Great read on the beginnings of the NEA in America, starting with our Founding Fathers up until 1994 when Jane Alexander took over as Director.

I recommend this a reference book on your bookshelf if you're interested in the arts and arts advocacy.

A really great, concise overview of the culture wars, the history of the NEA, all the key players, theories for bettering the US arts system, etc. Policy talk and economic statistics can be dry but I found the writing to make even the "boring" material palatable.
