The Reality of Us

Rate this book
Never let the truth get in the way of a good story.
That’s a life lesson Alice Aspinall, a reality TV starlet trapped in a fake marriage, has learnt the hard way. When her carefully curated life explodes, she flees to the small town of Wattle Junction. Trying to reinvent herself—again—while learning to stand on her own two feet is complicated and so are her feelings for her hot, new lawyer.

Owen James is a helper, despite what people say about his serious personality. He’s recently moved home to set up his law firm with a focus on making sure everyone who needs legal advice gets it. Think of him as Legal Aid … but with better biceps, two mortgages and a conscience that keeps him up at night. Another thing stealing his sleep? The sparkly, pretty newcomer who drives him up the wall while constantly surprising him.

As Alice and Owen’s attraction heats up and they get to know each other—and themselves—will they be able to see the reality right in front of them? Or will they remain blind to the truth?

** Happy publication day **

A 5 star debut novel is hard to come by but I must say I'm not surprised how incredible this was after reading Wattle It Be?.

The Reality of Us had so many things I loved, especially the FMC's personal growth, the friendships and family, and the small town vibes were just everything. Add to that rescue dogs, an adopted puppy, charities, adventure races - amazing!

It was heart-warming, funny, swoony and spicy at times. The connection between the love interests was 👌 and developed at a perfect pace imo.

--
Alice is a city girl who has ended up in the small town of Wattle Junction after her car dies when she's escaping disastrous issues with her soon to be ex.

Owen has just moved back home, back to family (and omg his mum, Lulu, is one of my favourite side characters ever 🥰). He is starting his own law firm to escape the powers that be in a bigger firm so he can work on his terms and do the right thing.

He is soon engaged to act for Alice as her divorce lawyer...

Side bar. Owen's story impressed me. It's very rare I get to see my profession painted in a positive light. Owen is an amazing MMC: kind, sweet and generous, including generous with his time & it is true, there are lawyers who will give up their time for free to help.

--

I highly recommend checking this one out, it's so sweet and I think bound to make everyone smile and laugh, and maybe get a bit of water in your eyes (of the happiness kind).

Thank you to the author for my eARC in exchange for an honest review.

I love an Aussie romance read!

I loved the small-town of Wattle Junction with its quirky characters and community spirit.

I enjoyed the opposites-attract connection between the colourful and fun Alice, and the traditional yet stoic Owen.

I am keen to read more fabulous stories from Australian author Emma Mugglestone!

UPDATE:
I just listened to the audiobook version of this fabulous story, it is sooo good! I loved the dual narration by Tayla Thomas and Mat Dwyer. The accent and authentic narration really added to the characters. I am so thankful I got a chance to re-visit Wattle Junction, this time through the audiobook! I am really hoping that the other stories will also be released in audiobook format.

Thank you to NetGalley and Bolinda Audio for providing me with an ALC of this book in return for an honest and voluntary review!

In this book, we follow Alice Aspinall who is going through a MESSY public breakup after getting married to Phoenix on a reality TV show. She feels outcast and judged by the world and her one and only mission right now is to get a divorce.

In comes our MMC, Owen, who is a lawyer in the beginnings of opening his own lawfirm after he grew uncomfortable with the kind of cases he was carrying at his old one. He's looking to self-improve and take on cases that make him feel like he's doing better for the community, rather than covering some dodgy dealings. He takes on Alice's case to get the divorce and things move from there!

The narrator did an amazing job at expressing our FMCs desperation and emotions where necessary which I really appreciated! Also, both narrators were great at making verbal differences for different characters so it never meant that anything got confusing!
This is honestly just nit-picky but the spaces of silence between chapters felt INCREDIBLY long and I listen on 2.5x speed so i cant imagine how long theyd be for people listening at slower speeds.

Honestly, this book felt just okay to me, it was super easy to read and binge (i actually finished it all in one sitting) but for some reason it felt like this plot points that were meant to hit hard felt like a bit more of a tap... I wanted to see the outcome of everything but wasn't sat at the edge of my seat waiting to find out if that makes sense? And a lot of the time, it felt like we barely got to know the actual main characters as individuals, we just got to know them as they grew together.

This book really does show the importance of a community and the love that you can receive when being a part of one and I did truly love that! It felt super cosy and you can just tell you would feel safe if you were there yourself. I know there's a second book in this series and I do think I'll check that one out too just to feel this sense of love and community again!

