Cactus Creek #4

Love, Exes, and Ohs

Rate this book
He may very well be the perfect ex. Isaac McKnight has had enough loss in his life to know never to take anything for granted. So when the perfectly-imperfect-woman-for-him puts an end to their relationship out of the blue, it's Isaac that makes sure they remain friends. Now a year later, whether it's at his gym or her brewpub, or the dog park they visit every weekend--though neither of them own a dog--he and Xoey are steadily getting sucked deeper into buddy-zone galaxy, with its dangerous proximity to watch-me-settle-down-with-someone-else abyss. It's a reality he's resigned himself to. That is...until one drunken confession changes everything.

She's looking for the perfect oh. For Xoey Montenegro, history has taught her that sometimes, it's Prince Charming who vanishes without a trace. And fairytale love? Highly overrated. Heck, give her a real and perfect 'oh' over that fantasy any day. So as far as rock-solid tequila-fueled plans for her love life go, coming up with a match-finding formula based on the qualities of the men responsible for her three most epic ohs seems brilliant. Except for the fact that one-third of her genius little man-quation is all about her friend Isaac. Actually, more than a third if Xoey were being honest with herself--which she's not. Because full honesty would require thinking not just about how perfect Isaac really is, but also about how perfect the fourth epic oh she's kept buried deep in her past once was.

An easy enough thing to keep ignoring...until her past isn't past tense anymore.

I was browsing Amazon for new reads when I came across this book. The blurb totally caught my fancy with the first line - "He may very well be the perfect ex..." I was intrigued since it isn't often that I come across an ex boyfriend who turns best friend read. Actually this is the first such read and I can see myself reading more books of this theme in the future.

While the blurb made me fall for the story though it is a bit lengthy, the book cover wasn't much to pique my interest. It has a general romance read feel to it but it doesn't add anything special. The story doesn't suit the cover as far as I am concerned.

This is the first book I have read by the author and I am looking forward to her other books too. She has gone onto my list of To-Be-Read romance authors. The story starts off good with the present situation of Isaac and Xoey being best friends inspite of having broken up as a couple a while back. The backstory about their relationship is shown as the story progresses. The protagonists share a deep connection in this tale. Their emotions are clearly defined and they shine through each page.

Xoey is a free spirit with strength of character who deals with the world on her own terms but her vulnerable side is shown in short glimpses while Isaac is a patient and calm guy who perfectly complements Xoey. The other characters I encountered while reading totally made me fall for this series. This is the fourth book and I can't wait to pick up the first book. The supporting cast is colourful and unique in their own rights adding the right vibe to the tale.

Since the author made it clear that Xoey and Isaac are destined for each other, it didn't have much twists to the plot except a couple. The first one was kind of anticipated while the second blindsided me completely but it does connect the threads of the story seamlessly. I read this book in half a day and the layers of the story kept me invested in the characters, the town and the story.

Though it is a fun read it has an emotional tone to it which makes it a not so frivolous read. I read it purely to know about the struggles Isaac and Xoey go through to get to their happily ever after inspite of knowing the ending. In short, it is a great book to connect with the characters and I was lost in them. I can recommend this book to all romance readers out there without any hesitation.

My rating : 4.5/5

My reread factor : 4/5

My one line review : A emotional romance with strong and real characters in a delightful scenario.

I don’t know if Violet Duke can give us a perfect ‘OH’ than the story of Isaac and Xoey. Her Cactus Creek series is a romantic cauldron of some amazing characters, lovable, warm, just plain perfect with imperfections. They grow on you, they tempt you with chocolate and beer, they protect you with their might, they support you unconditionally and they give the readers the perfect Ohs!!!!

Xoey Montenegro and Isaac McKnight have a long history between them before they decided to remain best friends. They talk every night, they have breakfast together everyday, they talk about their misfit dates, analyze every single thing under the sky, except talk about the feelings they have for each other. It’s perfectly clear to Isaac that Xoey is ‘the woman’ for him, whereas Xoey has a history that holds her back from accepting Mr. Wrong as her Mr. Right.

“Loves, Exes And Ohs” is just not another sweet romance with a happy ending. It is loaded with emotions and pain, love and friendship, and a history with a twist that would rock our hearts, yet at the same time leaves us feeling warm and fuzzy.

Xoey is a darling with a heart of gold and everyone just loves her. Strong and resilient, she is open with her feelings and kindness. Smart, sassy and beautiful inside out, she has a past that she needs to reconcile with before she can give herself completely to Isaac.

