"I suspect beneath this rough exterior, you are quite the gentleman."

When I chose this ARC, I was actually in the mood for a short spicy read. And what I got instead was incredibly sweet.

Allegra has an exquisite storytelling voice when it comes to narrating this kind of story and I felt completely transported to the setting and the scenes described.

Would definitely recomend to any romantasy lovers in the mood for something sweet and tender!

I received an ARC in exchange of an honest review.

Just could not get into the story. Not bad, just not in the mood for it.

Might give it a second chance later on!

🧐Future Beeg, did you judge this book by its cover and assume he’s a pumpkin who is the leader of other pumpkins in a pumpkin world…?
🧐Don’t recall reading a monster veggie book but I have heard of the potato shifter one.
🧐Vaguely recall some other veg or was it fruit shifter …?

This is a sweet, quick read. Though it's flaws I would read another book from this author. I have read a lot of novellas and most of them have been literally awful but this one is fine, I wanted more, that's my major complaint.

First ... Love the cover. I'm not usually into the half-naked men covers but I actually like this one.
Second ... I personally think the blurb says too much about the book. I didn't read the blurb until after reading the book. The cover and the fact that it was a short read made me read it. And I think the blurb would be catchy enough with just telling about their first meeting. And I thought it was odd it was written in Calen's POV when we don't get to his POV until halfway through the book.
Third... very well written language-wise, but I had a few problems with it hence my notes further down. Other than that the POV sometimes changes from sentence to sentence and at some point goes directly from Calen to Sprigen without an ornamental break or chapter shift.

You often don't know what the surroundings look like hence why the story is so short, but I miss some more details and more close relationship building with other characters. So this book could have been twice as long and twice as good if the flaws had been caught as well. It's hard to write a fantasy as a novella or shorter because there is a lot of world-building needed.

The book is written very formally, maybe too formally for my taste. But maybe it's meant to be a historical romance? But I don't think it's quite clear or maybe I have overlooked something. But as soon as I saw it as a Jane Austin setting it worked fine. So I think if the author had promoted it as a historical-fantasy the reader's brain would have been prepared for the very formal language.

I think the foreword should have been called prologue, it fits it more I think. At least it should have been placed after the copyright.

The pumpkin kings name is Galen? As a fantasy monster I would have hoped for something more creative.

The first pages seemed rushed, like "this has to be a novella so the story has to start right now!"

****Below are the notes I took while reading: Can contain spoilers, but I have jutted down the page number so you can read as far down as you want.****

Page 10, Did he resent the villagers' obvious terror of him (I didn't read it as the villagers were terrified of him. Maybe it hadn't been made clear enough? Because if they were terrified, would they casually enjoy the party as they did?)

Page 21, But there was no mistaking the flickering glow of the carved pumpkin head, its features thrown into dramatic relief by the surrounding darkness. The Pumpkin King had come. (How can she see his dramatic reveal when he has his back turned to her? Further down the same page it says, As if sensing her presence, Galen turned, the flames within his eyes kindling at the sight of her.)

Page 23, Still cradling her cheek, (but it was her who touched his cheek.)

Page 27, bathed in starlight and the glow of the moon's light." (The last "light" Wasn't needed. Two "light" after another made it sound awkward.)

Page 28, "Patience, my pet," he rasped (I felt it was out of character to call her pet. Where did love or beloved go??) (And again on page 30!!!,) "I hope I did not wake you too early, my pet," he rumbled. (It ruins the otherwise sweet heartfelt moment.)

Page 32, Yet so far, they'd carefully avoided any real discussion of what this relationship between a mortal woman and mythical king could become. (So saying "I am yours, my love," "Now and always." Is not basically binding yourself to this person? I would think so.)

Page 35, Now, he was her husband-to-be. (I thought they just made their vows? So it was a vows of engagement? That confused me. Also, she calls him her husband on the same page so.. which is it. And on page 37 it said, When Galen took a mortal bride and married her beneath the great oak,)

Page 35, Maribel couldn't resist one last look over her shoulder into the shadowy woods. (But a paragraph ago the gates were closed behind them. We aren't told if it's a metal gate you can see through or a solid gate.)

Page 40-42, Curious, she crouched down to get a better look. It was a delicate silver ring, set with a modest but beautifully cut emerald. (It's the first and last time a ring is mentioned.)

