The Weatherby Wallflowers received their unfortunate nickname when Rupert Dupree, younger brother of the Earl of Rottenbury, jilted Clarissa on the eve of their wedding, then decamped for the Continent. When a gossip sheet published Rupert’s letter forcefully refusing the bride his father had chosen for him, all four Weatherby sisters became laughingstocks. Clarissa hadn’t much been looking forward to marrying a stranger, but she has hated ‘Rotten Rupert’ ever since.
But you can’t keep a Weatherby Wallflower down…
Any Weatherby girl worth her salt knows how to turn the lemons life hurls at you into delicious lemon tarts. Now the consummate wallflower, Clarissa finds her true gathering information for the Foreign Office. It’s the one advantage of blending into the wallpaper—nobody even notices that Clarissa is in the room, much less that she is surreptitiously listening to everyone’s secrets.
Snowbound with the Scoundrel…
Clarissa’s contact at the Foreign Office gives her the most important assignment of her to infiltrate the Countess of Helmsley’s Christmas house party and discover who has been passing secrets to the enemy. Nothing will stop Clarissa from reaching this house party, not even the snowstorm gathering over the Yorkshire moors. She manages to book passage on the last carriage leaving York.
But that’s when Clarissa’s luck runs out. Because it turns out there’s one other passenger crazy enough to brave the moors in a blizzard.
And it happens to be Rupert Dupree…
Snowbound with the Scoundrel is a steamy, comedic Regency Romance. It is Book 37 in the multi-author series Revenge of the Wallflowers and also Book 2 in The Weatherby Wallflowers Quartet. Look for Eleanor Weatherby’s story, A Wallflower Never Surrenders, and for Kate and Pippa’s stories, which are coming in 2025!
After reading Black Beauty for the 1,497th time, Courtney McCaskill was inspired to write her own stories. Reviews of her early work were mixed, with her fourth-grade teacher, Ms. Compton, saying, “Please stop writing all of your assignments from the point of view of a horse.”
Today, Courtney lives in Austin, Texas with the hero of her own story, who holds the distinction of being the world’s most sarcastic pediatrician. She is reliably informed by her six-year-old son that she gives THE BEST hugs, “because you’re so squishy, Mommy.” When she’s not busy almost burning down her house attempting to make a traditional Christmas pudding, she enjoys playing the piano, learning everything there is to know about Kodiak bears, and of course, curling up with a great book! Yet another fabulous addition to the Revenge of the Wallflowers series, Snowbound with the Scoundrel is the second story in the Weatherby Wallflowers quartet by Courtney McCaskill, featuring Clarissa Weatherby and her much-maligned, former fiancé, Rotten Rupert Dupree. Unbeknownst to them, they are both working for the Home Office and have been sent on a joint mission to Helmsley Castle in Yorkshire to protect MP Oliver Baxter and to find out who wants him eliminated, once and for all. But as the two spend time together, Clarissa finds that Rupert is not at all the man she assumed he was, nor could he have brought such ridicule and disdain from the ton down on her and her sisters by writing the poison-pen letter to the newspapers around the time of their broken betrothal. Rupert, who is kind, charming and good-hearted, albeit a bit dull-witted - in his own and others' eyes - is determined to make things right for Clarissa and her sisters, all the while becoming ever more convinced that Clever "Claire" (his nickname for her) is indeed the woman he's always wanted to marry.
Mixed in with their steamy romance is a bit of a fun caper, although I did figure out who the culprit was quite early on - indeed, almost as soon as they opened their mouths - and the why of it. I also wanted Rupert to grow a little bit more throughout the story in the development of his own self-confidence. He was still quite self-disparaging close to the end, but he was an absolute cinnamon roll of a hero and a good man. More than worthy of Clarissa Weatherby!
An added bonus to the story was being able to catch up with Clarissa's sisters - Pippa, Kate and Eleanor, with her impressive Duke of Norwood husband, Jasper, in tow. Additionally, I loved that Rupert was embraced not only by Clarissa and her sisters, but by Jasper as well - which was a most welcome instance of found family for Rupert.
All in all, this was a really enjoyable romp with characters who become even more well-loved, the more we read about them. Now, to see what's in store for Kate (Book 3), and whether Felix will be able to make amends with Pippa (Book 4). I can't wait to see all the Weatherby Wallflowers get their much-deserved happy endings!
I received an ARC from the author, and I am leaving my honest review voluntarily.
