Jessie is talked into becoming her Aunt Clara for a month so that both her aunt and her mother do not lose their jobs. Yup, it's like a chain reaction. Her mom and Aunt Clara work at the same agency that helps wealthy people find reliable 'help.' But her mom is an administrator who makes appointments and serves coffee. Her Aunt Clara worked as a nanny for over twenty years before she was finally accepted into the most immense, prestigious, and expensive agency in the City of Angels. But then, she twisted her ankle.

Now for the sales pitch, and her mom’s good at it too, "Please," she begged. "It's not like they all refused; it's just that . . . the father is pretty . . . severe." "Severe? Do you mean difficult?" She chuckles. Not only is the girl a disaster, but her father is also a problem.  "The father is . . . a workaholic. He owns a huge development company. He likes everything to be... In order."  The way her mom can sugarcoat things is an art. Jessie believes this man is a pain in the a$$. Her mom has told her that the father requires a different nanny each time they come to Los Angeles because he claims he 'wasn’t delighted with the previous one.'

The nannies aren't happy either because the child is pretty spoiled, but they work through their teeth because of the money. "Honey, please." Her Mom continues, "I can find another nanny easily, but Clara will probably lose her job." Her mom’s good she guilt-trips her. "So you mean that the agency doesn't even know she can't take this job?" Jessie will have to pretend she’s Clara or she will be considered an unreliable worker, and they will let her go after she recovers. Her mom tells her she’s seen it a thousand times. The thing is Jessie knows nothing about children she asks her mom what she should do?

Her mom says, "He's paying twenty-five grand." Jessie couldn't have heard that right. That's impossible. "Yes, twenty-five thousand dollars, Jessie," Mom repeats as if reading her thoughts. "But . . . what does he expect for twenty-five thousand dollars?" "Are you in? I don't want to hurry you, but I'm in a rush, honey." "Of course, I'm in," she exhales, unprepared for what she is getting herself into. "Send me the details," she sighs. "Okay. They will expect you at two p.m." "Tomorrow?" My feet slow. "So soon?" "Today, Jessie. In four hours. You should get moving since it will take three hours to get there."

"It's not in Los Angeles?" "No, he needs a nanny in Big Bear Lake." “Whoa!” It’s not a house, it’s a mansion. The door swings open before she can get to it, and she finds herself standing in front of... Don't be ridiculous, Jessie. Wrestlers don't wear suits. It's probably her father's bodyguard. Mom said he’s a multi-millionaire, and they usually have bodyguards. Besides, what would a wrestler be doing here? Jessie cannot look away. He's incredibly attractive. The heat she’s feeling is improper. He clears his throat, studying her with the same avid, confused interest she’s experiencing.

Jessie should say something. Anything. Let him know who she is and why she’s there. She opens her mouth to say something . . . "You're late." His voice is deep and low, which makes her shiver. She looks down at the watch on her wrist. "It's two minutes past two." "As I said, you're late." "You're the nanny?" “I am. Why wouldn’t I be a nanny?” “And you have over ten years of experience with children?"  She’s screwed. "I started babysitting when I was young," She lies with a poker face. "If I said I did, I do," she continues, lowering her gaze. "Is that a contract?"

"Yes, a non-disclosure agreement. He needs her to sign it." A non-disclosure agreement? Who is he, exactly? Jeff Bezos? "Are you Mia's father?" Jessie asks. He can’t be. That's impossible. He's wealthy, a family man, and this gorgeous? No, that never happens in real life, only in Hallmark movies. "Who else would I be?" he asks as he frowns. "Yes, I'm Liam McFadden. And what are you wearing?" "Hi, Mia." Jessie smiles at her. "I'm your new nanny." "Who else would you be?" "Mia, Clara said hello," Liam tells her sternly. Right.

Clara. Her name is Clara. Let's remember.  "Hello," the girl snaps back at her father and crosses her arms. Jessie guess she's not just mad at her. "I would say she's not always like this, but . . ." Liam says, looking at her, "lately, she is." "Oh, don't worry." Jessie smiles. "I already see a resemblance between you two." He tries to hide it, but she sees a slight grin on his face. Enjoyed this immensely.

Fitting Into the Family . . .

Jessie’s mother has been begging her to take a job as a nanny as a way to save her aunt’s job. Apparently the young girl “is an angel” according to her mom. But Jessie quickly replies that nannies don’t walk out on angels. The fact that they couldn’t find a replacement when Aunt Clara twisted her ankle means there is a definite reason, such as the wealthy father being “difficult” and no one wants to work for him. He likewise hasn’t liked any of the nannies they have sent before. And the nannies all claim the child is spoiled. Then her mom said Aunt Clara would be considered undependable if she lets a twisted ankle stop her from taking the job. She will be branded as “unreliable”. So she wants Jessie to pretend to be Clara and accept the job as nanny for 9-year-old Mia. And to tempt Jessie further, her mom says the pay is $25,000. That would be enough for Jessie to pay the deposit on an art studio she wants. In return, all she would have to do is look after the child, homeschool her, and cook if the chef isn’t available (she only knows how to make mac & cheese). The job will only be for a month. As soon as she says yes, her mom said she is due in Big Bear Lake in 4 hours… and it takes 3 hours to get there!

