Court of Elves #5

The Lethal Deception

Rate this book
Ever since the High Elves landed on the coast, they have insisted that they are solely there to establish diplomatic relations, but the underlying threat of their presence has been felt throughout the lands. Danger lurks around every corner, and all it would take is one spark to ignite a war.

Groups who worship the High Elves as gods are spreading quickly through the courts, and with no easy way to deal with them, Kenna and the others find themselves in the middle of what looks an awful lot like an invasion. In this politically precarious landscape, Kenna's circumstances rapidly worsen as enemies start appearing from both without and within.

When push comes to shove, there might not be a way to defuse the situation. How can Kenna and her friends keep each other safe when there are no good options left?

This one made me feel like I really knew her and how she thought all the time. Maybe because she had more then herself now to think of and talk to but that made it more predictful and not as much mindblowing as it has been in this series. BUT it's still a very good book and I really need to know how the things, they're about to do, will pay out!

How is it that this series isn't more popular????? WHY AREN'T PEOPLE NOT TALKING ABOUT THIS SERIES?????

Marion has done it again; it amazes me how her writing is so good and easy to read. You literally fly through the book and don't even know it's about to end till you get to the last page. It's effortless and so enjoyable.

Kenna is everything an FMC should be. She's still this badass and strong character but, she's grown so much. She's finally in a good place, WELL DESERVED PLACE and she is going to do everything in her power (hello Fire) to stay there. It's interesting to see her and Mordren banter and talk, cause I feel he's like her (like her male twin) and yet so different. And their special moments... YES. I love their chemistry.

We get to see more magic, more fights, and just more of this world. I feel like the other books were centered more on Kenna herself and here it's centered around her and the world of the elves. Again, the writing is amazing. The story and plot are great and even though there's always a small (or big) plot twist, you see how it's all connected.

I can't wait to read the next book and see what Kenna does

Okay wow! So I wasn't too sure how Marion Blackwood would top The Fire Soul, the fourth book in this series, but she managed.

The Lethal Deception takes readers in a new direction, causing an us vs them with the High Elves. Kenna is her usual badass self, and a certain slimy backstabber makes yet another appearance.

The relationship between Kenna and Mordren heats up, and I am absolutely here for it! Evander sticks his nose in places it doesn't belong, and my two favourite thieves are taking a quick break from thieving and are instead becoming High Elf fighting machines.

The action in this book is non-stop (literally, poor Kenna!!) and the book is very fast paced. Marion Blackwood's writing flows perfectly, as per usual. I am very eager to see how this latest apparently poorly thought out plan turns into something wicked and conniving, bring on book six!! And honestly if you haven't picked up this series yet, please get started asap because it is so damn good.

Huge thank you to Marion Blackwood for including me in her street team and providing me with an ARC of this book to review.

This book was a complete adrenaline rush. Marion Blackwood is the best author. Like she can sweep the earth below your feet and you won't even know till it's too late. And that happens me everytime I read her book and I'm not surprised anymore.
Everytime the friendship between Hadeon, ellyda, Elian, mordren, and Kenna surprises me and how they would give up their freedom for each other.
The character development Kenna has gone through is the best thing to read about. She has grown more and more into herself.
Kenna and mordren Ughh they've stolen my heart. And omg that ending! When Kenna gets tired of playing safe you can expect her to go crazy and that's what she's planning! I can't wait to read the next installment!

As always, I'm in love with a work of art by Marion. It's fast-paced, adventurous and incredibly well-written.

The world is getting bigger, truths are revealed and relationships are evolving. The characters connect on another level and I love it!

I love the fact that there are plans that fails at times and the main characters struggles in life. However, Kenna and her people scheme and battle their way out. So excited for the next book!

Again greatly written and fast paced. I just can’t understand how you can write a series that has a constant core event (scheming) and still manage to keep it interesting. I love it!
I love the relationship between Kenna and Mordren and the character development of Kenna.

Kenna is finally where she needs to be - but the action and adventure is just getting started.
Loved the worldbuilding, the action scenes and the very different, very fun and multilayered characters. I wish I could continue right away with the next book, the suspense is killing me :)

Kenna

There's something about their relationship that is a little YA.

Okay, so someone's trying to kill Kenna. That's the plot of this book.

There's an opportunity here for Evander to cause some conflict in this book.. can he do it? Maybe her conscience against killing people... maybe to plant doubt about Mordran and Idra... who they really are, their relationship motives, what really drives them? He's already kind of tried with Mordren. Evander is kind of likable, and it could be believable that he wants what's best for Kenna... it could also be believable that he wants Kenna for himself... what will he do?

