Summary: “Caterpillar to Butterfly” is about the life cycle of a butterfly. Each page goes through the life cycle of a caterpillar and the metamorphic process. After it goes through the life cycle, the book talks about what a caterpillar eats and how it grows bigger to form into a butterfly. The story ends with the new butterfly laying eggs on a leaf. The life cycle starts over.
Evaluation: In this book, the author describes each stage a caterpillar goes through in order to become a butterfly. The author makes the explanations simple and kid friendly. The sentences are simple and easily to read. There are some vocabulary words in the story students will need help pronouncing and defining, but they could read the book independently besides the few words.
Teaching Tip: Because this book talks about the life cycle of the butterfly, I will use it as part of my animal life cycle lesson. There are a few other books about animals and their life cycles, which I would use as well. I would use this book to model my understand of an animal’s life cycle, and I would show my students how I would draw out eat stage and explain it. Then, I would group students together and let them choose an animal. After they do this, I will tell them that it is there job to investigate the animal and map out its life cycle. Once the groups have completed this, I would let them present their life cycles to the rest of the class. We would have a discussion about why life cycles are important to understand.
This is a nonfiction picture book about the process of caterpillars becoming butterflies. I thought this book did a very good job of making it very simple so that even preschoolers can pay attention to it and understand it. If you are going to use this book in a classroom, maybe actually show the class the actual process. In a couple of the classes I observed this semester, they had their own butterflies that were in cocoons in a butterfly cage. I would do this to go along with this book so they are invested in THEIR butterflies and they can get attached to them and watch them grow.

De oruga a mariposa/Caterpillar to Butterfly is an excellent book for preschool age children to learn about the lifecycle of butterflies. The pictures show the entire lifecycle and in simple text explains each of the four steps in a butterfly's development. My copy is bi-lingual Spanish/English and we often read it in either language in our preschool room.