And Isaac the perfect Oh for Xoey is the perfect complement to her wit and charm. Supported by his good friends including the new ‘dwarfs’ who have made a home in Cactus Creek and have appointed themselves as Xoey’s unrelated siblings, Isaac has the daunting task of convincing Xoey that he is her Mr. Right forever, despite the past that connects him with Xoey.

Violet Duke as always is one of the most charming writers I’ve come across. Her penchant for narrating stories that tug at your heart, creating characters that you can absolutely relate on a daily basis, and the moments of tender emotions that ties your heart into knots, I can guarantee will make her one of your favorite to go writers.

Be it with her witty dialogues, the warm and friendly conversations, or the unsuspecting twists she weaves into her story, you will always end up with the biggest ‘OH’!!!!

This is the 4th book in a series, but can be read as a standalone.

Xoey's had some hard times, but she's worked hard and now serves as the part-owner of Ocotillo's, a brewpub she manages with the other owner, and her good friend, Dani. Xoey wants to find Mr. Right, and has searched for him for the past decade--ever since her first Mr. Wrong, a one-night stand who left Xoey considerably worse for the wear.

Isaac is Xoey's ex. She's collected a lot of them on her search for Mr. Right, yet Isaac's the only one who's stuck around to be a friend, too. In fact, he's a very close friend to Xoey, and he'd like to be more.

They share a lot of close times, but no physicality ever since Xoey broke it off. She's got some pretty romantic ideas about Mr. Right, and Isaac just missed the mark. Still, over the course of the year he's been a great friend and confidante, and she's attracted to him. Now, however, she doesn't want to risk their friendship. So all her girlfriends make a plan to set her up with potential Mr. Right blind dates--and they sorta sabotage them....so Xoey can see that the best man in her life is the man who's been the caretaker of her heart: Isaac.

Trouble erupts unexpectedly, however, and Xoey becomes the temporary guardian of a child she never intended to care for--with Isaac right by her side. They make a great team, until Isaac gets a wake-up call, and Xoey breaks it all off, again.

This is a fun contemporary friends-to-lovers story with a twist I didn't see coming--probably because it bent the line of coincidence way out of proportion. Excepting that, however, I liked it. Somewhat breezy, and a quick read. A bit of a steamer, too.

This has got to be my favorite Violet Duke book so far. And I really like her books.

This is Xoey Montenegro's book & I have been really looking forward to getting to know more of the flippant, snarky, creative bartender/co-owner of Ocotillo's Brew Pub. And I can honestly say I am even more enamored of her than I already was. Xoey is looking for her Mr. Right & one evening after a few too many shots of tequila she comes up with a man-quation. This consists of all the best qualities from the three OH's she has dated in her life. OMG, so funny. Especially since more than 1/3 of the list are qualities from her best friend & most recent OH, Isaac McKnight.

When Xoey broke things off with Isaac he decided that he was not willing to let the woman of his dreams disappear from his life. He embarked on a campaign to become her best friend. And he succeeded. Now, several years later (and one man-quation) he has decided that it's time to show Xoey that he is her Prince Charming and they never should have broken up. The ensuing 'dates' are hilarious. On top of that there are several REALLY surprising twists & turns that were completely unforeseen. But OMG, so worthy of the story.

There are a number of 1 star reviews that had absolutely NOTHING to do with this story & EVERYTHING to do with some pre-order issues. Those issues have since been taken care of. I HIGHLY recommend this book if you want to laugh & love a really great story.

I have loved each one of the Cactus Creek stories so far and let me tell you... THIS one- Oh-MY! This one revolves around Xoey and Isaac, from their old relationship together, to becoming exes turned best friends. I liked Xoey's character as a supporting character and am delighted to get to know her more.. AS well as Isaac..Because let's face it , he would make a good BBF for anyone- strong yet gentle.. YUM! The thing is they both still have reservations about being anything more than friends. And when Xoey sets out to find Mr. Right, will Isaac be left to pick up the pieces.. Or will he lose her forever? There are some BIG twists in this one and I walked right into the wall! I never seen it coming- The one thing I love about this series is how the characters lives inter-twine and the relationships they have are genuine. It really helps bring the town to life. You definitely get the small town feel between the gossiping, and meddling- they always do it in good nature though lol. All in all the pace was great. The story line was full of suspense, mystery and romance.

Really loved this story! When Xoey comes up with a drunken perfect man list it becomes apparent that Issac is just that her perfect man and no matter how many men she dates, no one compares. Now if he can just convince her to give him a second chance! This book is filled with wonderful surprises and crazy twists as Xoey and Issac find their way to their HEA. I highly recommend this one!

