Cheating on this selection. As I am directing this musical for my community theater group and reading the script multiple times, this entry is the closest I could find that would allow me to give credit to reading the script and let me know in the future as I look back what I meant by it
Sophie is about to get married to Sky and have a happily ever after. After finding her mother’s diary she sends invitations to her three possible fathers in the hopes of figure out which one is the one. To the mother’s surprise three old love interest enter the picture. Plenty of forced characters, drama, and abba music later and all men take a third ownership of fatherhood. That’s right, all three men agree to be 1/3 the daddy. I have a 1/3 liking to this musical.
Some scripts demand viewership on the stage because they don't hold up on their own, but this script surely isn't one of them. The book is hilarious, witty, and touching for a show that exists only to complement ABBA's renowned music! There are so many ways the script can be interpreted: with a kooky, lighthearted feel; a provocative, sensual feel; a heartwarming, dramatic feel, etc. That can only be achieved through an excellent script, which the director or actor can spin into their interpretation. Benny Andersson mixes in ABBA's greatest hits so well that you can barely tell that they were written before the musical was conceived. Honestly, what drags the production down at times is the length of the songs.
Super songs from ABBA compiled into one volume. The arrangements are accessible for the average pianist - medium difficulty level. I just saw for the second time the stage musical, and it was better this time around now that I have the score to refer back to post- and pre-performance.