If ‘rotten’ is your take on Rupert, than this entire story was absolutely Rotten! And by that, I of course mean an utter delight. Full of joy, a blundering adorableness and the single sweetest hero on the planet. Rupert was the very best surprise after being introduced to a certain perception of him from the past. How quickly Clarissa came to see her own blunder in that mistaken (but understandable) perception was to be expected, for who could possibly dislike this genuine and authentic man after meeting him. I truly enjoyed the playfulness that this story embraced. After year of being on the sidelines, it was fabulous to see Claire shine and gain her own confidence in the process. There was always more to her than a snarky, jaded miss in brown. Courtney wrote this story with such great flow, and the ideal mix of humour, love and mystery. The Weatherby Wallflowers are destined to shatter that misguided stereotype in rapid succession and I for one, can't wait.
Thanks to the author for an ARC of this book, second in The Weatherly Wallflowers series. Clarissa, defamed by Rupert Dupree two years ago and having obtained the nickname, along with her three sisters, of Weatherly Wallflowers due to a letter Rupert sent to every newspaper in England, meets her nemesis face-to-face.
Clarissa has been working as a spy for the home office and is sent to a Christmas house party to prevent a murder. Rupert is headed to the same party, for the same reason, but neither of them know the other. Initially, Clarissa hates Rupert for what he did, but he (& the family hosting the party, who have known him all his life) insist that he didn't do it. And as she gets to know him, Clarissa believes him.
Rupert is one of the most likable characters you'll ever meet, and he serves as great comic relief when things get tense. He's not too bright (in a scholarly way) but his emotional intelligence is off the charts. He's modest, kind, cheerful, and sometimes, a bit too self-denigrating. Also, he has an incredible memory. While he seems to have a terrible case of dyslexia, he can hear something once and never forget it. Clarissa comes to realize that, although she's a bluestocking and could never imagine herself married to someone less intelligent than herself, Rupert has many outstanding qualities that more than make up for his apparent idiocy. He's not dumb at all. He has a learning disability and has allowed those around him to brand him as stupid, and he's come to believe it. Clarissa helps him to see what he really is.
Rupert is so considerate that he gives Clarissa his coat and doesn't tell her how cold he is because he doesn't want to be a bother. As they tromp through the snow, eager to find their way back to the manor, they come upon the hunting lodge, which is closed for the winter. “The door proved to be locked. Fortunately, Rupert managed to overcome this obstacle by losing his balance, stumbling into the front window, and cracking a pane.” This just cracked me up.
This did too. “Rupert!” she cried, shaking him. “Rupert, are you alive? Please tell me you're alive!” "I'm not," he said in a groggy voice.
There were many times Rupert made me chuckle with his silliness. Clarissa, having years ago cloaked herself in caustic comments and a cold demeanor, even finds herself softening. Because her trunk was delayed in transit, she is unable to wear her usual brown dresses. Lady Emily loans her a brightly-colored wardrobe, and to her shock, Clarissa discovers she likes it. She finds happiness with Rupert and her whole outlook on life changes.
The attempted murder is thwarted, naturally, and it's not a shock. But it's only a part of the story, necessary to build a relationship between Clarissa and Rupert. Their love story takes center stage and I loved it.
The delightful Weatherby sisters are back and this time, they’re on the mission to save someone’s life!
Clarissa Weatherby’s life took a 180 when her fiancé jilted her and humiliated her and her sisters in the newspapers across England- forever to be known as the Weatherby wallflowers! Being a wallflower has its benefits like hiding on the fringes of society and overhearing plenty! Perfect for an agent of the crown!
When her next assignment takes her away to a holiday house party to protect a prominent Member ofParliament, she is shocked to find one of her foot low houseguest is none other than Rotten Rupert!!! Her erstwhile fiancé and nemesis!
But a circumstances keep pushing them together, Clarissa soon finds out that Rupert isn’t so rotten after all she starts wondering if perhaps she needs to be more worried about protecting her heart than the MP!
I absolutely adored seeing the storyline that was introduced in book one come full circle with Rupert’s full redemption! How could anyone hate that sweetheart? I love seeing these two offsets figure out what happened to put them against each other and find a way to not only get over it but see the perfection in the match in the first place!
Courtney McCaskill creates such wonderful families that I find myself hooked immediately! I’m already anxious for the next Weatherby wallflower to find her HEA!!!