Book 1 of the Wattle Junction series sees a failed reality star in the form of Alice who has just ran out on her reality rockstar messed up husband. She wants to start over and a broken car and nearest hotel later sees herself in Wattle Junction. Enter her Knight in shining armour as lawyer by day Owen who also happens to be super hot. Alice hires him as her divorce lawyer and she attempts to start a new life.

This book goes into good detail of Alice's backstory on her rise to fame. The highs and lows (mainly lows) of having your life played out in public. It paints a good picture of the community in Wattle Junction which it seems the author is building a series on. Owen and his brothers provide good comic relief and for once I have to be honest I did not see red flags with the main male lead!

The drama come mainly from the divorce and her insecurities which are all understandable and I applauded the good use of spice. There was just enough detail to make it tasty without overpowering the flavour.

My downside? For some reason I didn't fall in love with any of the characters and if I'm going to rate it higher than 3 stars I need to be emotionally invested which unfortunately I was not. Overall a good solid attempt. I would recommend readers who love romance to give this one a go it's sure to connect with others.

I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

4.5 stars ⭐️ Small town vibes in an Australian romance? Yes please! THE REALITY OF US’s Wattle Junction is Stars Hollow with Aussie charm & a cast of characters you’ll fall in love with.

Alice is a woman stepping out in her own & forging her own path and Owen is her grumpy divorce lawyer with a heart of gold. He’s your next book boyfriend!

Sweetness and spice ensue - the perfect mix!

THE REALITY OF US is all so readable. The pages just fly by and I’m certain that it takes a great deal of skill and work to make a story flow so easily.

I already have THE STORY OF US queued up on my Kindle for another trip to Wattle Junction and I’ll be pre-ordering Emma’s big upcoming release IN THE LONG RUN that’s out in August!

The small town setting and opposites attract premise immediately drew me in, and I was hopeful this might introduce me to a new author I’d love. Unfortunately, this one didn’t quite work for me.

I had a difficult time connecting with the characters, and because of that I never felt fully invested in Alice and Owen’s story. While the setup had potential, the plot didn’t intrigue me enough to keep me consistently engaged, and I found my attention drifting at times.

Even though this one fell short for me, I can see it appealing to readers who enjoy light, spicy small town romances with a bit of a reality TV twist.

Thank you to NetGalley and Bolinda Audio for the advance audiobook copy in return for my honest opinion.

Perfect and comforting read for this holiday season, which I read during a period of flu and it kept me so good company while I tried to heal! Alice is a fantastic protagonist, I found myself extremely in tune with her character: during the course of the novel we see her gain confidence in herself, in her abilities, we see her mature and improve. Owen, the MMC, I also liked him straight away, a green flag, always ready to support Alice in everything and without ever making her feel alone. However, the scenes that I appreciated the most were those between Owen and his family: the atmosphere is warm, very cozy and pleasant. The relationship between Alice and Owen develops in a delightful and endearing way; the reader finds himself falling in love with the protagonists as their story grows.

“The reality of us” is divinely written, you don't realize the passing of pages and time, a difficult book to put down that keeps you glued. In this novel I didn't just become fond of Owen and Alice but also of the little dog that steals a smile from us as the pages scroll by and of all the secondary characters, even becoming fond of the small town of Wattle Junction. A book that I recommend picking up as soon as possible!, I can't wait to read more by Emma Mugglestone.

🌶🌶

✨️He falls first
✨️Small town
✨️Forced proximity
✨️Great banter

I started reading and didn't even notice the time passing. I really enjoyed the characters, both the main and the secondary ones.

The tension between Owen and Alice is clear and was very well written. I couldn't wait for them to give in to each other, and when they finally got together, it was *chef kiss*. I loved every scene of them together, especially as they grew closer.

Besides the relationship between the main characters, it's great to see the family dynamics, especially the siblings that provided many hilarious moments.

This is a perfect book about new beginnings. I loved the growth the characters experienced throughout the story.

I had a lot of fun reading this book, and I highly recommend it.

Thank you so much, Emma Mugglestone, for sending me this ARC.

While this book has been in print for just over 2 years, the audiobook releases April 1, 2026.

Thank you NetGalley for the ARC and opportunity to listen before its audio release date.

I have to admit that it isn’t without its faults, of which I think are easily fixable. The narrators don’t do much for it, especially the male. There are so many odd pauses in the audio that must be breaks in the chapter, but the length of the pause in audio makes you check the player to see if there’s some sort of playback error. Spoiler alert: there wasn’t. I found myself giving the nod with eyes wide, as if to say “yes?” before the chapter randomly begins again. It didn’t feel natural, at all.

