Love finds you when you least expect it…

Marriage Wanted

Weddings were Savannah Charles’s business and she was an expert on marital bliss, but she’d given little thought to her own day of joy. Until divorce attorney Dash Davenport offered a proposal that would benefit them both. Dash claimed he’d never be convinced “I do” could last forever. So when he asked Savannah Charles to marry him, it was out of mutual necessity—not love. Yet he never expected to marry Savannah—the most passionate woman he’d ever tried not to love…

First Comes Marriage

When Zach Thomas merged his business with the Hartman family firm, that was the only Hartman-Thomas merger he wanted. But Janine Hartman’s grandfather had other ideas—ones belonging to a different place, a different time, when marriages were arranged by families. “It would be a perfect match,” he insisted. “You two suit each other.” Zach and Janine didn’t agree. In fact, they agreed on only one thing—that Gramps was a stubborn, meddling old man. But…what if he was right?

First thing I will mention about Under the Summer Sky by Debbie Macomber is that this is not one singular story but two novella length romance stories which are roughly the same length and combined into the one book. Both stories in Under the Summer Sky have different couples on their way to marriage which ties them together while being very different plots.

First we have Marriage Wanted where we meet Savannah Charles who makes a living out of helping others find their way to the alter. Savannah has a new client excited for her wedding but finds the client’s brother, Dash Davenport, is completely against the wedding so Savannah does everything she can to show Dash that marriage is as magical as she believes it to be.

Next in First Comes Marriage Janine Hartman is thrown for a loop when her grandfather introduces her to Zach Thomas. Zach has been preparing to merge his business with Janine’s grandfather’s but her grandfather has his eye on a different merger and suggests to the couple that they marry. Well, Janine of course is completely against an arranged marriage even if it worked for her grandfather back in the day but the more time she spends with Zach planning against her grandfather the closer they become.

Debbie Macomber is an author I’ve read many times before so I will admit to picking this one up without paying attention it being more than one story. Being split into two I was left with my usual novella feel of wanting more to each to get to know the characters better when the story ends so quickly. Pushing that to the side though I’d say I enjoyed Marriage Wanted a bit more than First Comes Marriage with I think the arranged marriage idea just making feel a bit dated or something. Overall I’d give both combined stories three and a half stars having enjoyed them but preferring the authors longer full length novels.

I received an advance copy from the publisher via NetGalley.

I enjoy Debbie Macomber's books and although these two novellas were published earlier, I had never read either one of them. I enjoyed them both, short and sweet.

Marriage Wanted Savannah Charles is a wedding planner. Dash Davenport is a divorce lawyer, and Savannah is planning a small wedding for his sister. He does not want her to get married, but agrees to pay for her wedding, of course that means that he and Savannah will be spending time together. Dash is trying to get a partnership at the law firm he works at, but the partners want to see him settled, so, he and Savannah pretend to be a couple. Savannah has her own issues with marriage. She was in an accident when she was little and has an injury to her leg that still causes issues and pain. She is sure that no one would want to be saddled with her. The fake dating trope is one of my favourites and I enjoyed seeing them fall for one another. When he asks her to marry him, a marriage of convenience, they must reconcile their feelings to decide it they will go ahead with it. A sweet, predictable story that was an easy and enjoyable read.

First Comes Marriage I really enjoyed this story. Janine Hartman was raised by her grandparents after the death of her parents. Now, just her and her grandfather, they live a comfortable life, with him owning a well off business. He recently became partners with Zach Thomas, but that is not the only merger he is looking for. Being raised in Eastern Europe, marriages were arranged, and he has an arranged marriage in mind for Zach and Janine. This story was a hoot. Neither Janine or Zach wants to get married and they are like oil and water when they meet, but Gramps was sure they were perfect for each other. At times, their mercurial interactions were a bit too much, but for the most part, I found them funny. They were both stubborn, independent, careful characters, but they respected one another. I find that when they rubbed each other the wrong way, it was only because they had feelings for the other, but didn't want to admit it. There were a few little twists along the way that helped them finally see that they did have feelings for each other, a bit of romance and a very stubborn gramps to "help them along" all added up to a romance at the end. Of the two, this was the one I preferred, although I liked them both.