An entertaining story with several twists and turns to catch an assassin. Clarissa is one of the Weatherly Wallflowers. She and her sisters' reputations were ruined two years ago by her betrothed, who sent a letter to all the newspapers breaking off the engagement with slanderous comments. Now working for the Home Office, she must quickly travel to Helmsley for a house party to protect a member of Parliament. The Home Office is sending one of their best to help her, but she doesn't know who it is. Rupert Dupree is back in England after two years on the continent. Riding together in the same coach to Helmsley Castle, Clarissa comes face to face with the man who destroyed the reputations of she and her sisters. Rupert has to prove it wasn't him, find the real culprit and win the lady. An unassuming spy and a very smart lady seem an unlikely pair of spies, but they balance each other. Passionate kisses and explicit sex. I voluntarily read and reviewed a copy of this book gifted by the author.
I really enjoyed this slow burn love story. The plot is very well written and a mixture of romance, spy story and attempted murder investigation. It has enemies to lovers, opposites attract, forced proximity and „he falls first“ tropes and is full of emotion, twists, humor, intrigue, suspense, danger and some steam. The protagonists are very likable. I fell in love with the character of Rupert right from the start. He is such a sunshine hero who always made me smile, I became angry and felt protective when he was mocked and bullied by others or when he spoke or thought disparagingly about himself. Clarissa is level-headed, intelligent and ambitious. It was heartwarming to see how she learnt to appreciate and love Rupert more and more over the course of the story, despite his „shortcomings“. The chemistry between them is great and they match each other perfectly.
Two years ago, Clarissa Weatherby and her family's reputation was ruined when a letter from her fiancé-to-be Rupert Dupree whom she had not yet met before was published in all the major newspapers in which he denounced her moral behavior just one day after his departure from England. From then on, she hated him and he became her sworn nemesis. But she soon found out that being England's most notorious wallflower also has its good sides. Clarissa is now working as a spy for the Home Office because everyone ignores inconspicuous wallflowers who secretly gather information. Her latest assignment is to infiltrate the Countess of Helmsley's Christmas party and, together with an unknown partner, to protect the controversial MP Oliver Baxter, who has already been the target of several assassination attempts. Rupert is charming, amiable and well liked but also known to be the dumbest man in England. Throughout his life, Rupert suffered from his shortcomings, his reputation, his father's hatred and the bullying from his older brother and his brother's friends. Rupert was all the more pleased about the arranged betrothal to Clarissa, because he always wanted an intelligent woman who would support and complement him. However, when he realised by chance that she didn't want to marry him because of his stupidity, he set her free, but unfortunately trusted the wrong person. After the failed engagement, he spent his time on the continent, where he worked as a spy due to his exceptional memory. On his return to England, he immediately sets off on his new assignment in Yorkshire, where he is to meet his new partner and protect a prominent MP. On the journey to the house party, Clarissa and Rupert meet in the stagecoach during a snowstorm and when they introduce themselves, Rupert is surprised that Clarissa hates him despite his good intentions at the time. Clarissa finds it hard to believe that the friendly, kind man in the stagecoach who saved her from freezing to death isn’t the villain she always thought he was. But Clarissa is even more surprised when she realises that Rupert is her new partner...
If you like romance novels with great characters, intrigue, twists and steam, you’ll certainly enjoy this book!
I received a free ARC of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own and left voluntarily.
The second book in the Weatherly Wallflowers series is another winning story by Courtney McGaskill. She writes such fun and engaging stories. They are all very well written with great storylines and characters. This one has a distinctly wintry feel to it.
This book features Clarissa Weatherly, the sister responsible for the Weatherly sister’s humiliating reputation and their unfortunate nickname. Two years before she was unceremoniously dumped by Rotten Rupert Dupree by letter printed in many newspapers across England. The two never met in person but the public rejection ruined the sisters by society. She now puts her nickname to good use by moving around society functions, hardly being noticed by anyone, gathering information as a spy for the Home Office. Her next mission is to keep safe a possible target for murder at a house party. She knows that another agent is due to arrive at the house party sometime after her to help her with protecting Mr. Oliver Baxter, a prominent politician. The mail coach she is travelling in up to the house party has one other very sleepy passenger in it. He eventually awakens and introduces himself as Rupert Dupree! He was also attending the house party at Helmsley Castle. Clarissa is horrified being in the presence of the man who ruined her reputation. He says he knows nothing of his letter to the papers and vows to prove his innocence but Clarissa doesn’t believe him and she now has to spend time at the same party as him while she works.
