To rate an educational book like this feels weird. But I really recommend it. I was surprised that I learned far more in the first half than in the last half where it actually discussed more specific moves and tactics. The way the book spelled out some of the most basic moves and rules and limitations of the game oddly opened my eyes and made me see moves and openings in a way I've never thought about before. I play a friend every day on the Chess.com app (highly recommend) and have noticed that I've actually gotten better since reading this book! very good, recommend a lot. If there are any flaws, there were sometimes where I was out and about reading it and it would give entire games in notation form to discuss certain problems. This was helpful in learning how to read notation (which I can now do well) but when I didn't have a board in front of me I would just end up skipping that page. Appreciate the teaching of notation but also could have just had a picture of the situation a few times.
Its pretty alright. Title is a bit excessive. It's more like an introduction and description of some tactics and strategies, as well as explanations/ diagrams of scenarios using algebraic chess notation. Which i refuse to internalize, even though I play chess online every day. Guess I'll never beat Anyone at chess.
I was looking for a resource to make me comfortable playing friends more experienced than me, and this for perfectly. Now am ready to take them on without being embarrassed (I hope!)
Title is a bit misleading- starts from scratch teaching how to play the game, then moves into basic tactics and strategy. Provides good references for other books where more detail can be found. Picked this up after watching/reading Queen’s Gambit.
this was a great beginner book for learning chess and getting familiar with the terminology, pieces, and some strategy. loved that it had illustrations to follow along with a game!
Some aspects of the beginning were very basic if you understand the game but majority of the book allows you to look at the game in a deeper level than just knowing the main object and piece movements. It shows that there is more to the game and encourages you to look down other paths to find what is right for you. As a very casual player of the game, this book improves my skills.
