I love MOC romances but they usually have ridiculous plots. This one is contrived of course but she acts just as you would expect a shy, reserved girl who marries a rich, sophisticated older man she scarcely knows.

I do wonder at all the romance heroines who try to keep him from guessing that she loves him. It’s cowardly and foolish, but we would not have much to read if all the heroines were wise.

I would have liked this a lot better if there hadn't been so much focus on tennis (AD NAUSEUM) and the H's kid sister (the tennis whiz kid) and more on the H and h, where it belonged. They had hardly any time together. in fact, he was with the OW and she with the OM more than they were with each other.

For one of those "marriage of conveniences that turn to love" stories to work, the H and h have to have more time together than these two did, otherwise it doesn't ring true.

The OW having some sort of mental breakdown was supposed to be a way of seeing her as something other than a self-centered, entitled bitch, but the sympathy plea didn't work. And the OM being a nice guy with a White Knight complex doesn't excuse him from making it so obvious he was waiting in the wings for the h's marriage to break up (despite knowing she loved the H and never lead him on to think he was more than a friend/tennis instructor).

Yes, tennis again! And again!! AND AGAIN!!!! When the H and h reunite after weeks apart, it's at a tennis match (naturally)!

I'm surprised they made love in their bedroom and not on the tennis court!

Too annoying to get more than two stars.

Five stars because the trope delivered as it should. There is chemistry & angst between them. He was obviously smitten, so was she. I only wish there was more of them together. It seems like he was always away, but it’s a well-done MOC romance as far as these book goes.

So much potential in this story. It started out great. A good set up, miscommunications, the mean ex-fiance trying to get the guy back for spite. I had high hopes. But, the characters just got on my nerves. I couldn't like the Hero because of his mood-swings (he left his new wife for 4 months then comes back to "woo" her by getting mad at her all the time). The heroine was too dense to be real and would jump to conclusions at everything he said. Still, I read on hoping it would get better. Nope. The end was a big disappointment. The whole book was building to a big confrontation and the author just skimmed through it. It was like she suddenly decided that she wanted to stop writing so she ended it as quickly as possible. We didn't even get to see the Hero tell her he loves her (she writes he murmers words of love in her ear). It would have better as a first draft, not the finished product.

Great premise even if not too original in this ? first published romance about an h who agrees to stand in for her awful friend who jilted the H just prior to the wedding. One of my favorite tropes. He proposes an MOC to save her dear younger brother and she saves him from embarrassment (or so she is led to believe). Similarities to another favorite book, Substitute Bride by Margaret Pargeter. Very satisfying romance and character development with OW/OM drama that never overshadows the MC by-play. Lots of tension and chemistry that keeps the angst at a doable level. Alos had a lot of H/h interactions and we got to see them both fall in love---a keeper!
