With invading aliens determined to confine humans to their planets, one thing is certain: the Aliens' force is technologically superior to the SAS, and even with the new Riss technology the clans have developed under Nadya Reese's supervision, the SAS cannot defeat them alone.
But forging an alliance between the SAS, UFN, and JPU will not be easy. It will require the empires to put aside their long history of border wars and mutual dislike. Worse, many in the SAS hate Riss-humans, especially Nadya. As a consequence, maintaining the Mutual Support Agreement between the Riss and the SAS is proving impossible. And then there is the issue of sharing technology with recent enemies, the question of leadership, and Nadya's involvement. The JPU only recently had bounties on Riss-humans, and Riss hides are prized in the UFN and JPU.
Nadya's not so sure the Alien's idea of confining the war-like humans to their planets isn't a good idea. But the fate of the Riss is tied to the humans, so whatever her doubts, she must act.
I was born and raised in Chicago, Illinois, and joined the military right out of high school. I served twenty-two years in the United States Air Force as a certified internal auditor. While in the military service, I lived in seven states and two foreign countries, and obtained two degrees: a BS in mathematics and an MS in computer science.
After I retired from the Air Force, I secured a position with Digital Equipment Corporation, located in Bedford, Massachusetts, as a software course developer and instructor. I worked twenty-two years at DEC and held positions as a course developer, course development manager, software engineer, and software engineering manager.
Today, I’m retired and live in Tucson, Arizona, with my wife of fifty-three years. My daughter and two grandchildren live in Maryland. I began writing several years after I retired, when I was seventy. My first two attempts remain in my desk drawer—good ideas, but poorly written. Subsequently, I co-authored, with Jeanne Tomlin, three fantasy novels: Talon of the Raptor Clan, Scales of Justice, and All My Friends Have Wings (young adults). Talon of the Raptor Clan was sold to ePress-online Books and came out in July 2009. Since then I have written two additional novels: The Laughing Hounds (urban fantasy) and The Riss Gamble (science fiction).
My hobbies for the past forty years have been kung fu and tai chi.
If I could give 5 stars for the plot, political machinations, the mind games, the Riss & Reese I would but things like the weird dialogue, over praising Reese, plot holes & sometimes weird writing reduce the enjoyment experience
I really enjoy the plot like ALOT but…
So that’s why I’m holding out on the rest. I think I’ll just read the rest of the series without rating bc I think much of the cons will be the same
Although there is no romance it seems Sean Bradshaw is the continued love interest or wtv he is, however I’m not a fan. He’s weird
This series continues to be an absolute joy to read. From the space battles to all the intrigue around the leaders and the hate and envy from the captains, a reflecti8n on our world of today? Jealousy, backstabbing, jockeying for positions, racism etc is an everyday occurance.
I'm enjoying this series. The plot moves along well. It is time for it to become less predictable so we will see what 5 holds in store. I like the very bright strong female lead. But there are a few things which don't ring true such as the deplorable lack of discipline which continues due to the intolerance of some of the humans though to a much lesser degree, in the SAS forces. Nonetheless an enjoyable read. A bit short and #4 was a bit long. They could have split the difference. Dawn's writes better with his collaborator on other works, Tomlin. I do appreciate his take on a strong female lead, which I consider impressive especially since he has had a military background.
