In a Nutshell: A graphic novel depicting one day in the life of a French family, the day after Princess Diana’s death. Clever use of the tragedy without milking it for melodrama. Excellent writing with many poignant moments. Slice-of-life in the best possible way. Great illustrations. Much recommended.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Plot Preview:
One day after Princess Diana’s death. Eight-year-old Lulu loves playing with his dolls, putting on his mom’s lipstick, and enacting fairy tales with his best friend Yoyo, even dreaming of kissing Yoyo after a fairy tale rescue. Lulu’s elder sister Cam has a secret older boyfriend sneaking into her bedroom at night, unknown to anyone else except Lulu. Their mother is waiting for their father, who didn’t come home the previous night. When he finally comes, they realise that something needs to change.
We see this day from the perspective of the three key characters: Lulu, Cam, and their mother.
This book was originally published in French in 2022 under the title ‘Toutes les princesses meurent après minuit.’ This English version was published in 2024.
Looking at the above preview, you might wonder how it fits in with the international tragedy being reported on TV. The hint is in the title. Initially, it does seem like Princess Diana’s death has nothing to do with what’s happening in Lulu’s family. As the story proceeds, we realise that it is not just about the actual princess who died in that tunnel at dawn, but three more metaphorical princesses who realise that life isn't as straightforward as they thought it would be. The title is figurative, and apt for the book, though you will realise this only once you complete the story.
This is a story with many layers, so I don’t want to spoil anything by delving into the plot. All I’ll say is that I am super-impressed by how the author managed to incorporate so many themes into the story without making it feel overburdened or preachy. As it takes place on a single day, a lot of the content is implicit, and it is up to us to decipher the clues. Though it is a family drama, it focusses more on internal conflicts than external mudslinging, and in several panels, the characters’ expressions are all we have to interpret their emotions.
The story also contains a few songs that have a significant role to play in the characters’ emotions. I knew only one of the songs, but luckily, the text includes the relevant lyrics. Thus, even without knowing the tune, we can see the poetic impact of the lyric and how it corresponds to the character’s state of mind at that time.
The three characters whose perspective we see are varied enough to keep the proceedings interesting. Lulu will win your heart easily as a major chunk of the narrative focusses on him, but even his sister and his mother have well-defined personalities. Each of their tracks has a love story at a different relationship stage, and as with all love stories, each involves heartbreak.
The illustrations are brilliant, both in terms of sketching and colouring. Using a watercolour style with a crayon effect for the artwork was the right decision. There is a lot of fluidity in the plot and in the characters as well, plus there are actual scenes with water. This artistic choice ensures that the plot and the graphics complement each other thoroughly.
The author’s parting note of thanks to fairytale princesses – Disney and real – was the most touching and apt ending. It gave me the feeling that at least a part of this book might have been based on actual incidents in the author’s life, but I am not too sure about this.
Overall, this is a beautiful and bittersweet story with some memorable characters and intricate storytelling. Slice-of-life is a tricky style to execute, but this book handles it quite well. I am not usually a fan of this style, but this time, colour me impressed!
Definitely recommended to graphic novel enthusiasts looking for a literary kind of graphic experience with a poignant and layered storyline.
4.25 stars.
Comme toujours une CLAQUE de la part de Quentin Zuttion. J’ai adoré celui-ci, c’était doux et ça prolongeait encore un peu l’été. Les couleurs utilisées sont magnifiques, les dessins sublimes.
On suit dans ce livre le portrait amoureux d’une famille, qui va complètement basculer le temps d’une soirée. Les premiers amours et la différence de Lulu, la réappropriation de son corps avec Cam et la fin de la passion avec leur mère.
J’ai adoré le personnage de Lulu, il m’a vraiment ému avec sa sensibilité, son t-shirt sur la tête et ses princesses.
Ça m’a fait plaisir à la fin, de voir cette famille unie comme ça.
J’aurais aimé encore plus de pages dans ce roman graphique pour qu’on en sache d’avantage sur les personnages, mais c’est ça qui est beau, c’est d’avoir un bout de leur vie. Et c’est magnifiquement bien fait.
