mostly just skimmed some of the passages on korea (koseki laws were crazy!!) due to time constraints; really want to go back and read this whole thing more carefully someday. (someday.......)

edit: and now, apparently, is that day. going to chip away at this slowly, i think. will probably build up some major arm muscles in the process, haha. (this thing runs to 782 pages in hardback!)

edit 2: FINISHED. an extremely rewarding book through and through, but i don't think it's necessary to read it from cover to cover unless you are very, very invested in japanese imperialism issues. for the skimmers out there, though, definitely recommend reading at least the intro and conclusion carefully, as they present his major arguments in very clear and succinct terms.
