I loved this book! It’s a light and funny story about a guy who’s looking to make a change in his life and do something a bit different. If you’re interested in Cuba there are a lot of funny anecdotes about his time there and all the quirky characters he meets, as well as interesting stories about the strange life people live under one-party socialism. I really enjoyed it and will be re-reading it I’m sure.
Interesting enough, some insight is given into Cuban culture. However the narrator is quite conservative and judgemental despite talking up how brave and daring he is being in Cuba. Lots of use of 'exaggeration for humorous effect' which I can't stand.
I liked the book (when i re read it), primarily since i met Richard Neill when in Santiago de Cuba... it reminded me of my trip to cuba, the musicality of the people.. although chanchan began to infect my head again i had read it originally when i was not in good form and stopped reading it mid way. but 2nd time it was much better and reminded me much more of the place its struggles and life in general
