I have been a fan of the Star Trek Corp of Engineers since they were first mentioned in Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan. This series have been amazing and this book was no exception. But beyond the short story and the cool tech ideas, there is a element of continuity within this book. We are approaching the 50th Year of Star Trek, an unbroken line of modern mythology. This leads to a history within that mythology. In this book a character from an earlier SCE novel joins the crew, which echoes the tradition within the Star Trek cannon. From Worf joining DS9 to Q becoming infatuated with Janeway and beyond to Spock Prime helping the new crew of the old Enterprise. I guess I am getting old when these thing become important to me - but on the other hand, like David Gold in the story I am finding new Trek fans and friends in my old age. Guess this was just the right book at the right time for me.