Clear skies ahead for Debbie Macomber fans with the upcoming release of #UndertheSummerSky. Featuring couples destined for the alter, the unlikely pairings will delight readers with their shenanigans. While at first glance the couples are drastically different but circumstances and shared desires bring them together.

The stories may seem familiar but don't judge a book by its cover. Sometimes the best stories deserve a second serving. Will they find happiness or remain marriages of convenience. Thank you to #NetGalley and the publisher for the early edition of #UndertheSummerSky in exchange for an honest review. I eagerly awaited the reissue and revisiting familiar characters provides a sizzling summer read.

One Pub Date July 2, 2024. ⭐️⭐️⭐️

Two stories for the price of one in this sweet summer romance that’s perfect for the beach. Easy to pick up and put down. These stories have been previously published in the early 1990s.

Each novella poses a different way to the altar; one a marriage of convenience, the other an arranged marriage. If you enjoy closed door, no heat romances, this is for you. Not a ton of chemistry between the characters and lacking in depth in the story.

Thanks to Harlequin Trade Publishing/Mira Books for this ARC. This is my honest opinion.

Under the Summer Sky is the perfect summer quick read the book has 2 stories both about marriages that begin in an unconventional way.

Marriage Wanted and First Comes Marriage. I found both to be enjoyable reads.
Marriage Wanted involves a wedding planner and a brother of a client who is not in favor of marriage.
Read this one to see if his attitude changes by the end of the story.
First Comes Marriage is a twist on an arranged marriage. Neither person involves is interested. Read this one to see if that changes.
Both stories were fun, quick reads.

Thank you to Net Galley and the publisher for the advance ARC.

This book is divided into 2 different love stories with the theme of marriage.

The first is about Savannah Charles, a wedding planner, who feels undesirable by men because of her limp in her leg, which makes her feel lonely. She believes in marriage and would like to be married one day! When Nash, a client’s grumpy brother and a divorce attorney who doesn’t believe in marriage, comes into her store complaining about his sister, will they be able to settle their differences about marriage? They decide to make a bet, but who will ultimately win in the end? I loved the banter between Savannah and Nash! This made for an entertaining read!

The second story:

When Janine’s grandfather decides to merge his company with Zachary’s company, this forces them to come together for the good of the company! Since Zachary has had a lot of loss, Janine is asked by her grandfather to teach him about love, laughter, and having fun in life. He also informs her that he thinks Zachary will make the best husband for her. In the end, will Janine and Zachary make the perfect couple?

Sometimes you just need that book that is heartfelt, entertaining and fun! This book checks those boxes. Debbie Macomber writes wonderful stories about marriage, love, resiliency and friendships. I love how her characters are relatable and have a sense of humor. I love the banter between the characters, it makes for a fun and entertaining read! A perfect book for your pool/beach bag!

This book is comprised of 2 novellas. I was disappointed with both stories though the second one was a little better. I checked several times as I couldn't believe this was from the Debbie Macomber that I've come to really enjoy. The stories made me angry. The characters in the first story were not likeable at all. The characters in the second one were marginally better. Read my full review at Girl Who Reads.

I've enjoyed Macomber's holiday novels, and found this compilation of two novellas as I looked for a "beach read" while traveling.

First Comes Marriage is a sweet romance where a well-meaning, old-fashioned grandfather, Gramps, plays matchmaker out of concern for the welfare of his only grandchild who he had raised after the death of her parents.

Although well-off financially thanks to her family's business, Janine Hartman is an independent and feisty woman who refuses to go along with Gramps plans to marry her off to Gramp's young business partner, Zach Thomas.

At first, Janine and Zach try to outwith Gramp's attempts by avoiding one another, and then by playing along with the schemes. Although physically attracted from the onset, neither Janine nor Zach see each other as someone they'd want to wed. Arranged marriage, therefore, is not something either one wants. Yet, in time, things change and Janine realizes that maybe, just maybe, Gramps is right after all that marriage comes first, and then love. Written with humor and sensual

****
In Marriage Wanted, Savannah Charles, a wedding planner with a physical disability caused by an accident as a kid, is convinced that she will never find the kind of happiness she hopes that her clients will find through marriage. So, when Dash Davenport, a divorce attorney, shows up to elicit Savannah's help in convincing his sister not to marry, Savannah tries to prove that he is wrong about marriage and his sister's decision.