Grandes tristesses pour petit garçon. Les jeux d'été, les coups de soleil, les musiques à la radio, les histoires qu'on s'inventent et celles qui sont bien trop vraies.
Gros gros coup de coeur pour cette BD douce amère sur une famille comme tant d'autres avec un petit garçon qui cherche sa place. L'amertume des derniers jours de vacances mêlée aux premières découvertes amoureuses 🥲♥️
El verano está a punto de terminar y, en una casa, los miembros de una familia se enfrentan a distintos momentos decisivos en el ámbito de lo amoroso: la madre empieza a asumir que el padre la va a dejar, la hija adolescente se siente presionada por su amor de verano para hacer el amor por primera vez y el hijo pequeño, un niño que juega con muñecas, empieza a entender que lo que siente por su vecino no es lo habitual.
Este cómic tiene un estilo narrativo muy francés y, aunque creo que la historia se resuelve forma precipitada (me hubiese gustado saber mucho más del proceso), visualmente es una auténtica delicia. La gama cromática, la expresión de los personajes, la forma en la que plasma las distintas horas del día… todo el conjunto hace que este libro sea una auténtica delicia visual.
Princess Diana has just died, and Lulu's mother has the radio on to catch the details. Lulu is more interested in the lives of other princesses—his dolls, and the princess he dreams of becoming. His sister is dating an older boy, his parents' marriage is crumbling, and he only knows how to express his own dreams of romance through games of imagination, through child's play. By the time 24 hours have passed in this beautifully illustrated graphic novel, each family member has seen his or her own small drama play out—for better and for worse.
One benefit of graphic novels is that a quick Google can give you a sense of whether or not an illustrator's style is to your taste, and I knew immediately that I'd like Zuttion's dreamy style. The use of water and light, in particular, are gorgeous. Most of this graphic novel is grounded in reality, but there's a wordless, full-page panel early on, where Lulu is rescuing his drowned dolls from the pool, that looks to me like a standalone print. Dappled sunlight, firelight, and the ripples and splashes of the pastel pool play throughout the piece, and I want to live in Lulu's imagination, with his princesses and dragons. (Some time later, the sun beats down on one side of the house while a tempest rages on the other side—it makes sense in context—and I laughed out loud.)
The book takes place over one day, and the slices of each character's story that we get are calibrated for that—the plot doesn't bite off more than it can chew. This is complete as it is, and doesn't need a sequel, but...I'd love to see/read a longer span of these characters' lives, see how they grow and change with a bit more time. Maybe someday a follow-up with a day in Lulu's life as a young adult...? I can hope.
c'était très cute et très touchant
cette bd marquera à jamais le moment où j'ai découvert que l'auteur s'appelait Quentin Zuttion et pas Quentin Zuitton
la comparaison est affreuse mais ya quelques semaines je suis retombée chez mes parents sur "une sœur" de Vives, et j'ai été franchement assez horrifiée de ce que j'ai lu. en lisant "toutes les princesses meurent apres minuit" je me suis dit que c'était bien la preuve qu'on peut traiter les premiers émois adolescent et la langueur de la fin d'été sans être une grosse merde misogyne et pedo
A bitter sweet read about the difficulties threed members of the same family face.
The mother has to deal with a loveless marriage, a fact that she tries to hide from her children by making excuses for their fathers absence. Despite hurting from the way he treats her, her biggest concern is her kids and him breaking their heart by abandoning the family.
The oldest daughter faces teen problems, involving isolation from her friends as she meets a new secret boyfriend who she is convinced she is in love with. A love questioned by his attempts to force her into sleeping with him.
And finally we have the youngest son. His struggles revolve around being gay and seeking to express himself in a feminine manner, yet getting ridiculed for it from his best friend.
The ending was really sweet however I can't rate this higher due to finding it lacking when it came to depecting these issues for the actual saddening and life changing events that they are.
Aquí les dejo mi opinión más amplia de esta novela :
https://youtu.be/FmzdSDjhdAE?si=G1Y_e...