This plot was a great read. The two main characters are polar opposites to each other, she can be quite prickly and defensive, he plays the fool and is a self deprecating character. As they spend time together they start to change each other and their own opinions about themselves. There is a lot of self growth in Rupert and Clarissa throughout the book. Their slow burn love story was a joy to read. Most of the secondary characters were great and really enhanced the story. There were some surprises in the plot that caught me. There’s no epilogue in this story which I was a bit disappointed about but if you sign up to her newsletter, she has epilogues to download. I really love this series so far and look forward to the next Weatherly Wallflower to find love.
I received an ARC copy of this book. I’m voluntarily leaving this review.
Snowbound with the Scoundrel is the second book in The Weatherby Wallflowers series and I loved it. Courtney McCaskill masterfully weaves intrigue, spying, romance, and redemption into a captivating story.
Clarissa Weatherby, jilted by Rupert Dupree after all the nearby newspapers published his rejection to their union, leaving her humiliated along with her sisters, gaining the infamous reputation as the “Weatherby Wallflowers.” Now, years later, she has a chance to redeem herself with a mission from the Foreign Office: infiltrate the Countess of Helmsley’s Christmas party to uncover a traitor. But fate has a twist in store when she unexpectedly crosses paths with none other than “Rotten Rupert” himself.
Rupert is a truly memorable character—kind, intelligent in his own unique way, and quietly grappling with feelings of unworthiness due to his learning disabilities. I hated how others treated him, belittling him and disregarding him because of his issues. I applauded Clarissa for pointing out to Rupert what made him special since he didn’t see it. His vulnerability adds layers to his personality, making him someone that had flaws but was compelling and relatable. The library scene where Rupert opens up about his reputation in the bedroom is eye opening, showcasing his honesty and his intelligence, if only more men willingly listened to their ladies!
The author did such a great job showing the myriad of emotions Clarissa was feelings about Rupert and all that had transpired. The evolution of Clarissa’s perception of Rupert is beautifully rendered, capturing the gradual shift as they grow into perfect partners. The author’s nuanced portrayal of their dynamic makes this story shine.
With secrets, misunderstandings, danger, intrigue, and plenty of twists, this story is filled with passion, humor, and suspense.
I’m eager to see what’s next for the Weatherby sisters, especially after the tantalizing preview of book three. This series has been such a treat, and I can’t wait for the next installment!
A delightful, heartfelt read highly recommended. I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
This was such a fun, witty endearing read. So much going on, past secrets, mystery of who is doing the assassination attempts and why. Add a blizzard to the mix and a fellow you never ever hoped to meet again. Clarissa Weatherby was supposed to marry a Mr. Roert Dupree who she had never met. Before she can meet him, he cancelled the engagement in the most public of way. He posted a letter in all the papers for everyone to see. It was a very nasty, unkind letter stating he would not marry her and then left for the continent for years. In the meantime, the letter not only ruined her life but also that of her three sisters too. Known as the Weatherby Sisters no one will court them or invite them to society events. Clarissa was used to being a spinster, wallflower and listening to what other said. She finally found her true calling gathering information for the home office. No one pays attention to a wall flower. This allows her to see and hear a lot of information. She is given her first assignment to find out who is trying to kill a member of parliament. She is to go the house party being given by Countess of Helmsley, and met the other agent sent to help her. The last person she would have wanted to be alone with in a snow storm would be Mr. Robert Dupree! Oh, my these two have a lot to find out about the other. Neither has had a very happy life. With their past, secrets, danger and misunderstanding there is a lot of twist and turns in this read. I hated how Robert and Clarissa thought of themselves. I loved the parts with the spectacles!! Both are very special people and deserved better than what was always said about them. You will love the understanding, emotions and changing of the past these two go thru. Be sure and grab a copy and get started, this book has some steam to it but the scenes are perfect for this couple. I received and ARC from the Author and wish to thank her. This is my honest option and am freely giving it.