They begin to see a lot of each other, and their attraction grows. When Dash proposes a marriage of convenience so that he can make partner at his law firm and Savannah's overly protective parents will be free to retire elsewhere, it sounds like a good idea for them. However, Dash and Savannah quickly discover that this kind of marriage will test their convictions and their true feelings for one another. Lovely story written with humor, wit, and insight into the human heart!

Under the Summer Sky is a charming collection of two short novels that serve up a delightful mix of wholesome women's fiction and romance. Both stories are imbued with warmth and a touch of humor, making them perfect for readers who enjoy heartwarming tales with a splash of romantic tension.

"Marriage Wanted"

In Marriage Wanted, the battle of wills between the protagonists drives the narrative. This story explores the classic "opposites attract" trope, pitting two very different characters against each other in a clash of personalities and desires. Their interactions are engaging and filled with playful banter, keeping readers invested in the ongoing struggle to see who will give in first. The resolution is satisfying, as the characters' journey to understanding and compromise is both realistic and rewarding. The eventual union of the couple feels earned, providing a happy and fulfilling conclusion that will leave readers with a smile.

"First Comes Marriage"

The second novel, First Comes Marriage, continues the theme of unexpected pairings with a fresh twist. Here, two individuals who seem worlds apart are brought together by the well-meaning machinations of a meddling uncle. The story excels in building tension and anticipation as the characters navigate their differences and discover common ground. The push and pull between them is handled with skill, creating a compelling dynamic that propels the narrative forward. The gradual realization that their union might be more beneficial than initially thought adds depth and warmth to their relationship, culminating in a satisfying and heartwarming resolution.

Overall, Under the Summer Sky offers a delightful escape into a world where love conquers differences and opposites attract. The novels provide a perfect blend of romance, humor, and emotional depth, making them a wonderful choice for readers seeking light, yet engaging, women's fiction.

***I received an ARC from Net Galley in exchange for my honest review

I was under the misconception this was a new novel, but this is actually two older novels that have been released several times. The first one is Marriage Wanted, and it is about a woman by the name of Savannah Charles who is a wedding planner. A young woman comes to see her to have Savannah help her plan her wedding on a budget and confides that her brother hates weddings, doesn't believe in love, and is against her getting married. He shows up at Savannah's shop later and he & Savannah go head to head trying to make each other see the other person's view. As you will suspect, he ends up falling in love with Savannah & they get married. The second book is called First Comes Marriage, and it is about Janine Hartman’s grandfather passing over the reigns to his Hartman family firm to Zach Thomas, and trying to arrange a marriage between the two. He came from a time and place of arranged marriages and they were not about to be set up, so they were at an impasse.

Book one, although it had a predictable ending, was still enjoyable to read. It was a light-hearted and fun romance, and I liked that the main female protagonist had physical limitations. She was relatable in that she got severe pain episodes and they hindered her daily life. I really had a hard time engaging with any of the characters in the second book. I didn't find any of them relatable, and the story just didn't keep my interest. Overall, this was just not the caliber of work I have come to expect from this author, and I can't recommend this one.

We are treated to two stories about love. The first one is Marriage Wanted. Savannah Charles is in the business of love. She helps couples plan their special day. But when she encounters a bride with a brother who does not believe in love, they are each determined to prove the other wrong. Will they each succeed, or will working together make them have a change of heart? Our second story First Comes Marriage brings us Zach who has merged his business with Mr. Hartman. Mr. Hartman decided that Zach is the perfect match for his granddaughter Janine. The problem is that neither Zach nor Janine are happy with his plan and work together to set him straight. While they are working together on this plan, will it ultimately change their minds? Read further to find out about these two couples.

