There are three phases to a zombie apocalypse... run... hide...fight. Billy was there right at the beginning when the first victim coughed over their lunch. Amanda was working as a nurse at the E.R. and Samantha was about to meet the cult behind the whole outbreak. Professor Preston, head of the CDC, tried to rally the forces of science but found himself awaiting his execution in a junkyard. The list of characters grows as they run, hide, and learn to fight, not just the growlers, but the forces that unleashed them. The government tried nuking the growlers, but that just spread the infection. They tried sending in tanks, but the infection got inside. They tried sending in the Marines, now the growlers have body armor.
I enjoyed the political intrigue aspect of this one even though it was a little bit on the nose in some regards. The cast of characters was pretty good too.
I get no end of pleasure from all the names authors like to give zombies to not have to call them zombies. IN this one, they are called Growlers. Evil Christian religious cult, evil fascist President, and a rag tag group of survivors clash in a fight for survival and the hearts and minds of the world in this zombie (growler) romp.
I rated this two stars because I did like that the zombies were a little bit different still mindless, but with some variables. Other than that, this was definitely not my zombie cup of tea. Way too much annoying political rhetoric. Cliché mustache twirling villain, who is a fanatical Christian nut job. Illegal immigrant heroes who Will outsmart The corrupt government single-handedly. This book was crowded with anti-christian narratives, corrupt politics , Conspiracy theories and poor downtrodden masses. I don’t need that in my fiction. I can just turn on the TV. The post apocalyptic zombie story was hopelessly lost and buried under an agenda. The writing and phrasing was not terrible, the editing was all right. Some will probably enjoy this story .
Wow! I seriously LIKED this book!! I sort of thought that a zombie book wouldn't be my cup of tea however this one had me on the edge of my seat and looking for zombies everywhere. JC Sampson writes characters that are not carbon copies of each other; each has his/her own personality, fears, etc. as well as each has his/her different courage. I'm going to take a quick break and read a romance and then back to #2 of the series HIDE. I feel I need to pace myself so I don't consume all of the books in a very short time and then feel bereft of something to read. I HIGHLY recommend this book and probably the series if they're anywhere near as good as RUN.
Phase One Run by Joseph Sampson is the first volume of the Growler Chronicles. It tells the story of the beginning of a zombie apocalypse and is told from different characters viewpoints. The characters are interesting and the story is entertaining. There are plot twists that keep the readers interest. I am looking forward to the next installment. Phase One Run is a Goodread. I won a copy of this book on Goodreads in a giveaway.
Pretty good read, really enjoyed the unravel of mystery to the whole situation and some of the characters are good, some generic. Will definitely give the second book a go at some point. There were some parts with the growlers that had my heart race a bit faster, but also felt a bit obvious that the character was gonna be okay near the end. Still enjoyable, just three stars for me. Wouldn't mind getting into more of this if I come across them.
Not only did I fall in love with how well thought out the characters were but the storyline itself was amazing. Each chapter had a picture which gave us a visual of how the author wanted us to see his characters. I respect how much he had to have put into this book. I'm on part two now and I'm excited to start!
I swore off Zombie books because they were getting old, except for another author I love. Then this came up in a short sale. I’m so glad I bought it! The character building is great and the mode of becoming a growler makes sense. The bad guys are easily hated and disgustingly familiar in some cases. If you want to start a new and interesting series, start here!
Ok, wow. Just when you think you can’t see an interesting twist on an old genre - turns out you can! Jumping POVs while the puzzle pieces unfold and connect keeps the chapters short and the action coming. Excited to see what comes next.
You will not put down the book it’s full of twists and turns. Surprisingly, charismatic characters full of life and wonder. Energized with constant action and determined survival instincts.
I didn’t think I could read another story about zombies but I was pleasantly surprised by this book on growlers. It takes you for. The point zero of the plague and has some interesting plots and great characters. A must zombie or growler read.
This first book covers the introduction of the characters and the scenario for the following books to evolve. It has been enough to make me want to read more and I can only hope for a little more to give it a 5 star read rating.
I loved this book so much I immediately bought the rest of them and read then right away! Great characters and storyline. I can't wait for the next one!