The second story of the Weatherby Wallflowers was so delightful, I really loved it. Clarissa Weatherby was jilted by Rupert Dupree, and it was done in the worst way, with a letter sent to all the papers in the country, which is when the Weatherby sisters became the Weatherby Wallflowers. Two years later, after much ridicule and grief, Clarissa’s circumstances have improved with her older sister’s marriage to a duke and her work for the Foreign Office. She’s sent alone on her second mission, to the Countess of Helmsley’s Christmas house party in order to prevent the murder of a member of parliament. She’s assured that another agent will be joining her there, as she races to the house party in the last carriage to leave before a snowstorm. The only other passenger in the carriage ends up to be Rotten Rupert Dupree himself. This is where the story gets fun, as Rupert is not at all what Clarissa thought, he’s a sweet, kind, bumbling sort of man with a great memory and pretty low opinion of himself. It was such fun seeing the two of them learn more about each other as they work together on their mission, where their strengths and weaknesses made the pair a great team. Rupert’s so used to being ridiculed and picked on by his family, that he’s surprised by Clarissa’s understanding and he’s happy to let her take the lead since she’s very good at it. Clarissa always thought she’d want a man that was very intelligent but learns there is more to a man than that, especially after seeing the MP she’s supposed to be saving and who has qualities she thought she would admire, end up being a real jerk to his wife and to Clarissa as well. I really look forward to the next story, which will feature Kate, the artist.
This is the second book in the Weatherby Wallflower series.
Clarissa Weatherby didn’t want to marry Rupert Dupree and people said he was an idiot, and she always wanted a man who was intelligent.
Clarissa working for the crown was on her way to a house party to determine who wanted to kill Mr. Baxter a political figure. Clarissa had a letter of introduction, and she was advised that the home office was sending their best person to help her. She’s stuck on the mail coach with no other than Rupert Dupree.
Rupert Dupree has just returned from the continent working for the crown, and on his way to a house party to determine who wants to kill Mr. Baxter. He finds out that the carriage he shares with is no other than Clarissa Weatherby who didn’t want to marry him.
Clarissa tells Rupert how his letter to the papers about her has ruined her and her sisters. Rupert tells her he never sent it to the papers and realized it was his brother friend. He was going to make everything right.
Clarissa and Rupert learn about each other and never realized they had a lot in common. Watching how they fall in love with each other and not sure if the other feels the same.
This is a story about coming to terms with what happen and realized how they care for each other. The who done it and how Clarissa figured it out. I received a free copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving a review.
Clarissa Weatherby has been recruited! She who loved to fade in the background and wants nothing to do with the Ton since she is a Weatherby Wallflower with a dreaded reputation! The person responsible is Rupert Dupree the scoundrel who wrote such a horrible marriage rebuttal it was in all the newspapers around England it’s garnered her and her sisters a horrible reputation! Which has been redeemed somewhat because the oldest is a Duchess! Clarissa is on the way to a house party to save the life of one Oliver Baxter who has had several attempts on his life! She would meet her fellow co conspirator and they would launch an investigation together and try to keep this prominent member of the House of Common's safe! Except yes you guessed who her partner is and let the shenanigans begin! Rupert is known to be very pleasing in the bedroom which is he believes his one talent! He has very low self esteem but is kind and wonderful man who is easy on the eyes! Can these two bridge years of misunderstandings and solve a case for the Crown without injuring one another!? Love the interaction and the slow trust and build on this relationship! Get ready to laugh and love with your new book boyfriend Rupert! RIP to the old Clarissa because this new one leaps off the pages! Bravo well done! I received an ARC copy for my unbiased review!
Ohhh just when I thought Courtney had released her best book she goes and writes another amazing story!!
Clarissa thought she was destined to be a spinster/wallflower for the rest of her life because of an article that was written about her and her sisters by the man who jilted her until that same man ends up being her partner in a case to help solve a case for the home office.. And he proves that he isn't what she thought he was.
Rupert thought he was destined to be alone as a spy for the home office because he can't read he can't write but he has an excellent memory and then he comes across the woman he has never forgotten about and he learns about an article that destroyed her and her sisters, and that she despises him but he will do anything to prove it wasn't him to that wrote it..
As they work alongside each other, they feel that they not only work well with each other but they were meant for each other in every way possible..
This story had some amazing twist and turns with the solving of the case along with the couple finding ways to hide who they are.
I'm excited to see what Courtney has in store next..
I received this book as an arc in exchange as an advanced reader's copy in exchange for an honest voluntary review and this is purely based upon my own personal opinion and that of no one else.
Thanks to the author for a copy of this ebook and this is my freely given opinion.