The birthday party scene was fun, but it kind of highlights how little is happening. I liked her conversation with Eilan about why he doesn't date... they can't really accept only part of him... and I know idra and Hadeon will get together.

So they're face to face with their armies against Anron... and I have no clue what this environment looks like. Grass? Trees? Numbers? Nada. So much detail is lacking. Really, what happened? Is it windy? Is it warm out? Is it winter? No idea what the atmosphere is. Are they standing close? How can I hear the enemy taking, but they can't hear the talking on this side? I dont have enough world building.

The whole sequence from the king being murdered to their escape to them quickly deciding what to do next and who to gather... to Hadeon deciding he'll give himself up so that he can be with and protect Ellyda, who was captured, was really good. Only a few minutes, but when it's good, it's good. But it's a little annoying that this happened directly after such a flat scene.

Oof, that's rough. Your stepfather hired the Assassin's to kill you.

I struggled a little bit with this one, not because it wasn't enjoyable but because it's just not reaching the potential that I know this author can do.

Their relationship is a tiny bit cringe. There have been a couple sweet moments like when they said I love you and how it's shown that he sees her for who she is, and he likes her that way. But the other stuff is a little cringe. Reminds me of people who need to make sure others see and hear what they're doing... like there's a bit of a show to it - even to each other. I don't like it.

I considered stopping here but I really do want to see the land of the high elves. I also like the potential for them dealing with Anron, instead of her struggling through it.

I decided to stop here. Prisoner Healer is giving the effort I want now. A reluctant 4.

Ranking:

-Book 3: she teams up with Mordran to kill Prince Volkan. Meanwhile, learning the family dynamic between him and his friends and meeting the high elves. They fail, and she becomes a spy/slave in his court. Huge shift in quality in this book. Very focused and intentional with every chapter. 4 (24 "wicked")
-Book 5: Someone's trying to kill Kenna. Her birthday. The war starts, and the king dies. All the princes get the black bracelets, and she saves everyone in the end.
(23 "wicked") A reluctant 4.
-Book 4: Volkan's slave. Kenna is being used to toy with Mordren. Kenna plotting to mess with Volkan from within. 4. After book 3 because the world in book 3 was just a little bigger. It got smaller in this book. (24 "wicked")
-Book 2: Her family admits they sold her (she wasn't taken). She's all on her own. She meets Valerie and Theo. She plays games with Mordren, and he plays back. She tricks him into buying her freedom from the Stone Prince. 4 (23 "wicked")
-Book 1: Intro to the story. She helps her family pay off a gambling debt. Evander, her "mark," is secretly a spy for the princess who attempted to kill the king. 3.5 (15 "wicked")

Okay, let me start off by saying holy moly, Kenna’s powers are FIRE (literally) this book! The development of both the powers and her self-acceptance after all her development so far needs special mention!

The battles and high adrenaline situations were just non stop and so well written, and I really enjoyed how much more magic was written into the fight scenes.

I adore how action packed Marion’s books are with so much happening at all times, and this instalment was no different! So many different elements and aspects of the plot to consider and take in that perfectly balanced each-other out.

The romantic scenes between Kenna and Mordren got super spicy in this book! Personally, I would love to see more romantic scenes without all the power plays and scheming jabs involved all the time as it started to feel a little repetitive, especially as they are in a relationship that’s more than just sexual tension and passing comments now.

The first 30% felt as though it was written at a different pace to the rest of the book and I found it hard to concentrate getting through, but once things kicked off I flew through the rest and super excited for the setting of the next book and what adventures will unfold!

*slight spoiler*
I was annoyed from the moment Evander was brought back into the story, but was here to see what would become of his character… goodness, after his efforts in this book, I hope he stays out of the story because he’s been one character that I couldn’t enjoy after the first book and didn’t find him necessary to the continuation of the story, despite maybe as a passing side character. But I also completely understand why things needed to happen the way I did anddddd I wouldn’t be mad if Kenna takes up BBQing traitors for a hobby in the next books.

“We all have different priorities in life. At the end of the day, my priorities aren’t better or worse than someone else’s.”

After successfully completing her mission, Kenna finds herself as Lady Firesoul, ruler of the Court of Fire. She’s always dreamed of ruling, but getting handed an already established court produces some issues. Especially since the High Elves and their worshippers are spreading all over the courts.

A tragic incident leads to chaos in the courts. Kenna and her friends must discover how to stop the invasion and save the people. But how could they possibly do that when the High Elves hold much more power than them. With the help of Mordren, her friends, and the elven princes, Kenna is determined to save her court and the rest of the citizens from the High Elves. But it will not be easy. Especially since Kenna is simultaneously finding herself in dangerous situations as new leader of the Court of Fire.