Sublime novela gráfica. Que mueve los adentros, te llena de sentimientos bellos y melancólicos. Y trata temas muy duros como el divorcio, el primer amor no correspondido y por supuesto la diversidad de género en un niño de 8 años que su sueño es ser princesa y tener a su príncipe a un lado suyo.
El final triste y real.
31 août 1997. Pavillon de banlieue. Lulu, petit garçon de 8 ans, se maquille secrètement dans la salle de bain. Cam, sa grande sœur en pleine adolescence, essaie de cacher son petit ami qui a passé la nuit dans sa chambre. Dans la cuisine leur maman prépare le petit déjeuner, s'interrogeant sur son couple, hier soir son mari n'est pas rentré.
31 août 1997. À la télévision on annonce la mort de Lady Diana.
31 août 1997. Je me souviens de cette journée. C'est mon dixième anniversaire. Et la princesse de Galles s'éteint. Alors forcément quand j'ai feuilleté la bande dessinée aux @mysterieuselibrairienantaise
je n'ai pas su résister, elle a immédiatement trouvé un écho dans mon histoire personnelle.
Quentin Zuttion livre ici une œuvre lumineuse et bouleversante, qui touche presque au sublime. La narration s'étire le long de cette dernière journée d'août, dans la moiteur d'un été qui touche à sa fin, et la langueur des derniers jours de vacances.
Presque comme un huis clos où l'on sent monter la tension, on suit la vie d'une famille qui se cherche à tâtons. On rentre dans leur intimité la plus profonde et secrète, on se fait le témoin de leurs questionnements et quêtes d'identité et on assiste à une très jolie tranche de vie où l'amour, naissant, résistant au temps ou qui s'effrite, inné ou acquis, est au coeur de toutes les préoccupations.
Quentin Zuttion transcende son propos par un coup de crayon poétique et délicat. Tout en nuances de pastels. Et parfois evanescent, comme le souvenir de cette journée là.
Petit coup de coeur 🤍
Thank you to Netgalley for providing an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
This packed an emotional punch that I was not expecting. All Princesses Die Before Dawn is a slice of life graphic novel that follows three inter-connected, yet separate stories. We get Lulu, Cam, and their mother and all three stories just hit you right in the feels.
Lulu is eight and already knows that he's gay. He likes playing with his sister's old Princess dolls and wearing his mother's lipstick when she isn't looking. He also likes to play princess with his best friend Yoyo. Yoyo - Whew. I can't say that I liked him very much. Honestly, he was a brat and Lulu deserves so much better than him, either as an eventual love interest (if they get aged up and this story continues) or as a friend.
Cam is going into high school and is seeing an older boy. Said older boy only wants one thing: which Cam doesn't consent to. Of course, he leaves in a huff and says she's not worth it. But Cam is a great older sister to Lulu and she deserves someone better than whoever that dude was.
And then, their mom. She might have been named, and if she was I forgot it, but her and her husband are going through a rough patch. He decides he's going to pack up and leave her and his kids behind (what a freakin' loser) and honestly, this family is better without him. The few ending pages were so happy and bright and hopeful, I loved everything about the three of them together.
Zuttion's story and artwork were absolutely beautiful and I can't wait to see what comes next!
Le temps d’une chaude journée d’été, une famille passe son temps de façon ordinaire. Et pourtant, beaucoup de choses vont changer. Un petit garçon en pleine recherche identitaire, se rend sur le chemin de l’acceptation. Une ado grandit, peut-être un peu vite. Des parents cherchent les bonnes paroles. Le tout sur fond musical fin des années 90, le jour de la mort de Lady Di. Comme toujours avec Quentin Zuttion, son histoire et ses dessins sont d’une douceur incroyable et remplis d’émotions. C’est un véritable don qu’il a pour partager cette palette de sentiments et de nous les retranscrire aussi bien. Fortement autobiographique, cet album nous replonge à la fin des années 90 et à ces périodes de grands questionnements. C’est très beau 💛
This was exceptional. I wasn't expecting much I didn't really have any expectations but any book that makes me cry is a winner for me.