The story gets lost behind so much of the listening experience, unfortunately. I have a feeling it could’ve been more of a 4 star rating for me but I just can’t get over some of the audio flaws.

I was very kindly sent this book as an ARC by the lovely Emma Mugglestone and I just wanted to say thank you to her. This was such a good read I love a small town romance and it had the perfect amount of spice mixed with a great plot. I found that as soon as the romance started I was hooked I felt like I had been transported to Wattle Junction myself and was living the story. The relationships were very well written and honestly I loved both Owen and Alice in there own ways, they fit so well together. The relationships between everyone involved that were built throughout the book were amazing to read and experience as well as see how they worked and evolved. This was definitely one of my favourite small town romances to read. I can’t wait to read more work from Emma Mugglestone. This was a 4.5/5 star read for me and I loved every minute of it. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️.5/5

This was a cute story with endearing characters who bumble their way through an awkward situation (reality starlet escaping a sham of a marriage) and quaint setting (I mean what's not to love about a small town!) I like the way Alice's character develops over the course of the book as she finally finds her footing. The f it moment and forbidden nature of Alice and Owen's relationship was del cious and the side kick of the dog and old women's gossip brigade brought light heartedness!

I loved the dual narration approach with the 3rd POV and thought the narrators did a wonderful job!

I voluntarily listened to this ALC out 4/1/26.

This was so delightful! I absolutely loved the tension between Owen and Alice. Small town romance, he’s her divorce lawyer, she and her ex are reality tv stars, there’s a cute dog! It’s about fresh starts and healing from heartbreak and taking a chance on someone new. Other tropes you might enjoy:
♥️ Hilarious brothers
♥️ Creating genuine friendships
♥️ Open door spice
♥️ Only one tent
♥️ Forced proximity
♥️ Instant dislike to lovers

Loved it! Thanks to @emma.mugglestone for the ARC. Definitely add this one to your TBR and pre-order it!

Small town romance for the win!
Alice is running away from her failed marriage, among other things, when her car breaks down outside Wattle Junction. Cue sexy lawyer Owen turning up to help and we have a fabulous small town romance beginning.
Wattle junction had many colourful characters, I loved this community and how they all rallied together.
The romance aspect was messy and real, and had some great spicy scenes, but not too many that it hid the main story and messages.
I really enjoyed this one and I shall be on the lookout for any more books by this author.

This book was really cute! I loved the enemies to lovers, small town, opposites attract tropes that were used.

I found Alice a little annoying at the start and hard to connect with, but I did by the end and was rooting for her and Owen. She just wanted to be her own person and make her own decisions. Owen was so sweet. He was such a nice person, always trying to help other people, and putting himself last. He truly loved Alice and wanted the absolute best for her.

The smut in this book was really good. Whilst compared to other books, there wasn’t a whole lot of it, I really enjoyed what there was. This author knows how to write a good sex scene. I felt it wasn’t just sex either, it showed them truly connecting on a deeper level.

The setting of this small Aussie town really is beautiful. All the people were so caring and loving and welcomed Alice really nicely. The Old Girls Gossip Brigade was hilarious and they really did some behind the scenes work to bring Alice and Owen closer together.

Overall, this book was really enjoyable and such a nice, light romance read that I’m sure most people would enjoy.

The Reality of Us by Emma Mugglestone

Book one of the Wattle Junction series

Audiobook narrated by Mat Dwyer and Tayla Thomas
Despite being an Aussie, it is still an initial shock to hear the accent on the audiobook. Great narration by both

Alice - soon to be divorced influencer, new pup owner, finding her place in a small town

Owen - lawyer, returned home to his small town

Small town, forbidden relationship, she’s technically still married, troublesome ex, lots of running, small town gossip, secret dating, charity race, candles, HEA

Thanks to Netgalley for the audiobook

4.75 stars for Alice, a kick ass main character

The story of a damaged celebrity coming to a small town and finding herself and all the wonderful locals is my favourite type of story. I love that this book explores relationships, good and bad, it has heart and humour. You really fall in love with the town and its people and you want them to win.
Cannot recommend this enough.

Emma Mugglestone did a fabulous job writing a love story that revolved around a part of relationships we typically hide in the shadows.