Debbie Macomber brings us stories about two sets of couples who are on complete sides of love. When marriage enters the equation for them, will it change their minds that they just may be perfect for each other? Or will it just show them what they have known all along?

I have read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own. I would like to thank NetGalley and Harlequin Trade Publishing | MIRA for this privilege.

Unbeknownst to me, Under the Summer Sky is actually two of Debbie Macomber's older novels made into a new release.

First up - Marriage Wanted is a story about a wedding planner, Savannah, who meets a divorce lawyer, Nash, as she's planning his sister's wedding. As a divorce lawyer, he doesn't believe in marriage. Savannah obviously believes in happily ever after and thus, the two spar over whether or not marriages can last. I don't want to give anything away, but I felt their 'agreement' was a bit contrived.

Next up - First Comes Marriage which is a story of a grandfather who believes in arranged marriages and thinks he knows the perfect husband for his granddaughter, Janine. Obviously, Janine has different thoughts on the subject and her grandfather's choice, Zach, is far from ideal in Janine's opinion.

The two stories are quite dated, often using terminology not used in 2024. While I love Debbie Macomber's writing, I'm not a fan of short stories. I would rather enjoy a story that encompasses a novel. That said, one could easily breeze through this book in a day or weekend, so if you're looking for an easy read, pick up Under the Summer Sky.

Thank you to NetGalley for the ARC.

A beautifully written love story for wedding consultant Savannah Charles. Savannah doubts if she will ever have her “happy ever after”. A man’s interest soon fades when he notices her limp and the scars resulting from the horrific injury she suffered as a child. When Susan Davenport enters her bridal shop, Savannah realizes that Susan is on a limited budget and helps her to plan the wedding of her dreams. Susan’s brother, Nash doesn’t approve of the wedding and arrives at the bridal shop expressing his disdain for matrimony. Nash plans to convince Savannah that marriage is outdated, but when he spends time with her, will he decide that just time with her is not enough, will he want forever? In First Comes Marriage, a bonus story, Janine Hartman’s grandfather, Anton, has merged his business with avowed bachelor Zachary Thomas, but why does he continually involve Janine in their meetings? She finds Zachary disagreeable and he doesn’t understand why she only volunteers at a Friendship Club for youth. She enjoys her volunteer time and finds no reason to take a job that someone might truly need. Is there a chance for them or will her grandfather’s meddling keep them apart? I received an advance review copy at no cost and without obligation for an honest review. (paytonpuppy)

Two older novels are combined into this release from Debbie Macomber. Both are clean, closed door romances.

Marriage Wanted (1993), has a wedding planner Savannah and a divorce lawyer Nash sparring over whether marriage can last. This is a cute story and only has a few things that date it. Savannah refers to herself as crippled referring to a limp and scarring from a childhood accident. Nash is told he’d be considered for being made partner if he were married. A few scenes that may be worded differently today doesn’t take away the easy banter and chemistry. Of the two this was my favorite and I like his sister and her parents as supporting characters.

First Comes Marriage (1991) has Zach and Janine who are pushed towards marriage by her meddling and well meaning grandfather. Zach originally is interested in merging their businesses and grandpa has bigger plans. Zach has had a lot of loss and grandpa wants her to teach him about love.

These are fluffy, non complex, romances that can easily be devoured in a few hours. I can’t say I was blown away by either, but they are enjoyable. Debbie Macomber is a very good writer and I’ve given her last two books five stars. It is fun to read books from her earlier days as a writer. Thank you to NetGalley and Harlequin Trade Publishing (MIRA) for the ARC and I am leaving an honest review.

Debbie Macomber is one of my favorite authors. Good old fashioned love stories with no sex and violence. This book has two shorter stories. Marriage Wanted and First comes Marriage.

*MILD SPOILERS BELOW*

MARRIAGE WANTED REVIEW:

Cute, short read you can get done in a day. This story is definitely not a slow burn, I would have expected with the dynamic of this couple to have been way too prideful and stubborn to sucuumb to their urges so quickly. A point that I wish was addressed by the end was that Savannah should have greatly improved her self-esteem. It’s beyond disheartening that she couldn't attest to her genuine worth as a woman. Beyond that, I suggest you read this two-story book on your next weekend trip.

