Miffy convinces her parents to take her to an art gallery. It is very exciting, Miffy sees paintings, a mobile and even a stone statue. At the end of the day Miffy decides she wants to be an artist when she's grown up. Award-winning UK poet, Tony Mitton, has worked closely with Dick Bruna's Dutch publisher to create new translations for the classic Miffy stories that are true to the books' original voice, and yet have a contemporary feel to the language that makes them appealing to the modern young audience. The translations beautifully convey the warmth and friendliness of the original Dutch whilst maintaining a style that is inimitably Miffy.
In this Miffy adventure the rabbit family goes to a modern art museum. They see mobiles, paintings and sculptures and even a famous children's author/illustrator! Miffy is inspired by her visist and has decided what she wants to be when she grows up.
Visiting the Tate Modern the other day, we went round Meschac Gaba's installation, which does a better than average job of messing with your mind. One of the many clever ideas is that the library and the gift shop have been made integral parts of the exhibit. Alas, most of the stuff in the gift shop is no longer for sale; apparently it was originally, but people kept buying it. The library contains a bizarre collection, including many children's books in Dutch. (Gaba's wife is from Holland).
I spent a few minutes reading this charming little story in rhymed verse. Guessing rather a lot of the words - my Dutch is really basic - I followed Nijntje, a young rabbit, as he first persuades his parents that he is so old enough to go to the contemporary art exhibition and then argues with them about the various works on display.
"I know what I'm going to do when I grow up!" he says when they get home. "I'm going to be a contemporary artist too!"
I believe it's a series: one more of these, and I could easily become a Nijntje fan.
A thoughtful foray through art interpretation through the eyes of a young rabbit. 1 star deducted for unrealistic representation of children’s behaviour - Miffy was far too well behaved and should have had at least one tantrum. Also I’m concerned about Mr Rabbit’s parenting skills - he initially suggested going to the art gallery without Miffy, presumably leaving her alone in the warren. A bit neglectful.
Bought this at the Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam at the Dick Bruna exhibition. We grew up with the Afrikaans translation of the Miffy books from the local library but cannot remember Miffy's Afrikaans name...
so cute and lovely museum art! the dutch version has all lowercase letters which i prefer for the cuteness. meanwhile the english version has capitalization and punctuation which is definitely not as cute and much less poetic as well
I was feeling nostalgic for the Miffy books after buying myself a Miffy coin purse, and this one is top-tier. Lots of variety in art forms, and a nice approach of introducing small children to art appreciation by thinking about how colors and shapes are used.
