I’ve been looking for a daily devotional for this year and when the opportunity rose to review this new book from John MacArthur, I snapped it up. I’m glad I did.

Arranged into short daily readings, the book is grouped into monthly themes. January is for Beginnings. February is Love. September is Work. The devotions are taken from other John MacArthur books, but even if you’ve read the source material, having something distilled into one page makes it more memorable and portable, easier to chew on during the day as God brings the reading back to your mind.

Some that I’ve recalled during my day recently:

“But the children of a sinful generation are powerfully affected by the consequences of the sins of a society.”
“A weak and constantly accusing conscience is a spiritual liability, not a strength.” -- I love this whole reading on April 27th titled A Weak Conscience.
“Whenever you elevate good deeds over sound doctrine and true worship, you ruin the works too.”
Just because the readings are fairly short, don’t assume they’re shallow as well. They’re not. Many of them are downright challenging. MacArthur tackles subjects like Sanctification and Justification and God’s Sovereignty.

I highly recommend this book for anyone who is looking for a devotional book that will challenge as well as encourage them in their daily walk.

-- I received a free copy of Moments of Truth from Thomas Nelson Publishers, in return for an impartial review. We both held up our end of the bargain.

This is a very well written devotional, where the author starts each day quoting a Scripture passage and then he develops the main theme for the day in an easy to read and powerful message, finishing with a question that makes us stop and think.
The author is very well known to write many books about the truth as revealed in His Word. An as the introduction states clearly on this book, the messages are excerpts from many of those books.
Each month has a major theme, like beginnings, love, cross and Easter, growing as a Christian, parenting, marriage, work, etc.
I recommend this book for the permanent library of any Christian home for those who want to grow in understanding the truth behind the Word of God. Superb work!

This book was written by John MacArthur and published by Thomas Nelson in January of 2012 and they were kind enough to send me a copy for reviewing through their Thomas Nelson Book Review Bloggers Program.

It’s a good idea to routinely – every day, even – dive into Scripture and meditate on what God has to teach us. It’s amazing how often truths declared in the Bible apply directly to life’s greatest “mysteries.” As someone who’s enjoyed reading John MacArthur’s thoughts on the Bible and life in general (and as one who has something of a collection of daily devotionals), I jumped at the chance to get a combination of the two. And it hasn’t disappointed. This book is a nice collection of easy-to-digest snippets from MacArthur’s writings that help set the tone for each day and provide encouragement to delve deeper into studying God’s Word. I still miss days now and again, but don’t we all?

John MacArthur is a renowned teacher and Bible scholar so it's been interesting to get his perspectives on different subjects like praying for our leaders, a husband's role, a wife's role, sharing the gospel with your children among many other things.
The devotional is intentionally arranged so that when it's Christmas or Easter you are discovering a unique nugget of truth devoted specifically to those special days. If you are looking for a devotional that's just a little different from the norm then you have found it. It's great for a baby christian or someone that has been a christian their whole life. MacArthur gives you a lot to ponder in only a short one page devotional that is a compilation of some of his previously published books .
I give it 5 stars out of 5 stars!
