When their parents fail to return from a foraging expedition, a little mouse must care for himself and his baby sister.
My siblings and I all loved this book, and so did all the kids to whom I read it while babysitting. One little girl, who had minimal exposure to fiction, was really white-knuckling through the suspense. I'm not laughing at her for that! I think it is an interesting example of how early we are trained by literary norms to expect certain outcomes. And the book does contain stressful, realistic elements that I think would be unusual in a more recent publication.
This was one of my two favorite books at the age of 3 or 4. I always thought it was called "Mouse House," but it was definitely this one. Timmy is the hero, saving his family. Who knows what deep significance that held for me at 3.