So this book is a translated work and it takes place over a single day in 1997. The day that princess Diana died and it revolves around this family; the mom, the daughter, and the son.
They all have their own princess stories / fairy tale / romances that play out over this day and you learn the outcomes of all three.
The mom is in an unhappy marriage, the daughter is in a relationship with an older boy, and the son is in love with his best friend, who is also a boy.
With a title like All Princesses Die Before Dawn you know it's going to hurt. And it does. But it also is so healing at the end.
This is a short graphic novel, at 150 pages, but it was really well done. I really loved the art style and I loved the story. I appreciated the music references and the Italian with princess Diana.
I do feel like just from reading other people's reviews that the concept of being a princess has really gone right over people's heads. It seems like people are forgetting that this is 1997 and things that would be cringy to us now in 2023 or the norm. It feels very odd to me to see readers critique a book for stylistic choices like that when technically speaking this would be considered a historical fiction.
This book also uses the f-slur and as a queer person I'm always uncomfy seeing it, but please remember that this book is written by a queer man and a lot of the story is based on his own experience. So I'm going to include it as a content warning but it wasn't problematic for me.
Pretty sure this is a read now on NetGalley and I definitely recommend it!
Encore une belle BD dont j'avais entendu beaucoup de bien, et qui ne m'a pas déçue !
En une journée, et dans le huis clos d'une maison pavillonnaire, on suit quatre membres d'une famille : le père, la mère, la grande sœur et le petit frère. Le premier est démissionnaire, la deuxième attend et ronge son frein, la troisième prend le soleil et brûle d'amour, et le dernier passe son temps à s'inventer des jeux tout en rêvant d'embrasser son voisin et camarade de classe. En fond, la mort de Lady Di est en boucle à la télévision.
J'ai beaucoup aimé l'ambiance des années 90, les poupées Disney partout, la relation frère/sœur hyper réaliste et la tension entre les personnages. Les dessins sont très beaux, surtout les scènes de jeu fantasmées qui prennent vie : avec trois fois rien, les deux garçons s'inventent un monde incroyable et on y est, avec eux.
La fin est très touchante, car même si la tristesse prend le dessus, un petit cocon se forme : "nous contre le reste du monde".
I received an ARC and I’m leaving an honest review.
It’s a very short comic. I really liked the art style but the story was just okay.
Lulu is gay and his friend uses the f slur against him, which I should have expected to see. But I still don’t like it nonetheless.
The synopsis said Cam had an older boyfriend but the age difference made me uncomfortable (he mentioned going to back to campus so I’m assuming he’s in university, and she just finished middle school and is now starting highschool. I don’t know how old someone is when starting highschool in France, but whatever age it is will still be too young for that guy. He even used the typical “you’re more mature than girls your age” phrase.)
I didn't really understand how Princess Diana fit into the story, what she added to the plot (but maybe I'm just dumb and I didn't get it - it might just be me), but I still liked that she was included.
I did like the final few pages with just the three of them being happy without the deadbeat father.
I think my actual rating is more like 2.5/2.75 stars.
Edit: someone mentioned that Cam finding an older boyfriend and Lulu being a "brat" were supposed to be because they are rebelling because the father is absent, but I think that if that was really the aim of the whole story, then it failed to deliver. To me it didn't feel like that. It felt like normal kids doing kid things (not specifically related to a reason). The only scene that could hint at that is the jealousy scene with Lulu and his friend and father, but even that could be normal behavior in my opinion (It's obviously worse if the father is usually not paying attention to his son, but every kid will probably get jealous seeing their father being close with their friends)
I’d like to thank NetGalley and anyone else who was involved in the making of this wonderful manga.
This manga was such a sweet one that dove into sone deep topics such as family, love and finding your self. It deals with ones appearance and ones reality and how one family which seems so perfect, contains people who are each struggling in a different way but at the end reach out for each other and find their own happiness together while finding their true self. It was very heartwarming and knowing that the author based it off of their own events makes it more meaningful and special.
I would definitely reread this manga again and I most definitely recommend it.