This is the second story about the Weatherby Wallflowers, and follows A Wallflower Never Surrenders. Younger sister, Clarissa, was jilted a few years prior by Rupert Dupree. This was an arranged betrothal where neither party had, as yet, set eyes on each other. Clarissa had heard rumours about her affianced, namely that he was not the most intelligent of fellows, but noted to be talented in bed. She had her own qualms, not wanted to be married to a dunce.
However, this betrothal ended up being the downfall of all the Weatherby sisters as a very publicly embarrassing jilting occurs when Rory publishes a letter in many newspapers ending the betrothal and denouncing the Weatherby sisters publicly. Since then, the sisters have been shunned because of their status as the reviled Weatherby Wallflowers, and their future looking bleak after their abandonment by their narcissistic father. Things are starting to look up though since the eldest, Eleanor married the Duke of Norwood, who was willing to take all the sisters under his brotherly and protective wing.
Clarissa, despite no longer facing penury, was seeking a greater purpose. To this end, she told her family she sought to be the companion to an elderly lady. But this was a guise to Clarissa being trained to work as a spy for the Home Office. After all, who suspects the elderly napping lady and her mousy companion of being spies.
However, when her employer falls ill, Clarissa is forced to pursue their mission on her own, She must make it to a festive house party in a blizzard to protect an MP who is suspected to be a target for an assassination. Her handler has informed her via missives that he would be sending one of their best to assist her.
What she does not expect is that her great nemesis, Rotten Rupert Dupree himself would be her mate in the coach, as he is also invited to the same house party.
A wonderful story written with humour and very likeable characters. Rupert suffers from an unfortunate learning disability, and because of this develops skills to compensate, but also suffers a great deal of embarrassment and people taking advantage of him. It comes to light that the public scandal and jilting was not Rupert's fault and both Clarissa and Rupert were the targets of hateful mischief, and now that they are forced to meet and work with each other, Clarissa and Rupert discover that they are as well suited as their matchmakers originally surmised and this is their second chance.
A fun, very enjoyable storyline, with Christmas, enemy to lovers, second chance themes. Rupert is a sweet character I quite enjoyed and this clarified how he was characterized, in absentia, by his friend, Jasper, the Duke of Norwood.
I just loved Clarissa and Rupert's story. The hint we got at the end of book 1 left me yearning to read this one and thankful I got an ARC of it so I got to read it a few days ahead of others. And my yearning was well warranted, as this book didn't disappoint at all.
It's set up as an enemies to lovers premise, but within the first few pages of meeting Rupert's character, I couldn't help but feel bad for the guy. He obviously struggles through life and is deemed as the town's dunce, but he's the complete opposite of a dunce. He's brilliant in his own right. I loved when he's in the library and he explains how he got his reputation in the bedroom. Brilliant Rupert - absolutely brilliant. I wish all men adapted his attitude and aptitude in the bedroom.
While this couple is slowly righting wrongs from their past and forging forth with a new romance, there is a hunt going on for an assassin. It keeps up the mystery in the book, until a few chapters before the end. I called who the assassin was pretty early on in the story, but got the target completely wrong. Loved that little twist.
And the found family that Rupert has in the de Roos', Norwood and Clarissa's sisters, is just the absolute perfect ending for this couple. And having it set in the snowy holiday season in a castle is the perfect setting for this story to take place.
The preview for book 3 sounds like it will be just as deliciously good as the first two in this series have been - can't wait for that.
This book follows the second sister, Clarissa Wetherby, into a house party on behalf of the home office. She is travelling alone, but for one other passenger. This passenger happens to be the one man Clarissa didn’t want to ever meet, Rupert Dupree. She had given him the moniker Rotten Rupert after his betrayal at their betrothal. He had told the whole country, via letters to the papers, that he wasn’t going to marry Clarissa. This became the reason that 4 sisters were given the name Wetherby Wallflowers. Now, 2 years later, they have to work together to save a member of parliament from being killed. This was an absolute joy to read. Courtney brings the characters alive as you read through the story. There is a mutual regard for each other, and the banter is honest between them. Over the course of the house party these two fall for each other, and there are twists and turns to discover the real reason for the leak to the papers. This is a stand alone book, but to get the full back ground, it is advisable to read the first book, A Wallflower never Surrenders. Congratulations Courtney on a fantastic, gripping story.
