The adventures of Herman the Mouse. Who new such a little mouse would become such a big star! This is such a cute story about how a mouse feels having to leave his family at the pet shop being taken away from all that he knows. Will he like his new family? Will they like him? It turns out Herman's no ordinary mouse and is destined for much bigger things.. A really fun read for children.

I originally checked it out as a potential read a loud book for my third grade class. It was an awesome find for both teacher and students. I loved it because it communicated reaching for goals, handling life in new situations, the concept of two identities viewing the same circumstance in completely different ways. And the kids loved it because Herman was no ordinary mouse. He had thoughts and dreams...and he could talk! I place this book on my all time favorites list.

The book Herman the great was one of the coolest books ever. It is about a mouse named Herman. He goes on wild adventures. Herman can talk and is a prize winnning artist. He is also the first mouse to fly in a plane across the United States. My favorite part was when Herman wanted to go to school and learn. Even though Marc his owner didn’t want to loose him as a pet, he wanted to see Herman grow. This shows true friendship. I would definitely recommend this book.

A fun children's story. My siblings loved it when I read it aloud to them. Recommended, if you can find a copy!

I read this when I was about seven, and still think about it all the time. This and Andy Buckram's Tin Men were probably my first-ever experiences loving reading.

This was my first chapter book I read. Thank you, Herman!

3-4-23: I remember liking this book a lot when I was about 5, but at that time I had no other chapter books to compare it to. Forty-nine years later, this book still gets 5 stars from me. The story is fast-paced, diverse, and laugh-aloud funny.

“The Reeds loaded the plane and Merv Beesley’s car with all the things Herman would need—mostly his favorite cheeses.”

He meets a tribe of Native Americans in the Grand Canyon: “That evening the people were all talking about him. ‘Who,‘ they wondered, ‘is that pesky mouse in the red poncho?‘“

“Herman,“ he said to himself, “who is going to save you from all this crazy love?“