When she finally arrives, she is in awe as she looks around. So when the door suddenly opened, she walked right into a hard chest, looked up to see the tall man’s face, and was mesmerized by his eyes. The man is incredibly attractive, and she figures this must be her new boss’ bodyguard. The first word out of his mouth is, “You’re late,” then he criticized her t-shirt, jeans, and sneakers. Introducing her to his surly, angry daughter, he apologizes for her attitude. (My favorite part of the book is Jessie’s response: “Oh, don’t worry – I already see a resemblance between you two…” And Liam McFadden tried to hide his grin.)

Liam and Jessie both seem to be attracted to the other, although they are hiding it. After Jessie’s first encounter with Mia, she had called her mom and got some advice, finding that amusing since she herself had been a bit bratty. But the advice worked and by the end of the day, Liam walked in to see them washing the dishes together and laughing. He was amazed. Mia told him all about their first day and told him to call her by her middle name, Jessie. Mia told him excitedly about her day, that she painted, did yoga, and rearranged both her closet and Jessie’s. His daughter was actually happy! When he later tried to find fault with Jessie’s educational activities with Mia, Jessie answers his questions with confidence, she defends Mia’s climbing a tree and explains she was right there with her as it became a learning experience. When he said other nannies have a strict set routine of reading, visiting the park, or a craft. Jessie’s response impressed him: "Every child is unique, and I try to cater to their needs and interests. Mia is bright and curious. Why limit her? Change leads to growth." She is starting to become indispensable to them. But what will he do when he learns she is not the person she claimed to be? Will he remain inflexible? Or will he listen to her and accept an apology? Will he recognize that she has fallen for him and Mia and losing Jessie will hurt all of them?

ARC Review: That Single Dad by Kate J. Blake – Sweet, Spicy, and Slightly Rushed
⭐️⭐️⭐️ (3/5)
Spice Level: 🌶️🌶️ (A little heat)

The Pour: A Quick, Sweet Escape with Some Uneven Notes

That Single Dad gave me exactly what I was expecting from a Kate J. Blake novella—a fast, flirty read packed with tropes and just enough steam to keep things interesting. Jessie, an art teacher who pretends to be a nanny to help her aunt, finds herself working for a brooding single dad who’s all business until she starts to melt his grumpy exterior. It’s short, sweet, and serves up a guaranteed happily ever after.

🥃 What I Enjoyed

The Trope Goodness: I’m a sucker for a fake identity story, and the “nanny with a secret” angle was handled in a light, fun way. Jessie’s warmth and sense of humor played well against the hero’s stern, boss energy.

The Hero: He’s the perfect DILF—protective, charmingly clueless at times, and absolutely devoted to his kid. Those tender father moments gave the story a cozy, heartfelt touch.

The Heat: For a novella, the chemistry definitely pops. The tension builds quickly, and when things finally heat up, it feels earned.

The Feel-Good Factor: This is the kind of book I can read in one sitting and close with a small smile. Low angst, high sweetness, and a guaranteed HEA—sometimes that’s all I need.

🥃 What Didn’t Work for Me

The Pacing: Everything happens so fast. The romance, the reveal, the resolution—it’s all crammed into a short space, and I found myself wanting more time to really feel those emotional beats.

Character Depth: Because of the quick pace, the story leans heavily on tropes instead of digging deeper into the characters’ motivations.

The Child Element: I have to agree with some other reviewers here—I didn’t love that Jessie’s secret put the child’s safety in a questionable spot. It’s not a dealbreaker, but it did pull me out of the story a bit.

The Finish

That Single Dad is a fun, trope-heavy novella that goes down easy. It’s a feel-good, slightly spicy escape that doesn’t take itself too seriously—but it also doesn’t linger long after the last page. If you’re in the mood for a quick read with a hot single dad, a sweet heroine, and a guaranteed happy ending, this one’s worth a sip.

The Perfect Pairing: A Bourbon Milk Punch—sweet, smooth, and comforting, even if it fades a little too soon.

Tropes: Nanny/Boss · Billionaire · Grumpy/Sunshine · Single Dad · Curvy Heroine · Secret Identity.

I am voluntarily reviewing an advanced reader copy of this book.

