annette had things hard in her own way too.
I'm going to give this manga another volume because I still enjoy it (and the art is amazing!), but I'm so desperately hoping we see more of a certain character in the next volume!
I like the story so far I just wish the volumes were longer. Everything's over before you know it, so the reed goes by so incredibly fast that it's jarring.
I’m enjoying Anna’s character growth and excited for the drama with Ed! Hopefully the next volume has a bit more plot movement (though I do still like the series even with the slow pace).
This volume felt very “middle volume syndrome” where we’re just treading water waiting for the real action to start, aha. But I’m glad to be back in the swing of it.
