Darren didn’t mind college. If it wasn’t for his lack of friends, and a girlfriend who would rather party her semester away than see his face, he might even call it a good experience. But his education was interrupted when he found the tunnel hidden below the library, because what was down there was something that could destroy everything he knew. And when Audrey steps into his life and into the tunnel with him, life would never be the same again.

Darren isn't making many friend at college. His new lab partner is a jerk and his girlfriend spends more time partying than she does with him.
At a study session at the library Darren and Troy, his lab partner, stumble across a hidden hatch. Troy is determined to explore this new-found place and Darren is just as determined not to get into trouble having only been at college for a month.
Darren leaves Troy to his own devices, but Troy never shows up for class the next day, and soon after that his stuff is being cleared out of his dorm.
Darren knows something is up. Audrey, a girl he meets, and Jake, his roommate, decide to investigate this incident a little more, but what they find is more dangerous than anyone could have thought.

This read instantly grabbed my attention and I was pulled along as Troy's disappearance was swept under the rug. However, the more I read, the more I started to notice little things that took away from the story.

The writing was solid until I got halfway through the read and nothing new had happened and nothing was resolved. Sentences were repeated and the dialogue was just too much. I really think this read dragged on and it could have been significantly shortened to add more impact. The pacing was off and the story needed more plot twists and action. There was no forward movement.

I also found the Darren and cast to be a tad dramatic. I know they are college kids, but sometimes it seemed like they were freshmen at high school. Darren irritatingly used his race as a reason for his not having friends and a excuse at times. He always wanted to learn more of the hidden passage, but at the same time he was too chicken to follow through and everyone around him seemed to be doing all the work.

This read had a lot of potential and the idea behind it was a really good one. If the author shortened it, added some twists and turns, and corrected the repetitiveness, I could definitely see this read as a winner.

Good Story, but Needs an Editor...

The story of the Void contains extraneous scenes, information and characters. At over 600 pages, it could easily be brought to half that if it was tightened up.

The premise is a good one, even if we never understand why the villains gain from bad things happening. The protagonists, Darren and Audrey are created well, and I followed their every move through the novel. The rest of the cast of characters are rather flat, even Jack, Darren's roommate, who works with our H/H to solve the mystery.

While I am not a grammar zealot, I will warn those that are, you will find homophones, missing words, the to/too issue, extra words and so on. It started bothering me, and I am usually very tolerant. D. Haltinner, invest in a real editor and your story is likely to be fabulous, as well as more focused, especially if you spend a bit more time on character development and the ending, and less on sweating ( mentioned way too many times ). Just my opinion, take it, or leave it.

The ending was rushed and heavily foreshadowed. I don't know how many times, but so many, I felt battered. When it finally occurs there is no surprise or emotion, just an ' of course ' feeling, as the whole thing felt inevitable. I would have loved to know more about the history, what happened in '44, or the nature of that thing. Even the meaning behind Jack's password, as he didn't act like he knew anything. Ah the mystery!

Bottom Line: Inside here was a compelling story with two great protagonists. The author has obvious talent, just needs an Editor.

I did enjoy a lot of this novel. I really liked the idea, it was really great. I did not see the end of this book happening. I actually did not foresee a lot of things, but that was definitely a good thing. There were a few things I wasn't so okay with. There were A LOT of spelling errors, or words where they didn't belong. It took all I had not to mark up the book. By Darren never telling Audrey the truth about Rachel, it shows the readers, who are more than likely going to be young, that it's okay to cheat on your significant other. The way the characters were written out made it seem like they were in high school instead of college. They just seemed like they weren't really mature enough. However I really loved all of the different things that kept happening. They were all so unexpected and I quite liked being shocked as I kept turning the pages. If you do write a sequel to this, I would like to read it. I really would like to know what will happen to the creature, and what happens to Darren as well. All in all, it was a good read, it just had some minor flaws.

It was an okay story, good for when you just want to kill time, I even got caught up in some of it. BUT I found myself skipping pages that had entirely too much detail and too many side stories popping in. There are a lot of misspelled words, which doesn't really bother me, but it does for others. If you take a chance on this, just know you may be skipping pages as well.