FIRST COMES MARRIAGE REVIEW:

This story is even shorter than the first, and naturally, can be read in a day. There is no legitimate struggle between Zach and Janice, so there’s less build-up compared to the first story. I felt that Janice was written to be a little too presumptuous early on. So, I definitely felt like the character should have known her love interest longer before characterizing him so quickly. Also, the author seemingly forgot that Janice has blond hair. Beyond Gramps, I found the first story to have offered a more enticing plotline. Either way, I still advise this two-story book be taken on your next weekend trip.

Because sometimes you need a little Debbie Macomber in your life! I've been reading a bit too many "heavy" books lately. So just like a little sorbet between courses, I enjoyed Debbie Macomber's two novellas in Under the Summer Sky. Yes, rather predictable ... but sometimes that's exactly what one needs. I have MANY books downloaded to be read, but this one went to the top of the list.

Both stories are reprinted and originally published in 1991 and 1993 by Harlequin Romance.

Many thanks to Debbie Macomber, NetGalley and Harlequin Romance/MIRA for approving my request to review the advance review copy of Under the Summer Sky in exchange for an honest review. Expected publication date is July 2024. 362 pages. Not sure if i had read these stories previously, if I had ... I didn't remember the details. Definitely before I started keeping track on GoodReads. Somewhere between 4 & 5 stars, rounding up because ... well ... its Debbie Macomber. Ever subscribe to her newsletters? Love them. And if you send her an email, she sends a reply. Love her!

I enjoyed both books, but I liked Nash and Savannah’s story better. He was adamant that marriage wasn’t for him, due to his previous relationship ending horribly. She was a wedding planner. When they made a bet to prove the other wrong, they end up getting more than they bargained for. Their relationship is believable and their chemistry is fantastic. They bring out the best in each other.
Zach and Janine were a good story as well, but I got tired of one or both of them saying the same thing over and over again. An arranged marriage isn’t ‘normal’ anymore, and that is exactly what her grandpa did. He tried to arrange their marriage. They were good together, when they weren’t bickering, but the constant reminder that neither one believed what her grandpa was saying or believing about them was monotonous.

Overall, I enjoyed these books, and maybe if they were longer, more could have gone into them and I would have liked them more. I received an ARC and this is my honest, voluntary review.

Two sweet romances. One is a marriage of convenience, and the other is an arranged marriage. Savannah thinks she will never find someone who will want to marry her and have a family. She thinks she is defective because of an accident she had as a child. Her parents are afraid to leave her to go traveling and she is desperate for them be able to go and leave her. Nash is looking at becoming a partner in his law firm, but the partners think he needs to be married. It seemed best for both of them to have a marriage of convenience. Can it turn into a real marriage?
Janine's grandfather is getting up there in years and has plans to retire. He is giving control of his company to Zach, and he also wants Janine to marry Zach. Janine and Zach are not particularly happy about an arranged marriage, but her grandfather doesn't see anything wrong with that. After being thrown together a few times, they decide to give it a try. Can they find a lasting happiness together and make her grandfather happy too?

As a huge Debbie Macomber fan (despite being much younger than her demographic at 25), I was excited to see she had a new release out. However, it took me a minute to see that this book is just two stories from several years ago repackaged in a new edition, however I am not quite sure what years these books were orignially published. The cover made me think it was a brand-new romance novel. Anyhow, these were stories I had read a few years ago (Marriage Wanted and First Comes Marriage) and really enjoyed them when I did read them, so it was nice to revisit them.
5 stars of course!!

Read if you like Elin Hildebrand, Nancy Thayer, Mary Kay Andrews

Under the Southern Sky is a book with two of the author's older short stories. I don't usually like her older books and these two were just ok. Both books are romances with little depth to the plots. The characters were not developed and were all difficult to like or care about.

Marriage Wanted
Savannah owns a bridal salon and believes in happily ever after for her clients but knows that no one will want to marry her due to her disability. Along comes Dash, a divorce attorney who doesn't believe in marriage at all. They disagree over their different views and when he asks Savannah to marry him it is to keep his job and not because he loves her.

