It was very entertaining and a nice way to pass the time. I love reading zombie books. The last section of the book actually had some useful survival tips.

INITIAL THOUGHTS
I only got into the whole "zombie" genre around the middle of this year so there's lots for me to read and catch up with. Approaching this book, I expect it to be humorous, though I'm unsure what format the book will take. Will it be lists of rules? or In a kind of diary with scenarios and rules?

MY REVIEW
I received this book directly from the Author via publicist Maria Barry. The cover is definitely eye catching with its right yellow. The book also has a gory feel to it with all the blood splatters featured on the book too. I think using the yellow which looks very much like the hazardous colour symbols is an excellent idea. So would the cover make me pick it up in a book store? Yes I would be attracted enough to pick up the book.
So the book is basically what it say's on the cover A Zombie Survival Rule Book. It's basically a tongue in cheek, yet highly practical list of tips and rules and advice to follow in the event that there ever is a zombie apocalypse. There's survival advice on what you should keep in your "bug-out" bag such as fairly obvious things like a supply of tinned food, a first aid kit and perhaps things you may not think of like those foil sheets that are placed around marathon runners shoulders to keep heat in etc.
I admit to being slightly disappointed as I expected more too the book. I wanted more scenarios, perhaps with characters. I kind of wanted this "handbook" to be part of a post apocalyptic series. I think it may have worked better as part of a series, as I feel as a standalone "handbook" it remains a bit stilted and maybe even a little odd. It does have some small bits of humour, but not as much as could have been incorporated. As part of a series the rules could have been referenced to the individual characters like "things could have been so different if Jane had used her knife instead of her gun etc etc."
I can't really say anymore about the book without just revealing some of the rules therefore spoiling the book.
So did I enjoy the book? Yes but I felt it could have been so much more. Would I recommend the book? Yes, but I feel I would have to point out that it is literally a Rule Book. Would I read other books by Tony Newton? Yes especially if they were apocalyptic novels!

In the beginning I was very excited about this book, around midway that feeling fell flat. The rules in the book became repetitive but still expressing the same idea. If the rules were expanded with more detail and a little more humor there is a huge potential for this book.

It is still a great collectors item for the horror and zombie lovers alike....Jen

A nice zombie survival manual but lacks the refinement of substance. Too much jumping between the subjects and too similar to each other. I rather have read this in some form of categorized chapters. A quick read with some interesting new stuff for surviving an upcoming zombie apocalypse.

The Zombie Rule Book: A Zombie Apocalypse Survival Guide by Tony Newton is a fun, fast-paced, and surprisingly practical read that blends entertainment with survival-minded thinking. While framed around the fictional concept of a zombie apocalypse, the book delivers lessons that extend far beyond the undead. At its core, this guide encourages preparedness, situational awareness, and mental discipline, skills that are valuable in any emergency scenario.

One of the book’s greatest strengths is its concise, rule-based format. The tips are easy to digest, memorable, and ideal for quick reference, which makes it perfect for its intended purpose as a “bug-out bag” companion. Newton writes with clarity and confidence, motivating readers to think ahead, plan smarter, and train consistently. The tone is empowering rather than alarmist, reinforcing the idea that survival is as much about mindset as it is about tools.

What makes this book especially enjoyable is its balance of realism and creativity. It never takes itself too seriously, yet it presents ideas in a way that makes readers reflect on their own level of preparedness. Whether discussing mobility, awareness, or resource management, the advice feels grounded and adaptable.

This book is ideal for zombie enthusiasts, survival hobbyists, or anyone who enjoys post-apocalyptic scenarios with a practical twist. The Zombie Rule Book is entertaining, motivating, and thought-provoking, a compact guide that reminds readers that preparation today can make all the difference tomorrow.

This got old very quickly.

Some of the rules were near identical (for example: Rule 18 and rule 182 say essentially the same thing
Similar about shoes: wear sneakers, wear combat boots and don't wear high heels get separate rules).

There were a couple snarky humorous rules, but I expected a bit more comedy from this. A lot of the tips/rules were just regular old survival rules.

And the format and breakdown of the book was odd. A list of rules and then a section called Handy Tips. But many of the "handy tips" could easily have just been stuffed into the rules section and some were just more in depth versions of the rules.

There are more entertaining zombie survival guides out there. Go read one of those.

“In The Zombie Rule Book, Tony Newton has prepared not only an excellent resource for survival in the event that the dead should ever arise to eat the flesh of the living, but also a valuable guide to life in general. Aside from the standard fare of how to not be eaten and survive, this book also stresses positive habits for healthy physical and mental health that we could all use in our day-to-day pre-zombie apocalypse lives. Fun and functional, Newton’s work covers many topics and situations that all zombie fans have thought about, approaching them in a serious and well-thought-out manner. This is one book that will definitely be in my bug out bag.” Mike Gagnon, Author and Illustrator – www.mikegagnon.ca

This book is somewhere between totally funny and dead serious. This is a book I won here on Goodreads. I never would have thought to buy this book. But I found it Interesting, entertaining, thought provoking and a true study for a serious survivalist at times (even they have to laugh).

I especially liked the list of useful/hurtful herbs and plants in the back. A fun book to read. I feel much more prepared for a zombie apocalypse.

Actually a 3.5 only because I liked it but I probably won't read it again. It was fun and interesting, especially the end part where the author talked about different plants that were helpful.

Let's be real here:

I was really excited about reading this book. I had everything downloaded from my library to be able to do so while standing in the hot Disney World lines, ready to be taken into the world of zombies while maneuvering past the hordes of people just walking about, ready to escape from the reality of my feet hurting and my throat feeling vaguely dry from dehydration.

God, I wish I had chosen another book.

I was painfully aware of every tip and of every page, waiting for the moment when the rule book would finally get interesting. I actually scoffed when I saw this book's attempts at making a few jokes here and there.

If in a zombie apocalypse at Disney World, then I would have been screwed over. Not only from the fact that I would have been so close to infected humans all the time, but also from the fact that the tips are so difficult to navigate. "What's that section on rehydration? Was it tip #20, tip #47, or tip #161 AHHH NO, MY FACE IS BEING EATEN. AHHHH." Without proper organizing and sections laid out, I would properly have to organize the book myself, taking precious time away from finding shelter and... y'know, following the rules of the book.

The tips are overly repetitive. I'd read one text, get forward about ten pages, then go, "hmm, that sounds too familiar." Normally, I'd recommend piecing this book off into sections, however I think that would just end up condensing the repetitiveness instead of actually doing anything good in the terms of accessibility.

I'm only giving this 2/5 stars, since the writing wasn't... bad, just boring. I don't mind boring all of the time and I can typically get through it. But dang, how can a rule book for a zombie apocalypse manage to be so dull that I instead spent my day at Disney on reddit and Facebook?
