Lily Brody is an all around sweet yet feisty girl from Sweet Springs, Texas in 1880. She goes to church, lives and breathes her faith and also has a huge attraction to the handsomest man in Texas, Tyler Kincaide. Tyler is a widower, who lost his wife in a tragic accident, and needs help raising his rambunctious daughter. He is charming and thinks Lily will be the perfect match so he proposes she come and live with them. Lily refuses not only because it would be highly improper but also because she wants love – true love – and she knows that’s something Tyler can’t afford to give. Eventually Lily finds herself going against her better judgement and proper etiquette to live with Tyler and Bethann due to a family situation. Feelings bloom between Tyler and Lily and a family begins to form as an unseen threat lurks not far behind.

I loved Lily Gets Her Man so much I finished it in a weekend! Lily Brody is not a damsel in distress waiting for her cowboy. She has smarts, convictions she sticks to and agency, all of which are always welcome in a lead heroine. Tyler was a great match for Lily from her correcting his foul-mouth speech to him exploring the possibility of loving again. Reading this book made me realize how well written the harlequin genre is because the characters, especially the women, truly have to stand alone to get the plot moving through the romance. There was also a thriller element to the story that was a fun subplot to keep the reader guessing! Charlene Sands has a wonderful writing style that keeps your heart racing and completely invested in her characters. While I enjoyed reading Lily Gets Her Man this was a 3 star story and was a great palate cleanser after the previous books I read. I would recommend this book to anyone who needs a quick beach read, a heartwarming love story with a punch or someone looking to get into western-harlequins.

On a separate note, I’ve battled myself about this but I’d like to provide a slight trigger warning. There is a scene early on where minor violence against women is foreshadowed and later occurs as a plot device. It is not graphic by any means but was a surprise to me. However, now that I’ve read more western-harlequin novels it seems like a staple plot device – I just wished I had a heads up.