Clarissa has been given a mission from the Home Office. When she boards the coach to her destination, there is only one other passenger. The man introduces himself as Rupert Dupree. Clarissa holds Rotten Rupert responsible for her and her sisters being social outcasts. It seems their bad history might be a misunderstanding. This is an entertaining story with some interesting characters. Clarissa and Rupert are on the same mission for the Home Office, but don’t realize it right away. After several incidents, they begin to wonder if they are protecting the person who is really in danger. The story is full of suspense and danger. Clarissa and Rupert are a blast. They really are perfect for one another. Rupert has a problem with reading and writing (dyslexia), but he compensates with a perfect memory (very handy in his job). He is cheerful, witty, smart, and sweet. Clarissa is a sassy, intelligent girl who guards her feelings. The attraction that never was develops as they work together. The fast-paced story is filled with suspense, action, and danger. There is lots of humor, a lovely romance and a wonderful ending. I voluntarily reviewed a special copy of this book.
I just love Courtney McCaskill's books. They are full of steamy goodness, lovable characters and lots of humour. They are everything that I love getting from reading Historical romance.
Rupert, the Hero is just a sweetheart and often misunderstood. I felt for him being 'labelled not too smart' and how he was treated for that. However he never let life get him down! I love how there was redemption in this story and how Clarissa, the heroine got a second chance at love after being jilted.
It had a Pride and Prejudice feel to it as well as both characters believed rumours about the other and were shown that opinions can change on further acquaintance.
If you love a second chance romance, steam, a cinnamon roll Hero, intelligent heroine and lots of humour then you have to read this book.
I received an arc via the author and this opinion is my own and review is submitted voluntarily.
I really enjoyed this second instalment in the series. There are 2 story lines involved, firstly the meeting of Clarissa & Rupert who publicly jilted her in writing before meeting her several years ago. Secondly her home office task to protect an MP who has had several attempts on his life. Will she see the true Rupert and give him a chance to correct the wrong done to her and her family. Can she find the culprit and save the day. These plots intertwine perfectly and I loved that Clarissa was open and clever enough to trust Rupert and give him a second chance. Rupert is not your typical hero. It was refreshing for him not to be the most clever, handsome dashing hero but to be a more normal person, with flaws. This story contains some steam. Thoroughly looking forward to the other sisters adventures. I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
Clarissa Weatherby is on her way to a house party to investigate who is trying to murder a MP. She is surprised to learn that the man who is sharing the Mail coach is none other than Rupert Dupree, her betrothed who ruined her reputation and her sisters when he jilted her. Although they had never met, Clarissa dubbed him as “Rotten Rupert”. Once they arrive at the house party, they learn they must work together on the case for the home office. As they get to know each other, Clarissa learns that her assumptions of Rupert were wrong and Rupert has to work through his feelings of not being good enough for someone like Clarissa. Snowbound with the Scoundrel has it all, conflict, mystery and the rumors and gossip that is well known amongst the aristocracy. Through it all, Clarissa and Rupert get their HEA. I received an ARC from the author through BookFunnel and I am voluntarily leaving a review.
Both the main characters are wonderfully likeable. It was extremely pleasant to read how the characters communicated so well and how they recognized the immense talents the other possessed. I found the FMC particularly well written. I enjoyed how she chased after what she wanted without coming across as shrewish or just stupidly whiny. I liked how she understood her own shortcomings and wasn't afraid to own them and accept assistance and work with a partner. She didn't act like she had anything to prove. This is what a truly smart independent woman does. No foolish impetuous decisions here! 🎉
4 star instead of 5 because I was really looking forward to them solving the case or having some other big moment using Rupert's amazing ability to recall what he hears. I was looking for the AHA! Or something a bit more Columbo-ish.
Well written, fast paced action and drama. When you put two spies together who have a not os good history, you get all kinds of action and intrigue. Clarrisa is now working for the home office as a spy. She is being sent to a home party to help protect a member of Parliament. It turns out the person who made her life terrible and her a wallflower plus ruined her reputation is Rupert. He broke off her engagement by sending a not so nice letter to the newspaper. In the carriage traveling thru a storm, they both have much to discuss. As they share their time together , they both discover some personal growth. Great characters, both bad and good and the storyline is fantastic. Great book to curl up with and enjoy. Would strongly recommend to others. I received this story and leave this unbiased, honest review.
