Imagine controlling—avoiding—reversing!—the “health hazard of the 21st century” (World Health Organization), the disease that afflicts nearly 26 million Americans and is an imminent threat to an additional 80 million adults and children. That’s exactly the promise of The Diabetes Reset by Dr. George King, research director and chief science officer at Harvard’s Joslin Diabetes Center, the world’s largest and most respected diabetes research center, synonymous with revolutionizing the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of diabetes.
Based on the most cutting-edge research—including the groundbreaking discovery of brown fat in adults and its role in burning calories and enhancing the effects of the body’s own insulin—The Diabetes Reset translates the latest findings into a plan that will let readers avoid, control, and even reverse type 2 diabetes. The program begins with losing weight—and shows why losing only 5% of body weight makes a life-changing difference. It explains how a good’s night sleep can significantly lower blood glucose levels (and why sleep deprivation works in reverse). It disentangles the carbohydrate confusion, reveals how to decrease the body’s inflammatory response, and explains the importance of moderate exercise. There are eight strategies in all—if you implement only one, your type 2 diabetes will improve. Pursue all eight of them, and you can stop type 2 diabetes in its tracks. You can even reverse it—effectively resetting your body’s glucose metabolism for a long, healthy life.
I'm giving it five stars because of the helpful and timely content. I read this because I teach pre-diabetes classes through the YMCA. The program is research based and approved by the CDC. I want to learn more about the disease, and this proved to be a valuable reference. It also has a lot of helpful information for anyone; whether you have been diagnosed with pre- or diabetes, whether you are at risk, or whether you are just interested in nutrition and how the human body works. The author works out of the Joslin Diabetes Center in Boston, one of the gold standard institutions for treating diabetes.
This had so much great information but it was a tough read. I have adhd and more than once I was like just get to the point 😆 I’m glad I finished it because I learned a few things but it was hard for me to get through.
With the diabetes epidemic becoming a world wide problem, this is a really informative book full of information. Not just for the ones at risk of diabetes or the diagnosed diabetic, it has clear, informative information that can be applied by anyone looking to loose weight and improve their lifestyle. There are samples of meals, exercises and relaxation techniques. There was a lot of information but it was easy to follow.
Thank you to the publisher and Netgalley for a copy to read and review
Excellent information. Very scientific and not the easiest to read. Promotes Rural Asian Diet (70% plant, 15% fat, 15% protein) along with exercise, stress and inflammation control. Enjoyed it because he only gets his conclusion from scientific studies and will state when something seems promising, but hasn't been tested/confirmed.
*Goodreads has the wrong author linked to this book.*
Written by an Asian, for Asians, who seem more susceptible to Type 2 Diabetes, he recommends a Rural Asian Diet, extremely low-fat and almost vegan, plus exercise. Not especially compelling, but reassuring about low-fat.