Alice met Owen in the typical fashion of these types of book: big city girl’s life is ending so she runs to the middle of no where and falls in love with a small town hottie. Doesn’t hurt that the hottie has a really nice butt, good fashion sense and the skills to divorce her from her piece of shit husband. She comes with the baggage of a fake reality show marriage to a rockstar determined to drag her through the dirt if she leaves him. Throughout the book, Alice gains the confidence to stand up for herself like she’s never been able to do before and becomes the women she wants to be rather than the one she thinks she needs to be. With the help of her adoptive small town family, and her ridiculously attractive lawyer, she’s able to pick herself up from nothing and build a life for herself, using her ill gotten marriage fame to raise thousands for people in need.

Alice learns to take control of her life and Owen learns that sometimes, in order to help someone, he has to do nothing but let them figure it out themselves. Owen telling her family to let her figure it out herself is probably the greatest act of love he has in the entire book.

All in all it was an easy, feel good read that I had a hard time putting down. The topic of divorce, especially a messy media followed one, is one most authors don’t touch on so it was an interesting read. There are twists and turns and set backs for Alice that helped her become more confident in herself and her ability to make decisions. Owen stands behind her every second of it, even when she doesn’t want him there, like her personal big muscly cheerleader. I loved these two together and I’m glad they got a happy ending.

Thank you to Emma Mugglestone and BookSirens for the chance to enjoy this eARC for a honest review. I will definitely be recommending this one.

Alice is a character that drives me nuts and I almost did not want to finish this book because she has so many insecurities and she makes so many insane decisions.

Owen is also a character that bends over backwards for all the people in his life and some might call a bleeding heart.

While these two characters are interacting with the rest of the cast of this book…. they seem totally normal but when they were paired together they just made choices that seem so far fetched.

The ex character was down right despicable and I guess he's written this way so that we are not rooting for him and hate all that he does to Alice but it's so one dimensional.

This is an okay book… way too long in some scenes and there are some specific references to culture in Australia that goes over my head.

Over all it's a nice read but nothing that I'll remember tomorrow.

I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

Author: Emma Mugglestone
Narrators: Mat Dwyer & Tayla Thomas
Rating: 3.5 - 4⭐ | Audio Experience: 4.5⭐

I recently had the pleasure of listening to The Reality of Us as an ALC (huge thanks to NetGalley and Bolinda Audio!), and it was such an entertaining, binge-worthy experience. If you’re looking for a "rainy day" read that feels like a warm hug—with a side of unexpected heat—this is it.

The Story
While the book touches on some deeper themes, the heart of the story is the developing relationship between the two main characters. I loved the focus on community and the idea that the right people will always find a way to accept you.
• The FMC: Watching Alice’s character growth was a highlight for me.
• The MMC: My heart went out to him! He was incredibly sweet, supportive, and genuinely wanted the best for Alice.
• The Spice: I have to admit, I was surprised! Given the cosy tone of the start, the first spicy scene was much more descriptive than I anticipated—but definitely appreciated. 😉

The Vibes & Side Characters
The supporting cast really made this book for me. The brothers and the "Old Girls Gossip Brigade" provided some hilarious moments. As the first in a series, it did a fantastic job of making me invested in the rest of the crew—I’m already curious to see who gets the next book!
Note: A few plot points felt a little unresolved for me (specifically the drama involving the MMC’s ex and his brother’s family situation), but the messy drama with the FMC’s ex certainly kept things interesting.

The Audio Experience
Being an Australian, I cannot tell you how much I appreciated an Australian book narrated by Australian voices. Mat Dwyer and Tayla Thomas did an incredible job bringing the emotional depth of the characters to life.
• Dual Narration: Both narrators used distinct voices and cadences for the side characters within their chapters, which made the world feel full and lived-in.
• Listener Tip:I found the pacing a little slow with some long gaps, so I bumped the speed up to 1.5x – 2x, which made for a perfect listening flow.

Final Verdict:
A solid, safe, and heart warming romance with great character growth and a top-tier narration.

3.25 stars.

