What if a dragon and a cat bonded?

I stumbled across this book while looking for ones with interesting non-human leads, preferably dragons, so a protagonist pair of dragon and cat easily drew my interest.

After rescuing a kitten she later names Tidbit, Anathema the dragon finds a surprisingly eloquent and clever companion in him, even going as far as magically bonding with him to extend his lifespan and grant him unique abilities. Through saving an animal familiar, the dragon and cat duo eventually learn of an empire's efforts to purge the continent of witchcraft and wizardry, of all magic and magical creatures. Anathema is reluctant to involve herself at first, but the persuasive Tidbit is able to convince her to aid the magic users' cause, thus beginning several trips to foreign lands where not only the duo's tactics and skills are tested, but also their relationship.

Anathema and Tidbit's relationship has been the highlight of the book for me. Both have been rejected by family or otherwise chased out of their home, so, naturally, they are quickly attached to each other. However, due to obvious differences between a dragon and a cat, one also becomes rather overprotective of the other. Tidbit hates it and would often go out of his way and against Anathema's wishes in order to protect her, leading to the occasional falling out and sulking from both sides. Such drama and the generally sweet relationship between the two of them had made the book an enjoyable read for me.

While dialogues are likewise enjoyable, they sometimes border on long-winded to me. Now and again, the leads would convene to discuss a solution to some problem or a strategy to some fight. However, the dialogues would almost always boil down to a one-liner question for a one-paragraph answer, exploring too many possibilities and what-ifs. I think I'd have enjoyed the narrative better if the characters would encounter and respond to events as they unfold rather than talk through everything for half a chapter before the action.

Still, following along Anathema and Tidbit's adventure, quarrels, and reconciliation has been a fun experience. The way the book ended, it seems a continuation is a distinct possibility, and I would very much look forward to reading it.

Lovely tale

This was a lovely tale about Tidbit the cat and Anathema the dragon. I particularly enjoyed the fact that Tidbit developed dragon powers and still retained his catlike demeanor and personality.
