A young man yearning for adventure must confront the harsh reality of a world that might not be the real one to begin with in this LitRPG fantasy adventure.

For Prince Hail Teoran, there’s never been a greater hero than his own father, a true living legend who came through the gates with his fellow Travelers years ago to rescue the continent of Lagrea from the forces of darkness. Unfortunately, when the young prince actually meets his dad for the first time, he turns out to be, well, a total jerkweed.

Naturally, Hail is crushed. That is, until he’s visited by a seemingly all-powerful administrator who explains that Hail, his mother, and everyone in their world are part of a game the Travelers are constantly playing. But that doesn’t mean Hail isn’t special. In fact, as a product of the union between his Traveler father and NPC mother, he’s an ever-evolving AI—or native player character—which means he has the ability make his own way, seeking adventure, facing danger, and occasionally screwing up in truly epic fashion.

And the more Hail learns, the stronger he grows in levels, stats, and experience, all of which he’ll sorely need when his game world faces a peril that did not come to play . . .

I listened to both books 1 and 2 and am giving both books 5 stars because they kept me entertained. There are enough Scifi, Fantasy, LitRPG, Paranormal and whatever other tag is hot that people are writing to try and make money and I can't even finish those books. These probably don't deserve a 5 star because a few times I drifted off while listening and usually I will rewind until I find something that I remember. These books I'm sorry but they were filler and although entertaining I didn't care that much about them and was really looking forward to the next book in my audio queue. I've listened to YA books so that wasn't the problem I just didn't care that much about the virtual reality kid and what he was doing. I hope this author keeps writing because they are good at it but work on something new and don't have the MC be a kid unless you get them to grow up quickly. There are some very good reincarnated series that do a good job at it and some cultivation series were they enter into a dead kid. Find some of those and figure out why people had problems with this is my only suggestion if you want to write about a kid MC. Good luck on your future work.

Omg 😲 what a pack of assh**es the MC'S dad and his party are terrible they were in the world playing a game and trampled on anyone and everything cared about only leveling up and using whoever or whatever is in the way his dad randomly bangs the princess married her has a kid and doesn't care about either one of them. It's sick and really sad 😔. His dad showed up with a parade to divorce his mother and disowned them both. The mc because he was born from a npc and a traveler he was different the administrator showed up and had to repeatedly had to explain what was happening it was annoying 😑 but he was only 8. His dad disowned him so now he is a bastard and everything changes poor kid. Get past this and it gets good OMG the travelers are terrible they treat all npc like possible XP the mc is ignorant and keeps thinking the travelers are his friends they are not hope he wises up qick

While the main character is way younger than I'd normally enjoy this book sets an amazing baseline for what I hope with be a great series regarding the moral and ethical dilemmas of dealing with sentient AIs with a LITRPG flair. Especially as the characters age up and develope.

I read this on Royal Road before it was officially published, so there may have been changes to the final version.

If I was rating this on royal road, I'd give it 3 & 1/2 since when reading on that platform there is an understanding that it is usually an early draft- plus the books there are free so its hard to be overly critical.
When I read it there were some issues with pacing, character depth, and story stakes (nothing felt like it really mattered). That being said, I did think it was a fun romp- just not something I'd pay for and I did not choose to continue reading for the 2nd book.
