Don Freeman was a painter, printmaker, cartoonist, children's book author, and illustrator. He was born in San Diego, California, attended high school in Missouri, and later moved to New York City where he studied etching with John Sloan. Frequent subjects included Broadway theatre, politics, and the circus. He was also a jazz musician, and the brother of circus entrepreneur Randy Freeman.
A lovely simple story about some crayons drawing a picture. As they draw the story unfolds. I loved the ending! A wonderful turtle character becomes the hero of this story!
A Don Freeman story that should be reprinted! The original format was a small sized book, which makes it a little hard to read in front of a large group of kids. The story is like a blend between Harold & the Purple Crayon and Where the Wild Things Are (without the wild things! The wildest thing in here is a turtle). Chalk colors create an island with a boy and a turtle living on it. Will the boy be able to get off of the island? Great for teaching colors to a preschool group.