I love Violet Duke and I've read all her books. I love the Cactus Creek series and I have been waiting for Xoey's story since book 1 and it was worth the wait. Xoey and Isaac used to date, but now they are just friends. Friends who see each other every day and talk on the phone all the time. Isaac wants Xoey back but he has no idea how he will convince her. Lucky for him, she gets drunk one night and comes up with a plan to find Mr. Right, who will need to have all the qualities of the only men who have given her the Big Oh in the past. Isaac is of course on the list, along with almost all of his great qualities. Love is literally staring her in the face, but she refuses to see it. After a little help from her friends, Isaac inserts himself has Bachelor #5 and gets the date he's been dreaming about for a year. Their chemistry is off the charts and their banter awesome! When the past threatens to end their new found relationship, can Isaac convince Xoey to take a chance on him? The twists and turns had me crying and threatening to call Violet if it didn't end well! :) Do not miss this one!

The woman basically had remote control access to most of his body parts - brain, heart, and …yeah. All his body parts.

The way he was looking at her made her feel like she was wearing nothing more than a prayer and a whisper.

This is the fourth book of the Cactus Creek series by Violet Duke. Just like all the others, it can be read as a stand-alone, but you’ll appreciate it more knowing the characters and their backgrounds as they all run in and out of one another’s stories. You’ll also fall in love with the quirky little town of Cactus Creek, the strangest little town you’ll ever find. This is the tale of Xoey and Isaac.

Xoey has been looking for Mr Right and finding nothing but a lot of Mr Wrongs. So, during one night of drunken logic, decides she needs to combine her three top exes, the ones who have given her the best ohs, and she’ll come up with her exact Mr Right. What could go wrong?

Isaac has been convinced that Xoey is the one for a couple of years. He’s one of her exes, her best ex actually. But he’s been put in the friend zone for the last year and he’s getting tired of it. He’s about to launch a plan to come out of the zone…… What could go wrong?

Shew! There was quite a bit in this one that I didn’t see coming. It was interesting and entertaining to watch Xoey’s and Isaac’s stories unfold. This has been a great series to start off my summer reading with.

Only in books can this happen.

It is time for Xoey & Isaac’s story, which we were all dying to read. And what a whopper it is. Violet Duke has a great imagination because what are the chances of the events that happen in this story to correlate to real life. A really mere happenstance.

Eh. Despite all the people saying this can be read as a standalone, I don't recommend it. There were a lot of characters thrown at you with little explanation as to who exactly they were. I assume everyone was introduced in a previous book.

Anyway there were some cute moments and some cringey moments. Overall it was decent and the kind of light romance I was looking for.

I liked the premise of this book -- it was an interesting combination of second chance and friends to lovers. It would have been 5 stars except for the 2nd twist, which was just too unbelievable for me.

Love, Exes and Ohs was such a great read! I am so glad I took a chance on this new to me author. This definitely won't be the last of her books I read, especially if they are all as good as this one was.

Xoey and Isaac are best friends. They talk all the time, the meet up for breakfast every week at the dog park, they are just perfect together. Only Xoey doesn't want to be more than friends. She dated Isaac in the past then broke up with him for no reason he can figure out. That didn't stop him from making sure that they stay friends. He loves her and wants to be with her in whatever capacity she is willing. Maybe one day she will realize how amazing they are together and he will get his happily ever after. For now though he is just there for her whenever she needs him and he takes his frustrations out at his gym. When she goes on dates he hits the bags. It works for now.

Xoey really cares for Isaac. She loves him, she just doesn't believe in the happily ever after. Though it is getting harder to keep things in the friend zone with Isaac. He is always there for her and it is just so sweet. One drunken night she decides she is not going to look for love anymore, but someone to give her a great oh. She makes a list of qualities the men must have based on the three men who have given her great oh's on the past. Only Isaac makes up most of the list.

This was a great story and Isaac and Xoey are so cute together! Watching them fall for each other and work everything out was just amazing. I just loved them so much. Xoey has been burned in the past and she is having a hard time letting that go. When the past comes into the present I thought oh no. This is what is happening? Oh this is going to be lame drama llama. Only it wasn't. The author dealt with the situation the characters find themselves in in such a refreshing way. Not a lot of drama. Not a lot of unnecessary heartbreak. It is like Xoey and Isaac are adults and handle what comes at them in a more grown up way. Instead of being all crazy emotional they work through things. Sure it took some time to get to happily ever after, but the way the author handled everything I loved. There were a lot of times when it could have been really cheesy, or cringe worthy, but the author didn't go there. It was amazing. I loved it. Most other authors wouldn't have written the story this well. I definitely need to go read more as the way she handled everything was just perfect. I loved the characters, I loved the story, I just loved this book! A great read, highly recommended. It was a lot of fun, so cute and sweet and just amazing. I'm so glad I gave this book a try.

