Gotham Creek, Maine is an insulated but fairly prosperous town. Hardly anyone is wealthy, but no one is hungry and there is no unemployment. All the houses are neat and cared for by the residents.

On the surface, one oddity is the nearby forest made up of several old growth oak trees, bigger than redwoods. The trees are owned by Doc Putnam, the unofficial town leader.

The children of the town don't think their lives are anything but normal, though Eddie Speers and his best friend Jess begin to discover not every town celebrates Embolic, Winter Solstice, Ostara, or Samhain.

I believe I like this book because of the author's openness about what is happening, there is no ham-handed attempts to keep the reader guessing about who the villians are or what evil lurks in the forest. Which is what bumped it from 2 to 3 stars.

Branches moving quickly,
slithering, like a serpents tongue.
Seeking out those who surpass,
trespass on these sacred grounds.
A price must be made to pacify,
satisfy the god of the forest.
Bark opening, hungering, grinding.
Struggling in vain, limbs like a vice.
Sap seeping, weeping,
like angry tears.
No longer thriving,
surviving.
Just dying.

I felt like this read went on past the expiration date and everything after that kind of soured the read. My attention went right out the window after a certain part. The writing was good.

I read this in draft and it's only got better. A great book, told with pace and rich in atmosphere and clever characterisation, this is very highly recommended.