Jessie had no intention of being a nanny but when her aunt gets injured and is in danger of losing her job her mum manages to convince her to take her place only no one can know, so when she agrees to the swap, she has no idea what she is letting herself in for. Meeting Liam is a shock she never though that she would be attracted to him and his daughter Mia is nothing like she expected and soon she cant remember being as happy as she is, but its all based on a lie what will happen when the truth comes out will she lose everything that she never knew she wanted, will Liam sack her and destroy her aunts career or could she about to win the most precious thing of all, family and love?

Liam wanted to build a stronger relationship with his daughter and that meant leaving the life they had behind in New York and move closer to his parents. Hiring a nanny seemed the best thing, however meeting Jessie has him rethinking everything when he feels the instant pull of attraction, but he can tell that she is hiding something which keeps him guarded. That is until his nine-year-old daughter Mia laughs and for the first time in a long time he sees the real joy in her eyes, his feelings for Jessie were hard to ignore before but now he knows that she was meant to be theirs. Will Jessie ever tell him the truth, and can he trust that what they have is love if she does not come clean?

Great addition to the Curvy Girl Dates series and to be honest this is an author that never lets me down, a short steamy ready that keeps me involved in waiting for that HEA that we all want. 4.3* read.

I really enjoyed the previous books in the Curvy Girl Dates series, so I was really happy to find the latest addition to the series on Booksprout. That Single Dad brings Jessie and Liam together when Jessie takes a chance on her mother’s advice in the form of a nannying job.

She’s used to LA life, but the job is a rural town three hours away.

Liam is a single dad after his ex wife Bianca decided motherhood wasn’t for her. This impacted not just him but his daughter Mia.

Mia is a hard to reach nine year old who has a real character. She loves chocolate cake and doing what she wants.

Will Jessie get on with her?

The pacing is quicker and perfect for the book.

Great banter, sweet and then sexy romance won me over. The character growth is incredibly well done. First, I didn’t know whether to like Mia, Liam, or Liam’s friend Jake.

I ended up rooting for them all. I am loving this series and want there to be many more books as part of it.

5 stars.

Thanks to Kate J, Blake.

Jessie is an art teacher, but her Aunt Clara hurt her ankle and cannot be a nanny for Liam McFadden and his daughter. Finding another nanny from the agency is not happening as other nannies do not want to work for him. Jessie takes the job, it pays quite well. But when she meets Liam, she knows why other nannies wouldn’t work for him. She connects well with Mia, and Liam starts to soften. They are both attracted to each other, but both know they shouldn’t. Can they stay away from each other?

This is a novella, and some stories work as novellas, this one kind of didn’t. Everything felt so rushed, everything happened so fast. It was hard to connect with the relationship. This is part of the Curvy Girl Dates series, but I wouldn’t have known that the FMC was “curvy” but for the image on the cover. It’s not really mentioned in the book at all.

I did enjoy the connection/relationship between Jessie and Mia. That was very sweet. We got to see that relationship the most – at least it felt that way to me. The spice in the book was just okay. I am glad that the book wasn’t filled with it, but like I said, everything happened so quickly that I just didn’t believe it.

If you need or want a quick, spicy read, check this one out.

That Single Dad is a book I thoroughly LOVED reading and couldn’t get enough of the story. That Single Dad is a Curvy Girl Dates series, and this is the story of Liam and Jessie. Liam and Jessie are fascinating characters, Liam is a Billionaire single father while Jessie is an art teacher who decides to pretend to be a nanny to help her aunt keep her job. What will Liam do when he finds out the truth about Jessie? Will he fire her, or will he allow her to stay on as the nanny to his child? One way to get the answers to these questions is to read this amazing book. I love that Liam and Jessie’s story has a happy ending with these two getting engaged to one another. Liam is a grumpy single father who is looking for someone to care for his young daughter. Jessie is someone who cares about her family and tries her best to help them. That Single Dad is certainly a book that I would recommend to other readers who are looking for books that can be read in one sitting.

Jessie takes a job as a nanny for a single dad and a tough 9 year old because the pay is good and she wants to help her aunt out who was suppose to be the nanny but ended up injured. When Jessie comes face to face with Liam the attraction is instant but his broody and grumpy ways has her regretting taking this job and wanting to strangle him, add in Mia and Jessie has her work cut out for her. As Jessie starts to get closer to Mia and has her laughing and being the happy 9 year old she knew was under that tough exterior Liam is shocked and also falling for Jessie, but to keep things professional he keeps his distance because Jessie is hiding something. This quick read was cute, full of fun banter, and emotions that have you falling in love with everyone and wanting to spend more time with them.

Liam is a single Dad to a 9 year old. When he moves back to his home town he needs a nanny for a month. Jessie is an art teacher. Her Aunt Clara is a nanny but broke her ankle. She needs a fill in nanny in order to keep her job.
Jessie takes the job and falls in love with the grumpy single dad and the daughter.
Liam is overworked, grumpy, hot, alpha male, who is overly protective and possessive. He wants Jessie but has never mixed business with pleasure before.
Jessie is an unconventional nanny, but Mia loves her.
Great read. The chemistry is off the charts with these two.