As we returned to Cactus Creek for this next installment, we embarked on Xoey Montenegro and Isaac McKnight's journey to see if the best friends could move from back from the "friend zone" to having a romantic relationship. The two had been best friends for a year, but during that time they did date, but as they grew closer, events from Xoey's past caused her to end the relationship even though there were many unresolved feelings and that was true for Isaac as well.

Determined to find her "Mr. Right" Xoey hatches a plan to take all of the good qualities of the men who were able to bring her pleasure in bed. Each of her girlfriends is responsible for setting up a blind date, much to their chagrin. Each time Xoey would go on a date, Isaac would hold his breath in hopes that she hadn't met that person that she was going to marry. When Xoey determines that her plan isn't working, she and Isaac decide to try the "friends with benefits" route.

With strong feelings flowing between them, the two are reconnecting and enjoying their time together. When a friend of Xoey's is in a car accident, things in her life suddenly change and Issac is right there by her side to support her. As things begin to unfold with the situation they are dealing with, old memories surface for both of them. Will they be able to get over their previous heartaches and come together or will the ghosts from the past drive them apart?

I just have to say that I adore Violet Duke both as an author and as a person. She's fantastic and her work is just the same. This book gives us humor, heartbreak, friendship and a love that stands the test of many different obstacles. I'd highly recommend not only this book, but all of the Cactus Creek series!

Love, Exes and Ohs is the fourth book in the Cactus Creek Series by Violet Duke. Though it is written as a stand alone, I would highly recommend reading the other books in this series because there are many connections and continuing storylines from the other books in this series. Also if you have read Violet's Can't resist series, you will be delighted to see some crossover connections as well.

In this story, you meet Isaac McKnight and Xoey Montenegro in further depth. Out of the blue, Xoey broke up with Isaac after dating for about six months. Isaac has no idea why, but for some reason he can not let her go; therefore, he was determined to keep their friendship in tack no matter the costs. Especially, now a year later when she has decided to try daring again.

Xoey has the bigger than life personality, is part owner of Ocotillos (a local brew pub, and the best friend to Isaac. She is searching for Mr. Wright so much that her friends have even begun to set her up on blind dates, but none can meet her expectations. She has not dated many people seriously in her life, and only a few have made it past a few dates. One evening her friends finally ask her to list the qualities she is looking for. Even though the majority of the list consists of Isaac's good traits, she is determined to find the perfect man for her.

Violet Duke has written a beautiful story in this book. She has woven many story lines across multiple books as well as series to make this story flow as it does. I will definitely be reading more from this series!

Loved the premise, loved the characters, but this book fell flat. The first half was boring and slow - overly descriptive of things that weren't relevant to the story, I felt myself skimming over entire pages just to get through it. The second half picked up and was much more interesting, but I had trouble believing in what I was reading and never fully bought into it. 2.5/5 stars

This is Xoey Montenegro and Isaac McKnight's story. I have been waiting for Xoey's story since she first appeared in Love, Chocolate and Beer. This can be read as a stand alone but it's more fun if you know the characters. Xoey and Isaac were dating previously but when they broke up the remained best friends. With one little problem, Isaac is still in love with Xoey. Xoey has been through a lot in her life and she needs to overcome her past before she can be happy with Isaac. There is a major plot twist in this story that I did not see coming. I won't give it away because I think not knowing made it more powerful and emotional. Violet does a good job of making us care about these characters and I love visiting the older characters and seeing what is going on in their lives. I like how she introduced Jackson, Bennett and Donovan and can't wait for their stories! I loved how Isaac described Xoey. "As the Xoey-whisperer, he'd spent a good portion of this past year laughing, and the rest of it with a perpetual hard-on. Because the woman was as hilarious as she was sexy. In a smart-ass-always-packing-with-a-wickedly-racy-joke sort of way. I loved this quote to Issac from Dani. "Not at all. You're better than a prince. Demigods are practically immortal. And I truly believe you'll outlive all these guys she's dating." I would definitely recommend this book.
