Science-just add salt would be a great book for kids. It has tons of different little experiments that would be easy and safe to do at home. But also the ingredients that they call for are all common kitchen items. Another great thing is that it mixes information into the experiments, and is good at informing kids about different things. When I have my own kids, I look forward to making some more Salt Dough with them.