Blake did a great job creating these characters who really brought this story to life. The main characters (Liam & Jessie) were a hoot and I fell a little more in love with Liam with every page I read. The secondary characters (Mia, grandparents, best friend, mom etc) all added to the story in a very positive manner. It was easy to get absorbed into this story and the emotions swirling within. I admit I was anxious too when Jessie was battling with needing to tell Liam about her true identity. Can you imagine?! What a roller-coaster ride!

I liked this book but it did feel a bit rushed which is why it's not 5 stars. The writing was really good, witty and descriptive. The pacing was good to until about 2/3rds of the way through. Then it seemed like it was all wrapped up too quickly. I would have liked more description about how the relationship develops. I liked Jessie alot, she was fun and confident. Liam did come off as being a bit surely and rude for no particular reason but then we get point of view which explains it a bit but still comes off abrasive sometimes.

A quick and easy-to-read story that pairs a sexy single dad with an art teacher who takes a temporary job nannying his daughter. They experience an insta-lust connection, which they act on after almost a week and with a little nudge from his friend. The epilogue takes place a couple of weeks later and, honestly, felt a bit far-fetched.

The audiobook is narrated using a virtual voice, which made the tone very flat (especially compared to audiobooks with human narrators) and not very engaging. Although I picked it up at the end of a busy day, I often found myself drifting off and feeling a bit bored, to be honest.

When Jessie allows her mother to talk her into accepting a nanny position to save her aunts job it will open up an entirely different world for her. Liam takes one look at Jessie and sparks ignite between them, but she is there to be a nanny for his daughter. When Jessie changes his daughter's behavior for the better, he begins to see her in a new light, but she isn't whom she says she is. When the truth come out will Jessie lose Liam as well. This story kept me glued to the pages from start to finish.

Jesse’s mom asks her to be a fill in nanny for her aunt who was injured. The job was only for a month and she would receive twenty five thousand dollars. Jessie an artist desperately wants her art studio knows that this money would help her achieve her goals. Liam the father is a single dad who loves his daughter but they just moved away from NY to California needs a nanny to watch his daughter while he works and get her ready for the upcoming school year. Attraction is immediate between these two and isn’t long before they crossed the line. Very cute short story.

Received as an ARC in return for my honest review.

💛 Grumpy x Sunshine
💛 Billionaire boss
💛 Nanny x Single Dad
💛 Short read

This was my first read from this author and a really nice short introduction into their work. I loved the characters and the relationship between them was right where it needed to be. My only complaint is that I actually wanted it to be a full length novel and not a less than 100 page novella aha 😂

I can’t wait to see what else is to come from Kate and will definitely be delving into the other books in this series.

Another absolutely awesome read by the author!!! Jessie and Liam's story is full of witty banter, laughter, tension, sizzling chemistry, friendship, family, secrets and more. She may be pretending to be an experienced nanny, but the intense chemistry and connection between them is very real. Will they admit that they are attracted to one another?...

My Amazon review about this book:

I usually do not leave reviews here, but I just loved this so much I thought it deserved one.

This is a short book, good for you that have little time to read or wants to pass the time somewhere.

The story is well written and smooth. The characters are great and I just loved Mia! Seriously, I read a lot and it has been months since I picked up a short story this good. I recommend it, people.

A spicy Billionaire boss/ Nanny romance

First book by Kate J Blake that I have read and it won’t be the last.

Love these two so much, Liam and Jessie characters were a delight to read, I love a nanny and boss romance and this had it all. I enjoy a Novella but god this book could have been a full book as the two main characters were so good together and the Daughter and best friend we didn’t get to see more .

For me it’s a 4 1/2 🌟 book

Lovely little read

I decided to pick a random novella on KU to read.

Kate J Blake is a new author to me and I devoured this story.

It's a very short and easy read.  Great for passing time or cleansing your palette between books.

Instant attraction but she's the nanny,  he's my boss. When he finally snaps the passion and adoration is fabulous.  A wonderful gooey marshmallow of a story.

This was a cute read—great if you’re looking for something short and sweet. But I think it would have l worked better as a full length novel. The ending was super rushed and I feel like the engagement was really unnecessary for the timeline of the story. Not every romance needs to end with an engagement/wedding—especially if it’s a novella!

Well damn. This was a sweet spicy romance. I enjoyed the MFC and the connection she made with the Billionaires daughter. And then the drama-rama between the MFC and the MMC, ha.. perfectly perfect. Being that this a novella I should’ve known… but it’s ok I didn’t… the MMC said “SCREW THIS I’m taking what’s mine!” I love it. I would love to read the next book.