Page 45, His magic had grown considerably since his banishment. (On page 37 it says that he didn’t had much magic left, Closing his eyes, Sprigen summoned the remnants of his power,)

Page 45, At last, a small hedgehog crept forward. "Your Majesty, we will help you. The queen was kind to us, and we will not forget it." (Did they even know her? We didn't get a scene where we saw them interact. Maybe the book should have been 20 pages longer?)

Chapter 7 (I'm not sure why he needed the forests help. They didn’t seem to do anything and Sprigen wouldn't have attacked them if they weren't with him.)

Page 61, animals, sprites, and sentient plants alike. (Now there's sprites?? Where did they come from. Earlier it was not that specific, I know there was a talking willow, but still, page 45, The animals and creatures shuffled forward,)

Page 63, but...my heart yearns for a child. Our child." (But they haven't used protection? So there will be a baby at some point I gather..)(never mind the answer came on page 64.)

Page 63, "It will be the greatest honor to see you round with our babe." (This is probably a "me problem" but "babe" is a ridiculous word, especially in a setting like this and it should be banned from all romance books because it isn't romantic at all. It is also slang so it doesn't fit the book at all, having been formal written all the way.)

Page 64, on this page Maribel is spelled Mirabel.

Page 76, "Do you like it, Father?" "You look perfect, little sprout." (Little sprout... that's fucking cute!!!!)

🎃The Pumpkin King’s Bride Book Review🎃

I don’t really get the whole premise of this. Basically— Maribel visits an autumnal town during their Halloween Celebration to honor their Pumpkin King- Galen(?).
Maribel and Galen are immediately enthralled by each other for no reason besides: Maribel is someone new to Galen’s eyes and Galen is the King..? Very insta-lovey where both become plainly attracted with the other just because 🤷🏻‍♀️.
And that’s.. that’s really it. They immediately fall in love with eachother and have lots of sex… but wait! A jealous sorcerer tries (in his very half-assed way) to break them apart by pulling the lamest spell, for which an even lamer rescue-operation ensues. And this is where the book makes a very Disney-esque turn. 🙃

Anyway, the language used was easily understandable and almost feels like I’m reading a historical monster romance, which I had no issue with.
The romance was insta-love, which I despise but can’t dock cookie points cuz its literally mentioned in the blurb. However, I dont get the attraction between Maribel and Galen. Was this like a BellaXEdward situation where the love interest is ‘the new girl in town’? Cuz I don’t see the appeal of Maribel. But we move on. Hence the romance was lukewarm. It didn’t captivate me. It was very vanilla. And so was the world.
The author appears to have created a parallel world where monsters and humans co-exist (given that this is part of a series) however, the worldbuild was lacking and half the time idk if humans actually co-exist with the forest creatures??
Anyway, the other pumpkin monster romance I read were better compared to this.

The two main characters in this book, are perfect for each other. Maribel, caring and kind, and Galen, strong and sweet. Both lonely and looking for that missing something, until they meet each other on Halloween night.

Galen is The Pumpkin King and such a teddy bear, I want one! Maribel just moved to town and is like that best friend everyone needs. The characters are very supportive and the book was a fun, quick read. The plot was good, but if you're looking for a lot of action, this falls in the romantic category. It felt like reading the dates they went on. Yes, there was an antagonist and how they battle against it was good, but it wasn't very climactic.

Overall, a great read. For sure was giving October Fall vibes and that relationship everyone loves.

'She had come here seeking adventure, never imagining it would come in the form of Eldridge Hollow's fearsome guardian.'

"You must know, Maribel...this is more than mere attraction. I have lived a thousand harvests, but no one has touched my heart as much as you do... No one has made me feel so seen, so understood."

I absolutely loved this book. It was such a beautiful read. Based on the cover, I expected a dark romance, but this was so much better. I loved Galen and Maribel. They had such a powerful connection. Usually such connections are heated and lustful, but this felt like longing and love and it warmed my heart to read it. There is adversity to this story and it made things exciting. I was hooked to the story. I've read half a dozen of Faedra's books before this one, but this one was without a doubt my favorite. 5 stars.

not what I expected

This was not what I expected. There was more time spent on the cover than the actual writing. It had potential, it really did. But it was inconsistent. The plot was rushed. There is a difference between a quick read and a rushed plot that skips around so much I couldn’t tell if it took place over three days or a year. Another inconsistency was at one point he had a stalk on his head… like an actual pumpkin. (From the cover it wasn’t what I was expecting at all) then in another he had hair… Then the next he didn’t. I don’t know if It was my version as well, but an entire page was repeated. It was hard to even finish this one. I was disappointed to say the least.