Once again, Marion Blackwood has blown me away. The characters. The plot. The world. Everything about this book and this series is amazing. It was so interesting to see Kenna go from spy/slave to Lady Firesoul, leader of the Court of Fire.

Mordren and Kenna’s relationship is one I absolutely adore. I think it’s because they both have always allowed the other to be themselves. I am excited to see their journey continue in the next two books. Speaking of relationships, I love how the group works together and are always trusting of one another.

I fear that I will never get over this incredible series.

Can a girl get beat up as much as Kenna? Between dealing with assassination attempts, high elves , surly exes and family this woman perseveres. Thank goodness there is Mordren who always has her back and front. The high elves are definitely up to no good and start taking over the courts and setting themselves up as Gods. But Kenna worked too hard to get where she is and is not going to bow to anyone. The good thing is that Kenna is surrounded by people who have faith in her and know that she is wily enough to get things done. But then we have Valerie, the human thief who is as unpredictable as Kenna. This character is great, she is brash and brave and I think she just may have her eye on Elion. If you don't know who he is then you haven't read the series. There are some heart breaking moments but the bond between all of the courts strengthen. The series just continues to get better and now I have to wait until July for the next book, sigh!!!
There is is steaminess to satisfy everyone, some potential steaminess coming down the pike but the relationship between Kenna and Mordren continues to build and in a good way. It helps to have someone who believes in you. Now I just need to be patient until July. I definitely recommend this series along with the prior one. Strong female characters who work hard to get what they want. Not bad at all ladies, keep going!!! And no, normally it doesn't take me this long to finish, I had to finish some library books first.

Why is it not possible to give more than 5 stars people?! Because this book (actually, all the books in this series so far!) deserve way more than 5 stars!!

As with all her previous books in this current series (and The Oncoming Storm series), Marion has once again hit the nail on the head and created an epic tale based around a morally grey character who loves to play the long game to achieve the ultimate goal - security, peace and love.

Kenna reminds me very much of my (still very much alive!) Book crush that is Storm, she's a bit of a lone wolf who will do what it takes to get what she wants and finds *the family you choose for yourself* along the way. She's a fiery soul (pun intended!) Who loves hard, she's growing and learning throughout each book, along with the other remarkable characters that make up the core group in this series.

I have had more than a few giggles while reading this book (along with some genuine worries for a character or two and some suspicions and guesses as to what might come next). My favourite standout comments revolve around an endlessly spinning spatula and a fantastic little spoon (*giggling while typing!*) - seriously, I'm not gonna write the paragraph, you'll have to read it!!! No, really, go read it!!

To sum up, I can't give this series enough love! As always, Marion, you are epic! Can't wait for the next one! 😍

I don’t know how Marion continues to outdo herself but she does it every time, I loved it!
The scheming was spectacular as usual, naturally throwing me off just when I think I have things figured out. I will brag that one detail I did guess right! But the rest of the ending gave me whiplash as I tried to keep up with the mind blowing turn of events.

I enjoyed the internal struggle to figure out if someone can still be good even though their capable of bad things. Having to accept that not all things are black and white in the world. I also loved the unconventional romance amongst all the scheming and chaos. It didn’t fall into the usual YA romance you see in most books, its more of a rivalry between partners, pushing each other out of their comfort zones, testing one another’s limits, stubbornness, pride, and trust, is so refreshing.

I almost feel tired, like I’ve been the one on the journey to overthrow those bastard High Elves. That’s how immersive the story feels/pulls you in! I can’t wait to read the next installment in the series. The world is expanding and I’m ready to dive in to more of Kennas journey!

I mean where do I even start with this amazing continuation of this amazing series….HOLY WOW! As usual this book has everything that a reader wants in a fantasy read. With Kenna and Mordren we have banter, steam and so much swoon that it’s ridiculous! And all of the side characters bring so much to the table, and they all fit together so seamlessly! Idra, Valerie and Theo steal the show for me in this book.

In this book we see the High Elves really ramping up their plans for the Princes and their courts. If I didn’t despise the High Elves already, I most definitely do now! Marion knows how to write a villain! Everything starts to look pretty bleak, but our blackmailing, traitor spy does not disappoint. Things definitely do not go smoothly for Kenna and crew, but their determination and loyalty to each other really shine in this book. This book was literally nonstop action, with nail biting suspense, and epic twists and turns.

Again, Marion, you have left me wanting more and absolutely waiting on pins and needles for book 6!