-A slice of life that could speak to everyone. We meet Lulu, who wants to be allowed to be a princess, his sister who experiences teenage love and their parents who are separating. We follow their lives during the same summer day that is decisive for each of them for different reasons.
-The graphic design is amazing, the story itself is a bit simple even if it hides some heavier elements. This book could have used a few more pages to better address them.
-I also really enjoyed reading a book set in France, it's something I would like to do more often
31 Ağustos 1997. Lady Diana'nın hayatını kaybettiğine dair haberlerin arka planda sürekli duyulduğu bir ailenin yaşantısına konuk oluyoruz. 8 yaşındaki Lulu, arkadaşı Yoyo ile geçirdiği vakitlerde yaşadığı duygunun ne olduğunu anlamlandırmaya çalışırken, ablası Cam ise, büyüme sancısı içerisinde erkek arkadaşıyla olan ilişkisinin seyrini belirlemeye çalışmaktadır. Ebeveynleri ise, 19 yılın sonunda artık boşanmanın eşiğinde olan bir çifttir.
Zuttion, bir ailenin tüm fertleri üzerinden sevgi/aşk/sorumluluk gibi kavramları tartışmaya açıyor.
Toujours une grande fan de Quentin Zuttion ça bouge pas 🙂‍↕️
J'ai beaucoup aimé la façon donc ce récit parle de l'amour en tout genre : la découverte de soi pour un jeune garçon, le début des relations avec les garçons pour une ado et toute la pression sociale qui vient avec, la fin d'un amour/d'une relation de longue durée dans un couple en ménage, l'amour familial aussi. C'était très doux, très bittersweet. Et puis les dessins, je suis toujours très fan comme d'habitude.
Par contre le mec de Cam, je te déteste sale groomer va 🤨
J’ai aaaaaadoré, l’histoire est tellement touchante. J’ai trop aimé suivre ces 3 personnages dans leurs histoires d’amour à 3 âges différents. C’est écrit avec beaucoup de tendresse pour les personnages. Le fait que tout se passe en quelques heures est très agréable. On a devant nos yeux une petite tranche de vie de cette famille.
If this had been just a little bit longer, and if it didn't brush over the homophobic slur and the situation with Cam and her older "boyfriend" so quickly, this would've been a 5 star read for me.
I fell in love with Zuttion's art style and the way it conjures up melancholy so perfectly. Lulu is a cutie, and his sibling relationship with Cam is very realistic and moving. 💗
Après le coup de cœur du « Salon de beauté », j’ai décidé de lire d’autres œuvres de Quentin Zuttion… nouveau coup de cœur ! C’est moins dur, moins fracassant, mais tout aussi poétique. J’adore les dessins et cette façon de jouer avec les images et les paroles des chansons. C’est doux, comme une journée d’été… mais les thématiques abordées sont importantes et touchantes.
With a title like All Princesses Die Before Dawn you know that you will be getting a story that will hurt you. And you hope it’s in a good way, but you kind of also know it will be in a bad way too. The story is told over the course of an evening, with stories of blossoming and fading feelings told from the perspective of the youngest child, a teenage girl, and their mother, all on the day of Princess Diana’s death in 1997.
First off the art style absolutely enhances the gut wrenching stories being told - of budding feelings of unreciprocated love, of paths diverging, of being taken advantage of, or of falling out of love. This is a story to take your time with, to let it sit with you, for queer folks and folks from homes of divorce, this will hit hard so take care, but I also think that the author wraps up the story beautifully in a show of love and acceptance between our three protagonists despite all the pain they’ve been through.
Beautiful art & heartbreaking stories, what more could you want?
Thank you to Netgalley and the publishers for an advance review copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.
This book felt like a dream. The art was so ethereal and perfectly captured that feeling of a hot summer day.
With that said, there’s a lot of sadness in this book. A family dynamic that’s falling apart, a first love and a boy coming to terms with his sexuality. In a shorter graphic novel, this meant that it all felt like it had some loose ends. The impact wasn’t as great as it could be.
This is just a glimpse into this family’s life and I wanted something a little more. But it was still a beautiful story and the integration of music into the story really added to the immersive feel.