What a delicious story for Clarissa and Rupert! After reading her sister’s story and finding out what Rupert did, it was fun to read this one-especially when they find themselves together in a very strange way! I adored Clarissa’s strength and “take no prisoners “ attitude and felt so sorry for Rupert and his problems. How they figured each other out was funny and how protective of each other was so precious. It was a good “who-dun-it” mystery that had me guessing almost all the way through, even though I had a suspicion before the reveal, I did not expect the total results! A good mystery , a beautiful romance story and I adored the scene with Rupert’s brother- THAT was spot on!!
I received this story for free and these are my own views.
Tropes: enemies to lovers; forced proximity; "he falls first"; MC's solve a mystery Steam level:3 Part of a series, but fine as a standalone.
4.5 stars rounded up. This series overall has had its ups and downs, but this entry is a sweet gem. While other HR writers focus on brooding heroes and morally grey rakes, Courtney McCaskill specializes in cinnamon roll heroes who shine, and I love it. Rupert is so endearing, witty, goofy, bright (yes, really), modest...the list goes on. I loved the banter between him and Clarissa and even Rupert's interior monologues captured his personality so well. Clarissa has great chemistry with him, and the steam is perfect.
Perfect holiday-themed escapism!
I read an advanced reader copy of this book and this is my honest, voluntary review. Thanks to the author and publisher for this opportunity.
Snowbound with the Scoundrel, by Courtney McCaskill and part of Revenge of the Wallflowers was absolutely spectacular! It was nice to visit with the Weatherby Wallflowers again, and I absolutely love Clarissa. The intelligent and mousy Weatherby, Clarissa has a keen mind and deep distrust of men, after her former betrothed wrote a letter to the papers scorning her and her sisters two years ago. Sent north out of London on a case, she ends up sharing a carriage with none other than the scoundrel who betrayed her, Rupert Dupree. But Rupert has been out of the country for two years and had no idea of what had occurred.
What I loved most about this story was Clarissa’s capacity to forgive, and Rupert’s self-deprecating heart. This story had everything; mystery, dislikable villains, tender moments and steamy love scenes. It was the best!
Snowbound with the Scoundrel is a really enjoyable read! I enjoy all of Courtney McCaskill's books, and this holiday story is great. Clarissa is an agent for the crown, and on her way to a country-side estate to investigate death threats of a politician. On her way to the estate, she finds herself a passenger in a carriage with her nemesis-- a man who publicly disavowed his engagement to her two years prior, making Clarissa and her sisters into a social pariahs. Not everything is as it seems, which is the theme of the book. Courtney McCaskill writes a great story, and great dialogue and funny bits. Both Rupert and Clarissa have great chemistry together, and great funny bits together. I really enjoyed this, especially around Christmas! This is a great second book in this series.
I really enjoy Ms. McCaskill’s writing. A sweet romance with a bit of mystery and lots of humor and characters you would love to have as friends. Clarissa is on her second assignment, to try to prevent an assassination, but as one of the “Weatherby Wallflowers”, isn’t taken seriously by the person she’s trying to protect. Rupert Dupree, the man who publicly jilted and humiliated Clarissa, ends up at the same house party on his return from the continent. Wonderful second chance romance. Second in the series, but can be read as a standalone. I received a free copy from the author, and this is my honest and voluntary review.
Clarissa is an agent for the crown and she is assigned a partner, Mr Rupert Dupree, who happens to be the same Rupert Dupree who published slanderous emails about her. The thing is, Rupert has a reading disability, likely dyslexia, and could not have written the letter. Can they make amends? They are actually well suited for each other.
Rupert is an adorable, and Clarissa blossoms like a flower, turning into her best self while working with Rupert.
A couple mild intimate scenes.
This is worth a read. I’ll have to check out the rest of the series.
I absolutely loved our MMC. He was so kind and sweet and smart, and it absolutely broke my heart that he didn’t see the good in himself and called himself dumb.
This made me love Claire even more because she wanted to be so nice to him after experiencing how he was in real life, even after what she thought he did to her.
This was a really cozy book where the misunderstandings are cleared up fast, the mystery is fun (though I knew who it was from the moment they were introduced), and it was about two sweet people finding each other, working together, realizing their own worth.
Rupert, a jolly good time and kind of superficial but underneath he is so kind and beautiful. I am infatuated with Rupert. Opposites attract is the name of this game and what a game it is. We all have our special abilities and Rupert doesn’t recognize his until Clarissa points it out and they have a lovely awakening. I so loved this story. There is a little mystery thrown which brings Rupert and Clarissa together even more and the work together so well. Their story is stunning and amazing and I am gushing over and over but it is worth it.