"The Reality of Us" by Emma Mugglestone has its moments, but I never really got fully invested in the characters or their relationship despite their well-written arcs and backstories. What I liked: I love a good small-town romance, and I thoroughly enjoyed watching the FMC, Alice, be accepted in the quaint Wattle Junction fold. I love that this story takes place in Australia... It doesn't seem like there are many contemporary Australian romances, so it that was fun. I enjoyed both Alice and Owen as individuals. Owen is such a nice, cinnamon roll-y MMC! He is always trying to help those around him, often to his detriment. As a lawyer, he is a bleeding heart who is always trying to do the right thing. He definitely falls first for Alice, which I appreciated. He is soooo smitten with her! I liked Alice's attempts at reinvention post-split-up with the horrible, no-good Phoenix. I liked watching her confidence in herself grow in tandem with Owen telling her that she needs to believe in herself more. As she begins to believe what he is saying, she gains confidence in herself, her ideals, and realizes what she is worth. I also loved watching her candle business take off, but that's because I am obsessed with candles and wax melts, hahaha. I also did enjoy the spicy scenes and thought they were well-written. I also liked the dual audiobook narration by Mat Dwyer & Tayla Thomas. They did good voiceover work to distinguish the characters from one another. What I didn't like: the main characters lacked the yearning and spark I crave from a romance novel. I felt like the pacing was off and that the book was too slow-moving. While the book has a lot of drama and intrigue, I didn't feel a huge spark between Owen and Alice. Because there is so much other stuff going on with Alice, her ex, her divorce, reinventing herself post-divorce, Phoenix's drug issues, etc, it feels like the romance takes a backseat to the drama. All in all, this was a mixed bag for me, but I will still read the rest of the series!

Thank you to NetGalley, Emma Mugglestone, and Bolinda Audio for the complimentary ALC of this book. All opinions are my own. I was not compensated for this review.

🕯️ The Reality of Us by Emma Mugglestone 🕯️

Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️.5
Spice: 🌶️🌶️.5

Characterization: 5/5
Plot/Storyline: 4/5
Writing Style: 4/5

🕯️ - In a search for a new start after a media fallout courtesy of her bumbling husband, Alice ends up discovering the safe haven that is Wattle Junction. However, upon her arrival, she finds herself needing assistance from the locally returned lawyer, Owen, in more ways than one. In what starts out as enemies to client/lawyer to then lovers, we see the journey of Owen and Alice to find their individual worths and selves post heartbreak and slander.

🕯️ - Alice has such a redemptive, dynamic characterization on the storyline. Her arc is what really helps make the entire storyline come to life, and the idea that you as the reader think you know what’s happening without actually knowing is wonderfully captured with her as well. We are introduced to Owen in Wattle It Be? but the actual Owen we come to know and love is quite different - we see the grump be less grumpy but there’s so much more to him than that. Lulu is the unsung hero of the book, and I’ll argue with anyone who suggests otherwise.

🕯️ - Reading Australian English was a genuine kick. There were many things I had to contextually figure out or google to make sure I understood fully what was happening, and I love that. I learned so much more than just a great story. The alternating perspectives in this text were more distinct than in the introductory novella, and the only real qualm I have with the entire book overall is the time jumps. Fast forwards are necessary in storytelling and they make sense, but it felt rushed at times to me, but in all earnestness, this was a text that compelled me to keep reading - it was and wasn’t predictable, if that makes sense. Classic tropics with alternative twists.

Final Recommendation: Absolute must read! Faith, love, trust, and time for processing are all explored in great ways. It’s cute, it’s spicy, and it’s a solidly good read. Now I need the other James brothers’ love stories!!

💕 Special thank you to Emma for including me an ARC reviewer for this novel - it was an honor to read and review! 💕

Australian small-town romcom dramedy – The Reality of Us is delightful!

Alice Aspinall is a social media starlet. Her marriage has spectacularly and publicly imploded so Alice legs it to Wattle Junction. She’s got her nail polish, and a car full of clothes, but not much in the way or money or (seemingly) common sense. She meets Owen James, the town lawyer, who is both anxious and uptight and he agrees to act for her in her divorce. They antagonise each other initially, but an attraction is bubbling. Once they hit it off, they have lots of fun creeping around. Their 'situationship' is not public though, because it feels unprofessional for Owen when Alice is a client. Also the town is full of meddlers and busy bodies, as well as Owen’s Mafia-adjacent ex-girlfriend, Alice’s soon-to-be ex-husband, and Alice’s fledgling candle business. I love how all the drama swirls around as Alice and Owen talk to each other, and get it on so nicely.

My main quibble is that there are so many different settings. The characters all move around - from homes, to businesses, pubs to bars, inside to outside, Wattle Junction to the city, and back. It feels exhausting at times and I wished they would just stand still for a minute.

I listened to an ARC and I really liked narrator Tayla Thomas' style. She has the Aussie twang down pat, while speaking clearly and giving all the expression and intonation I wanted. She’s particularly adept with distinguishing the female voices and her cadence matched the drama. Mat Dwyer voiced the chapters in Owen’s point of view and his expression wasn't as accomplished. Chapters ended abruptly and some language is indistinct. Overall though they created a lively romance in Wattle Junction.

Thank you Emma Mugglestone and Bolinda Audio for the ALC. Opinions are my own.