Thank you to the author, Marion Blackwood, for providing a copy of Lethal Deception (Court of Elves book 5). I have reviewed honestly.

Lethal Deception features, but is not limited to, the following themes:
○ Elves
○ Courts
○ Magic
○ Blackmail
○ Schemes
○ Betrayal
○ Light romance
○ Snarky FMC

My overall rating for Lethal Deception is…

5 Stars!

I say it every time I read another of Blackwoods insane Court of Elves books, but it really is so incredible how each book still manages to shock and excite me so much! Kenna in Lethal Deception was unstoppable! As snarky as ever, this sneaky little spy has raised the bar yet again! And this plot she's got planned for the next book in the series... I just can't wait to see how it plays out! Overall, another engaging, sexy, dangerous and unpredictable book by a seriously talent indie fantasy author.

Every time I read one of these book, I tell myself that I will definitely see the twist coming, and there's no way Marion can trick me again.... and then I get tricked again and miss it completely!

I love seeing Kenna in charge, as she gets used to the twists and turns that are needed to keep power. I'm also loving every scene we get with Mordren and how their relationship is going/heats up! I also love how the found family strengthen each other and how their relationship grows!

I'm excited for their newest plan and can't wait to see where book 6 will take us!

A huge thank you to Marion for the ARC of this amazing book in exchange for an honest review and for having me on her street team!

I received an arc copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

WELL HOT DAMN!!! Once again I did not guess almost any of this happening.
Except the dirty betrayer!!!! I just had a feeling the dirty betrayer was going to once again be a dirty betrayer!

I love how whenever there are schemes even you as the reader are left in the dark. So when everything goes down you are like wait what???!!!!

I cannot wait for the next book!
Mordren is a fantastic man!
I love Valerie and Theo, they crack me up.
And I do so hope I see a romance between Ellyda and Vendir. I mean it was her looking at him once in Ellyda fashion but I still hope.

Thank you to the author for a copy of the eARC in exchange for an honest review.

These books are so much fun! I've really grown attached to the characters, especially our protagonist Kenna. This was such a fast read, but so much was packed into it. I'm always surprised by the plot twists, although I'm also not usually good at guessing them anyway. But from the reviews I've seen by other readers, it seems they didn't see the plot twists coming either, so you can expect a good time!

I can't wait for book six! This series is so much fun.

Ooh this took me way too long to get back to, and when I did, I read it in a few hours.

Facing complete defeat at the hands of seemingly invincible High Elves, Kenna, Mordren and crew need a miracle. And a whole lot of spatula-powered deceptions, failed plans and hurt-me-bad action.

Once more, Marion tortures her characters with high stakes and bitter defeats that keep you turning pages until the very end.

Bring on the next book!

I received this book as an ARC from the author and this is an unbiased, honest review.

Keep your friends close and your enemies closer.

Kenna can't catch a break. Someone is always trying to kill her. Random assassins, high elves on her tail, and betrayals she did not see coming. There is never a dull minute in the Court of Fire. Evander is a whiny little brat, and his attitude is annoying. Idra is my favourite, I like her straightforward approach, and Valerie is always the life of the party. Mordren keeps the sizzle going, and the sexy interludes break up the constant need to stay alive on a daily basis. A fun adventurous series that keeps you guessing

I cannot begin to tell you how much I enjoy this series.

There’s deception hidden around every corner. Just when you think you’ve got everything figured out Marion pulls the rug out from under you haha.

This book sees the further adventures of Kenna as she struggles to find a way to overcome this new power invading the land…I shall say no more for fear of spoilers!!!

Read this series!! You’ll love it!!!

Surprises every time!

I just found this author and my goodness! The first book or so I was mad reading until the end! Everytime you think somethings going to happen one way Kenna pulls through with another scheme and even fools me! Thats what I love about this series. The only thing its missing is the spicy scenes. How are you going to do such an amazing description of four play and then gloss over the good parts 😀 just my opinion though 😉 another great one

This series is seriously slept on, it's so good!

The plot in these books is brilliant and so well written. I love that Marion really leaves you hanging waiting till the end to give you all the details - it makes for a really great read that I always struggle to put down.

I love the characters and their relationships , there's just something about their wee family that I'm really rooting for. I hope they all get a happy ending!

Ready for book 6 please!

I read up till book 5. Felt like the story should have concluded there because each book is basically one scheme and it ran too long. I didn't feel like reading the rest of the books. World building and characters were very good. I liked how Valerie just knew what to saw to liven up the mood. It really was unique how a simple power of walking through walls was really expanded on.