New to Eldridge Hollow, Maribel (h) is an awe of the town’s annual Halloween feast, and even more so when the Pumpkin King, Galen (H), arrives at the celebration. The two share a connection with one another that broaches their loneliness, and their feelings deepen for one another with each visit Maribel makes to the Fall Realm where Galen rules. But their joy is broken when an exiled sorcerer curses Maribel to forget her lover and Galen will have to wage a war to get his queen back. Sweet and pumpkin spicy monster-human romantic quickie with a plenty of heat, a dash of magic, and powerful love.

This was a fun and unique Halloween themed romance. Told in dual POV, the chemistry between The Fall King and Maribel was steamy and intense. She may be a human gal, newly moved to Eldridge Hollow, but she loves the tradition of honouring the Fall King. When he shows up to participate in the festivities, she can't get over her fascination for this odd looking but very attractive monster. Her curiosity opens the door for them to start to see much more than the surface and brings about a wonderful HEA. Of course, there's still drama, danger and action, so expect to read this in one sitting ;D

loved it !! a great start for a new series !! love , love, love Galen and Maribel... this is their story..a fast paced shorter drama.. Maribel needed a new beginning.. an adventure.. so, she moved to Elridge Hollow, the next town over... it's the fall festival.. they celebrate differently than her old town.. there's a guardian for their town.. the Pumpkin King... he's unique... and Maribel is intrigued... so , is Galen the Pumpkin King... he's lived a thousand festivals... he's never been intrigued by a human before... so good !!! with a twist.... so good !!!.

Tried to get one last read in before oct 31st was over and I fell asleep. Thought it was going to be cute… it wasn’t. Not for me anyway, the idea was there the execution was not. I skimmed the last like 50 pages but spent enough time reading it that I’m counting it as a book read. Just not for me, I think I liked Hallowpeen better than this. Too much going on and inconsistencies in this one. And okay I didn’t see the “instalove” in the title but yeah didn’t like that. But I guess if you were marathoning short Halloween books this was an okay addition. I mean it will make you appreciate the other choices in the pile better.

"Such fanciful thoughts were foolish, especially regarding a legendary being who likely saw humans as little more than amusing novelties."

This book is classified as Monster Romance, and is book one of a series. It does not have a trigger warning list.

The book is written in third person. This book follows two people: Maribel and Galen. Maribel moved to Elridge Hollow, and lost her memory. Galen is the Pumpkin King and lost his love.

Galen is the pumpkin King who had been protecting the town of Eldridge Hallow but this Halloween night he finds Maribel. Their bond maybe new but both feel instantly connected, until a sorcerers curse takes Maribels memories and Galen will go to any lengths to get them back. Well written engaging paranormal steamy, monster/human romance.

I was drawn in by the title of this book and the cover - I mean, c'mon! Sadly, this book just did not do it for me. I guess I had different hopes for this book as opposed to what it truly was. I was hoping to get something akin to another author's type of work but I got a sweet (too sweet for me) story.

I will applaud A.R. for her ability to write such a cohesive story in like 80 ish pages - it was a great story. Just not what I was hoping for when I saw the words "monster romance" and "high heat". The heat was there technically, but I would not consider it "high heat".

This book wasn't as good as I thought it would be. I thought there was going to be a bit more sexy scenes, but there were just a lot of repetitive thoughts and dialogue between the main characters.

Short and spicy

Galen and Maribel are instantly attracted to each other. But a villain would take away their happiness, a coup that was easily routed. A spicy shorty that is sure to please anyone looking for a good quick read.

I don’t know what I was expecting from this book. And in my opinion this wasn’t very good.

Usually, I tend to love monster romances; and I took a chance on this one since it features a creature (monster) not usually explored in this genre. But what I got was … well Pumpkin spiced jizz. Seriously! 🤢🤮

If you like this sort of story I do not judge, and more power to you. As for me though, this was not it. I did not like it in the slightest. It’s going to be a gigantic NOPE from me!