First Comes Marriage
Zach merged his business with the Hartman family business. When he first meets the granddaughter of the family, he doesn't think much of Janine. Her grandfather wants to arrange a marriage between them - after all it worked in the old country! They don't agree with her grandfather and fight to cancel his plans. But will her grandfather have the best idea?

The book contains two stories.
Marriage Wanted: Savannah Charles runs a bridal business she is working with a new client whose brother is a lawyer who doesn't believe in the HEA. Dash Davenport shows up at her shop and is trying to find out info on his sister's upcoming wedding. He challenges Savannah on if there is really a HEA. As they strike sparks off each other can they learn to trust each other and open up to a HEA of their own.
Frist Comes Marriage: Zach Thomas has merged his business with Janine Hartman's grandfathers' business. Gramps is old school and thinks that the young couple should get married; after all he had an arranged marriage that worked out. Zach isn't interested in marriage to anyone, and Janine is a little gun shy after her last boyfriend. Gramps keeps throwing them together; can they open up to a marriage?

The author has given her readers two unconventional stories with unlikely characters that you would ever expect to fall in love.

In ‘Marriage Wanted’ a wedding planner and a divorce lawyer each try to convince the other that their thoughts on marriage are the only correct ones.

In ‘First Comes Marriage’ a woman unlucky in love and a workaholic man are matched up by her grandfather that believes that an arranged marriage is the best way to fall in love.

Two quick enjoyable stories that are sure to delight the many readers of Debbie Macomber and new readers too.

This book is actually two stories in one, some of the author's earlier novellas (90s era, I believe). Both of the stories center around unlikely couples and marriage. They are lighthearted, clean, closed door romances perfect for a day at the beach. While the first story was a bit predictable, I still liked the characters and the sweet storyline. I didn't really connect with the characters in the second book and wasn't really sure why they went along with the arranged marriage. I never really felt like they belonged together even at the end

Thank you @netgalley and @htpbooks for the opportunity to read and review this eARC.

This book combines two stories by Debbie Macomber - Marriage Wanted and First Comes Marriage. These are not the typical romance novels I’d pick up, but on impulse I grabbed Under the Summer Sky.

These two stories were a nice change of pace from what I’m used to. The stories were sweet and wholesome and a breath of fresh air. The characters were filled with love and easy to fall in love with as a reader. If you don’t believe in love, I challenge you to read these stories and continue feeling that way. Love conquers all.

If you're looking for a quick beach read featuring two happily ever after stories, this is your book. The stories are from the 1990s and read that way, especially the second story in which a guy in at a law firm is told he would have a better chance of making partner if he were married. Ouch.

But overall, these are fluffy, feel-good stories that will go well with crashing waves and fruity drinks.

Family friendly.

Thanks to Netgalley and Harlequin. I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.

Normally I enjoy anything Debbie Macomber writes! But I admit, I struggled with this...
Under a Summer Sky is a combo of 2 older books coming together under one new title. But for me, the stories never really came together. Each is more like a novella but the first one felt rushed and unrealistic. And I just could never even really get into the 2nd story. I was really looking forward to this book, kind of a pallet cleansing, light summer read. I'm so sad to say it just didn't work for me but, maybe it will for you 🤷

Two novels in one book! Debbie Macomber is a wonderful author and I’ve enjoyed all of her books over the years.
Marriage Wanted - loved this sweet romance! Well-developed plot and characters and a joy to read.
First Comes Marriage - a feel good matchmaking romance with humor that I enjoyed.
I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.

I didn’t realize these were older books being released together.
The first one was good. The characters were hard to relate to but it did have a good story. I didn’t finish the second one.
I usually love Debbie’s books maybe these didn’t click because they are such older books.
Thank you netgalley for the arc.

Under the Summer Sky is 2 mini romances, Marriage Wanted and First Comes Marriage. Both are quick reads, perfect for a day at the beach or the pool. Both stories show that love is found when you are not expecting it. Heartfelt stories that just make you smile while you read.

I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own. This review is based on an ARC from NetGalley, courtesy of the publisher.
